  • Highlights of Cagliari

For an all-encompassing overview of Cagliari, this tour serves perfectly as it stops at all the landmarks, from the surrounding beach to the medieval district downtown.

Commencing from the pier, it's a short drive to Poetto, the city's primary beach. The name Poetto is thought to derive from the Catalan word for "source," a reference to the area's many sources or reservoirs of water. One of those sources, a salt marsh nearby, attracts thousands of pink flamingoes, which you can observe in their natural habitat, along with purple gallinules, herons, snipes, coots and more than 175 other bird species. Continuing on, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the beach and surrounding area from atop Monte Urpinu, one of the more scenic lookout points on the way to the Sanctuary of Bonaria.

While the origins of the sanctuary date to 1324, there have been numerous reconstructions and additions, including an adjacent basilica built in the 18th century. Inside, there's a statue of the Virgin Mary that was found in a nearby pond in the 1300s. More Sardinian history awaits you in the ancient hilltop citadel known as the Castello, where you will begin the walking portion of your tour, as motor vehicles are prohibited. Entering the district near the white limestone, 13th century Tower of St. Pancras, you will spend more than an hour exploring the citadel's narrow streets and alleyways with your guide. Some of the sights you'll see are a Cathedral that the Pisans built in the 13th century, the Archbishop's Palace, and the Governor's Palace, which was once the seat of government.

At the conclusion of your walking tour, you'll meet your coach for the drive back to the pier.

Please note: While largely panoramic, this tour does include approximately 75-minutes of moderate walking and standing. There are some uneven surfaces and steps to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned only to participate to the extent of their personal stamina and ability and may make arrangements with the guide to not participate in some or all of the walking portion of the tour. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The order of the sites viewed or visited may vary.

  • Epic Sardinia

Sardinia's compelling past comes alive on this tour of the island's most significant archaeological site, complemented by a look at some of Cagliari's historic landmarks.

Departing from the pier by coach, it's a picturesque drive of just over one-hour that takes you through the lovely countryside and across the fertile Campidano plain. As you pass through the village of Villamar, be sure to look for the colorful murals painted on many of the walls, an artistic tradition prevalent throughout Sardinia's rugged interior. Your destination is Barumini, a village that has gained fame for its nuraghic complex of Su Nuraxi, the most important archaeological site on the island. Nuraghes are tower-shaped, prehistoric stone structures dating back to 15th century B.C.

The complex, which is dominated by a central tower, is surrounded by defensive walls that enclose an extensive settlement. There are dwellings, places of worship and meeting places, where the Bronze Age inhabitants gathered 3,500 years ago. First excavated in 1950, Su Nuraxi has become a World Heritage Site for its imaginative use of materials and building techniques. Single families or clans are thought to have built the defensive structures, which were reinforced about 500 years later, when the Carthaginians began to invade Sardinia.

After exploring this revealing ancient site, you will drive back to Cagliari and tour its city center, which also features defensive walls around the Castello district. Before returning to the pier, a photo stop will be made at the Monte Urpinu where you will be treated to some magnificent views of the town and bay below.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 90-minutes of moderate to strenuous walking and standing. There are some uneven surfaces, steps and inclines to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not considered suitable for those with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The order of the sites viewed or visited may vary.

  • Historical Cagliari

This outstanding walking and driving tour presents a historical insight into Cagliari and a look at its considerable natural beauty from several vantage points.

Your tour begins at the pier with a panoramic driving tour through Sardinia's historic capital of Cagliari. Although founded in the 7th century B.C. by the Phoenicians, Cagliari has been dominated by many cultures over the millennia and boasts well-preserved ruins attesting to the influence of the Romans, Pisans, Spanish and others. Upon arriving at the ancient hilltop citadel, known as the Castello, you will disembark your coach and begin the guided walking portion of this tour, as motor vehicles are prohibited in this historic district.

Entering near the white limestone, 13th century Tower of St. Pancras, you will walk to the National Archaeological Museum, which houses a vast collection of valuable artifacts. You may see Phoenician tombs, Punic jewelry, Nuragic bronzes and Roman statues, all of which provide an excellent insight into the history and development of Sardinia. Later, you will continue your walking tour through the citadel's narrow streets and alleyways, which are lined with historically significant buildings. You'll see a Cathedral that the Pisans built in the 13th century, the Archbishop's Palace, and the Governor's Palace, which was once the seat of government.

Rejoining your coach, you will drive to Monte Urpinu on the outskirts of Cagliari and enjoy sweeping views of the city and Poetto Beach before returning to the pier where your tour concludes.

