  • Villa Durazzo & Santa Margherita

Cruise to nearby Santa Margherita Ligure, a Tuscan treasure on the Italian Riviera, where you will explore a 17th-century villa with spectacular gardens and a lovely Baroque church.

After departing from the pier in a private boat, you will cruise up the gorgeous coastline toward nearby Santa Margherita Ligure, a wonderful resort town with few pretensions. More often referred to locally as “Santa” rather than by its entire name, this Italian Riviera gem blankets the hills of a picturesque cove in the Tigullio Bay.

Approaching by sea will afford you a grand perspective of the setting. Mediterranean vegetation provides the backdrop enhanced by palms, pine trees and gardens leading down to the shore. Your tour begins with a short walk through town to Villa Durazzo, which Marquis Durazzo built in the 17th century.

While the interior is richly adorned with statues, paintings, tapestries, marble work and Venetian chandeliers, the gardens are even more spectacular. The Durazzo family planted the citrus garden closest to the sea, the palm-dotted Italian garden followed in the 19th century, and a wild English wood was added in the 20th century. Winding paths adorned with fountains and statues connect the green spaces.

Following your visit, a delightful descent toward the marina will bring you to the baroque-style St. James Church and the smaller Oratory of Saint Erasmus. Named for St. Elmo, the protector of sailors, the oratory is decorated with maritime items and paintings.

The remainder of your time in Santa Margherita is yours to enjoy as you please before cruising back to the pier in Portofino.

Please note: This tour includes just under 2 hours walking, plus any additional walking at the guests’ discretion during free time. There will be cobblestone surfaces, steps and inclines to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with walking difficulties. • Experience Rapallo & Santa Margherita

Enjoy the charms of two wonderfully complementary resort towns on the Italian Riviera: inspiring Rapallo and neighboring Santa Margherita Ligure.

After departing from the pier in a private boat, you will cruise up the gorgeous coastline to Rapallo. A medieval castle stands sentinel in the harbor of Rapallo, a resort town where literary figures such as poet Ezra Pound and novelist D.H. Lawrence once lived. The town is as inspiring today as it was in their time, particularly along the seaside promenade.

After learning a bit about the rather petite castle right on the shoreline, you will continue on to a shop in the historical town center. Here, the owner will demonstrate pesto-making Rapallo-style. As an accompaniment, you will enjoy a glass of vermentino or pigato wine, focaccia, bruschetta, black olives and of course fresh-made pesto sauce. It’s a real treat, especially since all of the ingredients are local.

Following the tasting, you will cruise to neighboring Santa Margherita Ligure, a wonderfully relaxing town with few pretensions. More often referred to locally as “Santa” rather than by its entire name, this Italian Riviera gem blankets the hills of a picturesque cove.

Your first stop will be Nostra Signora della Rosa, an opulent Baroque church decorated with spectacular frescoes, chandeliers and gold leaf. The remainder of your time in Santa Margherita is yours to enjoy as you please. You may wish to consider shopping, as there are inspiring boutiques near the waterfront. Following your free time, you’ll sail back to Portofino.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 hours of easy to moderate walking, plus any additional walking at the guests’ discretion during free time. There will be cobblestone surfaces, steps and inclines to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with walking difficulties.
