Barcelona to Barcelona SANDS OF SARDINIA 10 Nights Departs Jul 13, 2018 Seven Seas Voyager

  • Valencia was established by the Greeks and later occupied by the Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths and Arabs. A 15th century artistic movement here gave the world spectacular paintings, sculptures, and jewels. Today a “City of Arts and Sciences,” Valencia offers visitors remarkable samples of modern architecture, alongside such notable classics as the 13th century Cathedral and Chapel of the Holy Chalice. Built on the site of a mosque which was originally a Roman temple the Chapel contains the chalice which legend says was used by Christ at the Last Supper. For a more historic view, take in the Quart Towers, a former gate of the medieval wall, built in 1444; and Serranos Towers, a former prison surrounded by a moat and built around 1391.

The following Shore Excursions are available for this port on this cruise, and may be reserved beginning 240 days before the cruise begins for guests receiving Concierge amenities, and 180 days before the cruise begins for all other guests. From the comfort of your coach, you will see the most important monuments of beautiful Valencia on this panoramic driving tour.

Third in importance after Madrid and Barcelona, Valencia was founded by the Romans in 138 BC, but it was the Muslims who had a more detectable influence upon modern Valencia. Leaving the pier, you will enjoy views of the most modern buildings in town, all belonging to this City of Arts and Sciences.

Upon arrival in the city center, the walking tour start with the city hall. Next is La Lonja, the city's Commodity Exchange and Maritime Consulate, built in the 15th century. Typical of the modernist era is the Central Market; planned and built in the first years of the 19th century.

Other notable sights include the Cathedral and Chapel of the Holy Chalice, dating back to the 13th century and built on the site of a mosque which had, itself, replaced a Roman temple. Inside, the Chapel of the Holy Chalice contains the chalice which legend says was used by Jesus Christ at the Last Supper.

The tour concludes with views of the Basilica de la Virgen de los Desamparados, built between 1652 and 1667 and dedicated to Our Lady of the Abandoned, the patron virgin of Valencia; and Serranos Towers, a former prison surrounded by a moat and built around 1391.

Please note: This tour involves some walking during the free time scheduled to allow guests time to browse the area and shops at the town center, before returning to the pier. There is also a brief walk between the drop-off/pickup-point and the city center. On Sundays the Cathedral is closed to group visits. Therefore the guide will provide outside explanations and participants may choose to visit the cathedral individually. The Central Market is closed on Sundays.

  • Valencia At a Glance & Wine Tasting

Explore the architectural diversity of Valencia through historic landmarks that include its medieval Cathedral and Central Market. Then sample several distinctive regional wines.

Depart from the pier and drive directly to the modern City of Art and Sciences for a photo stop. Valencia's cultural hub, the "city" includes a planetarium, science museum, open-air oceanographic park and stunning performing arts center. Designed by Valencia architect Santiago Calatrava, the landmark building is absolutely spectacular in size and silhouette, as it contains four different concert halls devoted to opera, ballet, music recitals and cinema.

Continuing on, you'll pass the city's bullring and lovely North Railway Station before stopping at the twin Quart Towers, which were built in the 15th century as part of Valencia's defensive walls. The remainder of the tour is mostly walking, initially over to D.O. Valencia for a wine tasting of as many as five different vintages.

The D.O. refers to the Denomination of Origin, meaning the wines were produced in the Valencia region, which consists of more than 80 wineries or "bodegas." Wine has been produced here since Neolithic times, and Valencia has become Spain's largest wine export center. Valencia's best-known wine is a traditional dessert wine made from moscatel grapes.

Following the tasting, you'll walk to the city's medieval Cathedral, built on a site El Cid dedicated to the blessed Virgin, and then over to the Central Market for an exterior visit. Incredibly, the market has occupied the same location since the 13th century. Later, you'll drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2-hours of walking, that includes negotiating some cobblestone surfaces and there will be some steps to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; sunscreen; a bottle of water from the ship; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The order of the sites seen or visited may vary.

  • Panoramic Drive, Albufera Park & Boat Ride

Experience the diversity of the Valencian region during this tour that showcases two wonderful, yet completely different worlds: an ultra-modern cultural complex in the heart of the city, and a vast, pristine wetlands south of town.

Starting off from the pier, you'll first enjoy a panoramic drive through downtown Valencia that highlights its most iconic attractions. Founded by the Romans in 137 B.C., Valencia has transitioned into one of Europe's most sophisticated modern cities. There's no better place to behold that side of Valencia than at the City of Arts and Sciences, a cluster of futuristic-looking buildings devoted to art and culture. After a stop there for photos, you'll continue your driving tour of Valencia, before finally leaving the city behind and heading south to nearby Albufera Natural Park.

In complete contrast to urbane Valencia, Albufera is one of the most important wetland areas on the Iberian Peninsula. A slim strip of coastline protects it from the sea, and you'll find sand dunes which have formed, along with a curious Mediterranean pine forest and rich shrubbery growing in the sandy soil. Three canals (two natural and a third man-made) connect a lagoon and surrounding wetlands with the sea, and each has its own characteristic flora and fauna. In addition to the diversity of trees and plants found here, Albufera is also home to an especially large variety of birds. While there's no telling what species you'll see, you might possibly catch sight of black-winged stilts, crested coots, little-ringed plovers and countless migratory birds such as bee-eaters.

During your time here, you'll also have an exterior visit at a traditional "barraca" house within the park. The home offers a candid look at how the local residents live in harmony with nature while supporting themselves through fishing and agriculture. Afterwards, you'll gain yet another perspective of the park, by boarding a small boat and cruising the lake which is at the heart of Albufera. The largest lake in Spain, it provides an excellent habitat for both the permanent bird population and those that migrate here during the year. Following your leisurely lake cruise, you'll rejoin your coach and transfer directly back to the pier in Valencia.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 90-minutes of moderate walking that includes some natural and uneven surfaces. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not recommended for those with mobility issues. Guests must be able to enter and exit the tour boat with limited assistance. Weather appropriate, casual clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

  • Explore Sagunto & Valencia

Retrace the region's turbulent and fascinating history in the frequently conquered village of Sagunto and then in bustling Valencia, which was founded as a Roman colony in 138 B.C.

Depart from the pier and enjoy a scenic drive northeast to Sagunto, an ancient village founded by the Greeks and captured by both the Carthaginians under Hannibal and the Romans, who battled over it during the Second Punic War. Evidence of Sagunto's many conquerors still remains and history abounds wherever you look.

On your walking tour of the village, you'll wander through the narrow alleyways of the well-preserved Jewish Quarter, passing its whitewashed houses and through several stone lancet arches. You'll also visit a National Monument: a 6,000-seat Roman forum overlooking the sea. Further up on an adjoining hill lies a second National Monument, a castle complex whose buildings reflect numerous architectural styles. Divided into seven squares, the castle perches on a natural lookout point and contains an ancient cistern with nine pillars built during an Arab occupation. Feel free to explore the castle complex on your own during some free time.

Then, returning to Valencia, you'll stop briefly for photos at the City of Arts and Sciences, a wonderful cultural hub that includes a planetarium, science museum, open-air oceanographic park and stunning performing arts center.