Please note: This tour includes over 2-hours of moderate to strenuous walking and standing. There are some uneven surfaces and steps to negotiate. • Sant' Antioco

Explore remote Sant' Antioco, an island renowned for its archaeological sites and museums detailing early life in southern Sardinia on this memorable tour.

Your day begins with a scenic 90-minute drive through southwestern Sardinia. Along the way, you will pass through several lovely villages, and you'll notice that the landscape starts becoming wilder and less developed as you approach Sant' Antioco. The island is named for St. Antiochus, a Christian martyr who was executed in the 2nd century after spending much of his life working in the local lead mines.

Upon arrival in Sant' Antioco, which is connected to the mainland by an artificial isthmus, you will tour the Archaeological Museum. The Museum's vast collections include pottery, jewelry and inscribed steles from nearby excavations, as the area has been continuously occupied since prehistoric times and eventually dominated by the Phoenicians, Romans, French and several other nationalities. Continuing on foot, you will make your way to the sobering Carthaginian Tophet, an infant burial site surrounded by funerary urns containing the remains of cremated children.

Walking a bit further, you'll stop at the hilltop Ethnographical Museum, which contains a fascinating collection of antique tools and traditional objects used in agriculture. Finally, you will explore the subterranean area where the Carthaginians created more than 1,500 tombs for their dead. The excavations are plentiful throughout Sant' Antioco and offer great insight into ancient Sardinia.

Before re-boarding your coach and traveling back to the pier, you'll have some free time in the town to do a bit of exploring on your own.

  • Ancient Nora

Visit Nora, the first town ever founded on Sardinia, and tour its beautifully preserved ruins, which showcase the remains of at least three different cultures.

It's an hour's drive southwest from the pier to the seaside village of Nora, which is thought to have been the first Nuraghic village founded in Sardinia. By the 8th century B.C., Nora had become a Phoenician colony and was subsequently conquered by the Carthaginians and Romans. The town thrived as an important trading port under Roman rule, but once the Roman Empire faltered, Nora was invaded by opportunistic vandals and pirates. The inhabitants eventually abandoned the village and moved to the safer interior of Sardinia. Over the centuries Nora was forgotten, and it wasn't until 1952 that excavations began. Walking through the ruins, you'll be amazed by what was unearthed.

At the site, you will find thermal bathes, a Carthaginian temple dedicated to the goddess Tanit, and Roman villas adorned with colorful mosaics. The most recent excavation is a fantastic Roman forum. Your guide will explain what life was like in ancient Nora and even hypothesize about the part of the village that is buried just offshore after sinking into the sea.

Leaving Nora behind, you'll return to Cagliari, and enjoy a brief stop for photos at the 11th century Church of Saint Ephisius, which is named for the town's patron saint. Afterwards, you'll transfer back to the pier where your tour concludes.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 75-minutes of moderate walking and standing. There are some uneven surfaces, steps and inclines to negotiate at the archaeological site. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not considered suitable for those with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The order of the sites viewed or visited may vary.

  • Cagliari & St Joseph’s Convent

Drive along Cagliari's southeast coast to the rocky formation known the Devil's Saddle. The small harbor here shelters pleasure craft, and the beach stretches between the sea and the great salt works. The salt ponds take on an extraordinary scarlet color when water evaporation is at its peak, and in winter they attract a large number of migratory birds, especially the pink flamingo.

Your coach will continue to Poetto Beach, a stretch of very fine sand. Snap a few photos and then continue to Mount Urpino for a view of the entire area from Cagliari to Molentargius Pond. You will also stop at the striking Saint Joseph's Convent to sample traditional Sardinian snacks and wines.

The convent dates back to the 14th century and is of enormous historic and architectural interest. Its walls exemplify the use of ladiri, a Sardinian mud brick. Two noble Sardinian families, the Vittorini of Marsiglia and the Scolopi, have been patrons of the convent for centuries.

It is believed the Vittorini family built the two oldest rooms between 1100 and 1300 AD. Historians believe the Horses Room may once have been the Church of the Vineyard Madonna; others think it was the Byzantine Church of Saint Nicholas. The Scolopi family has owned the convent since 1870 and they go to great lengths to ensure authenticity in the ongoing use of many ancient items and traditions. After departing from the monastery, you'll enjoy a brief drive through the city center, stopping at the viewpoint just outside the Old Town.

Please note: While largely panoramic, this tour does include approximately 90-minutes of moderate walking and standing. There are some uneven surfaces and steps to negotiate. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned only to participate to the extent of their personal stamina and ability and may make arrangements with the guide to not participate in some or all of the walking portions of the tour. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The order of the sites viewed or visited may vary.
