Muscat is the capital of Oman, a sovereign country. Muscat has been important since the 6th century BC, when Persians controlled the port. It was under Portuguese domination from 1508 to 1650, and subsequently the Iranians gained control of the city. Muscat became the capital of independent Muscat and Oman in 1741- the country’s name was changed to just Oman in 1970. Muscat offers a number of exciting excursions including dolphin watching and off-road desert adventures.

  • Mystical Muscat With Grand Mosque

One of the oldest cities in the Middle East, Muscat was founded because of its excellent natural harbor and remains an important hub for international trade today. Occupied by the Portuguese in the 16th century, many buildings still date from this period and display a distinctly Portugese style; however, the architectural influences of the city also include Persian, Indian, African, Arabian, and modern Western styles.

Leaving from the port of Mina Sultan Qaboos, you will first drive through Oman's exclusive residential district of Shati Al Qurum, and then pass through the city's Diplomatic area. Surprisingly, although the climate can be quite severe, the city is remarkably green with tree-lined streets, lush parks and decorative flowers and shrubs accenting the landscape. The first stop on your tour is at the amazing Grand Mosque. This religious landmark for Oman is one of the largest mosques in the world and with its five majestic minarets and intricate designs, is considered by many to be an architectural wonder. Adding to the Mosque's allure are the exquisitely maintained and well-planned lawns and attractive gardens that are found within the complex. Next, drive along the coastal road to Muttrah, past the fish market and the Corniche with its beautiful merchants' houses and views of the sparkling turquoise sea, and on to the delights of the vibrant Muttrah Souq. Enjoy free-time here to explore the narrow alleys of the souk, with its cubby-hole shops offering exquisite silver jewelry, Omani khanjars (daggers), exotic and fragrant spices and teas, antiques, and handicrafts in copper, camel bone, wood, and leather.

From Muttrah Souq, it's a short drive to the site of your next stop, Bait Al Zubair, a private museum displaying a wealth of exhibits of the country's cultural heritage. Items include collections of weaponry, jewelry, clothing, paintings, photographs and maps. Before returning to the ship, you'll have a chance to see the beautiful Al Alam Palace and stroll through the grounds outside. The Palace, an official sultan's residence, has some breathtakingly lovely views of picturesque Muscat Bay. Strategically positioned between the 16th-century medieval fortresses of Jalali and Mirani, the palace style is a modern mix of Oriental and Occidental, radiant with its colorful hues of rich blues and gold.

Please note: This tour includes a considerable amount of walking and may not be suitable for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Lightweight clothing and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Suitable attire is required for entering the Mosque. Shorts, culottes, tight trousers and leggings are not permitted. Trousers and skirts must cover the ankle, and women must have their head covered with a scarf and wear long-sleeved shirts. No tight or see-through blouses are permitted, even if a jacket is worn over them.

An unexpectedly lush and fertile area, this region has been cultivated for hundreds of years with a variety of crops, including citrus fruits and dates. • Iconic Landmarks & Al Bustan Palace Lunch

Delve into the Omani way of life by visiting the massive Grand Mosque and a vibrant, 200-year-old marketplace before savoring a sumptuous lunch at an exclusive seaside hotel during this tour created especially for Regent’s 2016 Reunion Cruise.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a leisurely and picturesque drive to the Grand Mosque, a modern architectural treasure that holds as many as 20,000 worshipers. The only mosque in Oman open to non-Muslims, this magnificent building sits within a walled compound with five distinct minarets that represent the five pillars of Islam.

While walking about the interior of the mosque, you may see a Swarovski crystal chandelier in the central dome that was once the world’s largest. In fact, the size of the mosque is staggering throughout, as are the dimensions of some of its contents.

The main prayer hall is topped with a single Persian carpet, hand-loomed with 1,700 million knots. It took hundreds of weavers well over two years to make the 21-ton carpet.

Your next destination, the bustling Muttrah Souq is quite the contrast to the serenity of the mosque. One of the oldest markets in Oman, it is characterized by narrow winding alleys lined with countless stalls filled with traditional merchandise such as silver jewelry, antiques and exotic perfumes and spices.

After shopping, you will rejoin your coach and proceed to the elegant six-star Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton hotel, for an international buffet lunch. Designed with Arab and Art Deco influences, it is a magnificent setting with the longest private beach in the country. Following your leisurely lunch in this premier luxury setting, you will transfer back to the pier.

  • Visit of Al Hoota Cave

Explore a massive limestone cave that was formed millions of years ago and then learn about its formation and the creatures that live inside at a geological exhibition.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a two and one-half hour circuitous drive inland through some of the most hauntingly beautiful scenery in Oman. As you near your destination, craggy Jebel Shams, the country’s tallest mountain, will come into sight. At its foothills, you will find Al Hoota Cave, the only such underground wonderland in the Arabian Peninsula that is open to the public.

Although estimated to be two million years old, the cave wasn’t discovered until the 1960s when a shepherd found that one of his goats had fallen through an opening in the ground. Like other caves in Oman, Al Hoota was created by slightly acidic water that slowly dissolved the limestone underground. What it left behind is absolutely spectacular, especially when eerily illuminated.

While walking through Al Hoota Cave, you will see unusually shaped stalagmites and stalactites, including one that resembles a lion and others that look like curtains. The cave also contains four lakes full of small fish that are blind and lack pigmentation because they live in total darkness.

  • Dolphin Watching

Get face-to-face with Oman's abundant marine life during this dolphin watching and snorkeling expedition in Muscat.

Depart for the brief morning drive to the marina, and your awaiting boat. Upon arrival, you will embark your boat, and set out in search of dolphins and whales about a mile off the rugged Muscat coast. Although sightings are not guaranteed, it is not unusual to spot three or four different varieties of dolphin or toothed whales during this relaxing trip out to sea. If you are lucky, you might even encounter some of the larger species of filter-feeding, or baleen whales.

Spinners are the most common and acrobatic of the dolphin species found in Omani waters, and travel in pods that can number more than a thousand fish. They appear to breed year-round, as evidenced by the number of tiny pink newborn calves swimming close to their mothers; at times, no bigger than a human infant. No one knows why this dolphin species spins high through the air the way they do, but this action is thought to be a display of fitness or vigor.

Next, you will proceed to Bander Khiran. Upon arrival, you will have an opportunity to snorkel in the crystal-clear waters, and explore the coral beds that abound with a variety of exotic fish.

Please note: You will spend approximately 3 hours aboard the boat. Guests wishing to snorkel should wear their swimsuit under a cover-up, as there are no changing facilities. In addition, wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, and bring a towel from the ship. Although dolphin sightings are common, they are not guaranteed. Snorkeling equipment will be provided. Participants will snorkel directly from the boat in water 15 to 20 feet deep. Guests must be able to swim, and get in and out of the boat without assistance in order to participate. This tour is not recommended for guests with neck or back injuries, guests with limited mobility or guests who utilize a wheelchair.
