  • Palma Scenic Drive & Local Pearl Factory

Take in the architectural highlights of Palma and visit a pearl factory to watch artisans create lustrous, perfectly formed Majorca pearls using a time-honored technique.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at Bellver Castle, a spectacular Gothic landmark from the 14th century. Its round design is unusual among Spanish castles, and although seemingly impenetrable, the fortress never served a defensive purpose. It was used mainly as a prison. As you ramble about the hilltop castle taking photos, you will appreciate the origin of its name, which means “lovely view” in Catalan.

An introductory driving tour of Palma follows, during which you may spot the lovely Gran Hotel and the historical Theatre Principal, which was inaugurated in 1667 as the House of Comedies. In time, you will reach the village of Montuiri for a pearl factory tour.

Majorca pearls have been manufactured on the island since the 19th century and they are extraordinarily lustrous. The pearls are hand-made using a closely guarded technique developed more than a century ago. The pearls aren’t natural, so they tend to be perfectly uniform, a feature that’s especially noticeable in a long strand of pearls.

You will have time to shop for pearl jewelry before returning to Palma for more shopping or to explore gems such La Seu, the city’s Gothic cathedral. Its golden sandstone exterior with its flying buttresses is particularly fabulous as it was meant to demonstrate the might of Mallorca’s Christian conquerors, who built the cathedral.

Please note: There will be cobblestone surfaces and a few steps to negotiate during the photo stop and at the shop. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Timing may vary but, always visiting the same sites. On Sundays and during local Festivities shops in the city center may be closed.

  • Palma City Highlights

Although Mallorca's capital of Palma has been a popular, modern resort city since the 1960s, it still retains a certain historic charm. You will begin with an exterior visit at its landmark Gothic cathedral, known as 'La Seu," which contains four naves and an enormous rose window, which casts a beautiful light into the church. Another highlight is the wrought-iron canopy over the main altar, which was designed by famed Spanish architect Antonio Gaudì.

Next, it's a short walking tour to the city center where you will have the chance to visit a typical pearl shop and learn how they are uniquely created. Afterwards, have some free time for shopping or browsing about. Then, rejoining your coach, you'll drive to Bellver Castle, which was constructed in the early 1300s, during the reign of Jaime I of Mallorca. It is the only circular Gothic castle in Europe with a double gallery of arches inside the central patio. You will also see the lovely San Marcos Chapel and the five halls that comprise the Palma History Museum before returning to the pier.

Please note: This tour inlcudes approximate 2 1/2 hours of easy to moderate walking, plus any addtional walking at the guests' discretion during free time. The walking does include cobblestone surfaces and there are approximately 40 steps in the walls, to reach the Cathedral from the bus drop off. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Shoulders must be covered when entering the cathedral. Only exterior visits of the cathedral are possible on Sunday calls.

  • Taste of the Past

This tour delves into Mallorca's intriguing history, beginning at the Bellver Castle, which was constructed in the early 1300s, during the reign of Jaime I of Mallorca. It is the only circular Gothic castle in Europe with a double gallery of arches inside the central patio. The castle also affords some marvelous views of Palma.

From here, you will drive to Montuiri Village and have the chance to visit a typical pearl factory where you will see how the Majorca pearls are uniquely created. From here it's on to an area of the island called Pla de Sant Jordi, or Saint Jordi's Plain, where windmills still dot the landscape. It is in this region that Mallorca's rich agricultural customs live on at Els Calderers, an 18th century manor house, which the owners have graciously opened to the public in an effort to share the traditions of Mallorca.

Stroll at your leisure through the impressive Great Hall, Hunting Room, kitchen, and into the wine cellar, where you may sample some locally produced vintages. "Mi casa es su casa" has never rung so true.

After your visit, you'll rejoin your coach and travel back to the pier.

  • The Caves of Drach, An Underground World

A leisurely drive through the countryside, dotted with windmills and farms, brings you to the Caves of Drach, a spectacular underground attraction.

The caves contain countless strangely shaped stalactites and stalagmites, reflecting in the clear pools. It's a beautifully eerie sight, as is Martell Lake, one of the world's largest subterranean lakes, which shimmers provocatively in the manmade lights from above.

After emerging from the caves, you will witness another phenomenon: highly prized Mallorca pearls being made in a factory. These faux pearls, made from natural marine products, are nearly indistinguishable from the real thing. Afterwards, you'll travel back to the pier where your tour concludes.

Please note: This tour inlcudes approximate 2 hours of moderate walking and you may encounter some slippery surfaces. There will be a few steps to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, non-slip, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The caves can be humid and cold so it is suggested that you also bring a jacket with you. Caves will be explored independently without a guide. The caves are not exclusive to Oceania guests.

  • Panoramic Valldemosa

A splendid landscape of mountains and plains filled with almond and olive trees greets you, en route to Valldemossa, a peaceful town which has served to inspire musicians, and painters. One of the first visitors to this area was the Archduke Luis Salvador of Austria. Apart from his visits to the region, he bought many acres of land along with their respective ranches. Some of these ranches are still preserved, as is the case with "S Estaca" ranch, which currently belongs to Michael Douglas, the famous American actor.

Your coach will leave you at the foot of the "Cartuja", a former Carthusian monastery perched 1,200 feet above the Musa Valley where you will have a visit of approximately one hour. Its construction has been dated to 1309 and was occupied by Cartujanos Priests. The church was later added during the 15th century. Two centuries later, during the winter of 1838-39, Aurora Dupin, who went by the renowned literary name of George Sand, and her lover, Frédéric Chopin, spent three months, hoping to conquer the composer's tuberculosis. Before leaving Valldemosa, you'll enjoy some free time and have the opportunity to visit a typical pearl shop where you will be able also to learn how the Majorca pearls are uniquely created.

En route back to Palma, you will make a photo stop at "Sa Foradada". The name is in reference to the rock wall along the coast with a large hole at the point, (Foradada meaning, "with a hole"). With its contrast between the mountains and the sea it's no wonder why it is named one of the most beautiful landscapes in Mallorca.

Please note: This tour inlcudes approximate 90-minutes of easy to moderate walking which includes cobblestone surfaces. There will be a few steps to negotiate. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach, and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned only to participate to the extent of their personal stamina and ability and may make arrangements with the guide to not participate in some of the walking portions of the tour. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The order of the sites viewed or visited may vary.
