Auckland, New Zealand-port

Auckland, “The City Of Sails”, is spread over a narrow isthmus between the sparkling waters of the Waitemata and Manukau Harbours on New Zealand’s North Island. It earns its sobriquet from having more boats per capita than any other city in the world. The first settlers here were the Maori, and are still a vibrant component of its cosmopolitan population. Auckland offers the visitor all the amenities of a world-class city. Browse the shops of Queen Street or the Parnell area with its galleries and boutiques in quaintly restored Victorian buildings. For a magnificent panorama of the city travel to Mount Eden, the city’s highest point, or visit the Skytower for loftier views. Minutes from downtown you can relax on a black sand beach, or explore the America’s Cup Yachting Village. Further afield there are the spectacular pine-clad Waitakere Mountains, the amazing Waitomo Glowworm Caves and the verdant vineyards of Kumeu River Wines.

Antarctic Encounter & Underwater World

Moderate Activity/Walking Regent Choice

Duration: 3 1/2 hours

Tour Code: AKL-008

Get a rare, up-close look at Antarctic's native wildlife without enduring the rigors of their icy domain, and then enjoy a bird's-eye view of Auckland from its soaring Sky Tower.

Boarding your coach at the pier, you will first drive to Kelly Tarlton's Sea Life Aquarium. Named for a well-known Kiwi diver and adventurer, this enlightening attraction replicates life in the Antarctic, both above and below the icy waters. A moving walkway will transport you through clear acrylic underwater tunnels, revealing all sorts of marine life. You may see sharks being hand-fed, massive short-tail stingrays and delicate seahorses among the various exhibits. There's also a colony of King and Gentoo penguins that may be frolicking in the water or playing in the snow. And be sure to see the replica of Captain Robert Scott's hut from his ill-fated 1911 polar exploration.

Continuing on, your tour next travels to Auckland's soaring 1,072-foot Sky Tower, the tallest manmade structure in New Zealand. Step inside one of the glass-fronted elevators and you'll be whisked to the top, where on a clear day you can see more than 50 miles in every direction. The Sky Tower is an engineering marvel built of high-strength, high-performance concrete and steel so strong it can withstand winds gusting up to 125 mph. To ensure that the tower remained perfectly straight during construction, seven global positioning satellites were used to confirm its exact position.

Following your visit to the Sky Tower, you'll rejoin your coach and transfer directly back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes just over 2-hours of easy to moderate walking/standing over mostly flat surfaces. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach, and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability and the tour is not recommended for those who suffer from a fear of heights. Weather appropriate, casual clothing; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The order of the sites viewed or visited may vary.
