Walking Tour of Helsingborg
Duration: 1 1/2 hours
Tour Code: hlb-001
Experience Helsingborg by walking through its vibrant downtown, a wonderful mixture of contemporary buildings and historical landmarks dating back to medieval times.
Walk directly from the pier and stroll along the beautiful Norra Hamnen, a former industrial dock that has been redeveloped to include an esplanade full of excellent restaurants and shops. Before long, you will pass the Henry Dunker Culture Centre, a contemporary building designed with two curved roofs that are evocative of ocean waves. Inside, it houses an art museum, town museum, concert hall and “black box” theater, making it one of the largest culture centers in Scandinavia. After your guided walking tour, you may wish to return for an independent interior visit.
Upon reaching the main square of Stortorget, you will have a fine view of another landmark: Helsingborg’s neo-Gothic Town Hall, which was built in 1870 with a soaring 230-foot tower and stained-glass windows depicting key events in the town’s history. Stained-glass windows are also one of the highlights at the 13th-century Church of St. Mary where you will have an interior visit. If the sun is shining through them during your time here, the interior will look even more glorious.
Further along you will pass the terraced steps that lead up to the old “keep”. No building is more emblematic of Helsingborg than this medieval keep - or Kärnan, that sits atop a rocky ridge in the city center. The keep is all that remains of the once-impenetrable, 14th-century Helsingborg Castle, which was constantly under siege during conflicts between Sweden and Denmark.
Finally, you will stroll past the half-timbered houses on Helsingborg’s oldest pedestrian-only street. Your guided tour ends here and you are free to remain in town to shop on your own or walk back to the ship.
Please note: This tour includes 90-minutes of easy to moderate walking. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns.
