Experience Rome's splendid historic beauty and architecture during this orientation tour of Rome that has been specially-designed for guests with walking difficulties.
Depart the pier for the drive into Rome. Upon arrival, you will pass by the Vatican walls that delineate the area of Vatican City, Lungotevere and the Ara Pacis. You will then pass by the Roman Walls, or Muro Torto, and the Villa Borghese before entering the Old Town near Porta Pinciana.
Next, you will see many beautiful and historic sites that include Via Vittorio Veneto, the symbol of the Italian dolce vita, the white marble Victor Emmanuel II Monument, the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine, Circus Maximus and finally, St. Peter's Basilica. Some time will then be made available in People’s Square (Viale Washington) very close to many of Rome’s important landmarks: the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps and to the Italy’s finest shopping streets: Via del Corso, Via Frattina and Via del Tritone.
Please note: This tour is panoramic in nature with limited optional walking at any stops made. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Some free time at your leisure will be provided. During this time, you will not have the services of a guide, and the amount of walking you do will be at your discretion. Please be advised that the Basilica might be closed at times for security reasons. Guests will be required to wear conservative attire covering the knees and shoulders for the visit inside the Basilica. Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes.
This tour is designed for guests who would like a limited guided tour with free time to explore Rome at their leisure. Once in Rome, you will be dropped off at 3D Rewind, where you will watch a 3D special effects journey that seems to transport you through ancient Rome. After this amazing virtual adventure, you'll walk to the iconic Roman Colosseum. A masterpiece of classical architecture, the Colosseum is an enormous amphitheater where gladiators, Christians and wild beasts once battled to the death in front of as many as 50,000 spectators.
Following your exterior visit of the Colosseum, you'll see the imposing triumphal Arch of Titus, erected in 81 AD by the Emperor Domitian in honor of the victories in battle of his brother and father in Judea. You will also admire the Via Sacra, the sacred route followed by religious and triumphal processions. Continue on by walking to the exterior of the Roman Forum, through lovely Venice Square and into Piazza Navona. This charming square exudes a relaxed atmosphere and features beautiful architecture within its church and fountain. Then, enjoy free time for lunch on your own, shopping and further exploration of the treasures of Rome. Afterwards, you'll drive back to the ship.
Please note: Guests must be able to walk approximately 2 miles over even and cobblestone surfaces with some steps. An escort will be on the coach during the trip to/from Rome and a local guide will be met once in Rome for the half-day guided portion of the tour. Tour includes approximately 2.5 hours of independent exploration. The order of the tour may be reversed or altered depending on traffic or local conditions. On Sundays and public holidays, the majority of shops, boutiques and small stores will be closed. Only souvenir shops will be open.
