After more than 700 years of German, Swedish, Russian rule, Latvia, with Riga as its capital city, thus declared its independence on November 18, 1918. Soviet occupation and annexation occurred in 1940, but then Latvia declared its full de facto independence in 1991. The Historic Centre of Riga has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city is particularly notable for its extensive Art Nouveau architecture

    The bus will take you from the Riga harbor to the picturesque town of Sigulda, located about 30 miles from Riga. During the bus ride you will enjoy the beautiful forest scenery and magnificent views of the River Gauja valley. Sigulda is often called the "Latvian Switzerland" and is well known as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Latvia.

    On the tour you will visit the 13th century Turaida Castle and the fortification tower, where you can enjoy the picturesque landscape from a bird's-eye view. By the Turaida church under an old linden tree you will find the grave of a young girl - the Rose of Turaida - the heroine of a true love story from the 17th century. The visit to Turaida will end with a walk in a sculpture park dedicated to Latvian folklore.

    During the tour you will also see the ruins of the 13th century Sigulda Castle and the 19th century Kropotkin's Manor House. On the way you will also visit the popular sandstone caves (Gutmanis cave) on the ancient riverbank.

    Please note: This tour involves approximately 2.5 hours of moderate walking and several steps. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. This tour is not recommended for guests who utilize a wheelchair and those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina.

In many cases, it is not possible to participate in more than one tour per day in a given port. Minor children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a an adult parent or guardian on all shore excursions. Tours require minimum participation levels to operate so please sign up as early as possible. Tours may be cancelled if minimum participation levels are not met.
