This charming city lies at the head of a fiord-like inlet and is surrounded by seven hills. In the early days, Dunedin was the largest and wealthiest city in the country, thanks mainly to the gold fields. It has been responsible for many firsts: the first to have gaslight, water mains, hydro power and steam trams. Discover the rugged, beautiful Otago Peninsula, filled with geological wonders, and gaze in awe at the great albatross with its ten-foot wingspan. Keep an eye out for fur seals on the rocks and perhaps some yellow-eyed penguins. Visit Larnach Castle, a historic 19th-century property surrounded by gardens and splendid views. It is often said that Dunedin is the most perfectly preserved Victorian City anywhere. Explore historic Dunedin with its splendid Victorian and Edwardian stone buildings. Look for delightful local crafts, artwork, wool and leather items among the souvenirs. Enjoy a wide variety of cuisines as well as lamb and seafood.

  • Highlights of Dunedin

Set at one end of a beautiful natural harbor lays the elegant city of Dunedin. Known for being home to some of the country's most glorious Victorian structures, its streets are adorned with a remarkable collection of historic buildings, cathedrals and churches that serve to attract visitors from around the world. Recognized as the nation's earliest seat of learning, it was the efforts of the area's early European settlers that were instrumental in establishing the country's commercial wealth.

Your tour begins with a picturesque drive past the charming towns of Sawyer's Bay, Roseneath and St. Leonard's, which all rest along the shores of beautiful Otago Harbor. Making your way into the city, your first stop is at Olveston, a Jacobean-styled house made of doublebrick, faced with Oamaru stone and Moeraki gravel. Set in an acre of land that is sheltered by stately trees, this graceful and unique home that was built between 1904 and 1906 offers a true glimpse into the refined way of life in days past and holds 35 rooms within its 3 stories and basement.

Departing from Olveston, your tour continues on through the city, passing several historical landmarks including the Gothic revival-styled Otago University, the Law Courts, Otago Boys High School and First Church, the Edwardian mansions of Royal Terrace and High Streets, and the Greek revival-styled ANZ Bank.

Your last stop will be at the Botanical Gardens. Located at the northern end of the city, the Gardens cover some 69 acres and were the first public botanical gardens to be established in New Zealand. Set amongst well-manicured lawns, splashing fountains and statuary, you'll find an extensive collection of camellias, annuals and herbaceous borders along with a garden of fragrant and colorful roses. The Winter Garden Glasshouse has a great range of temperate species on display and there is also a substantial rock garden to be found. Free time is provided for you to fully explore the Gardens on your own and local guides are on hand to answer any questions you may have. Perhaps you'll want to engage in feeding some of the ducks, a popular activity for visitors to the Gardens and duck feed will be available at the Information Center.

At the conclusion of your visit, your coach will return you to the pier, traveling via the city center. Guests may elect to be dropped off here and catch a shuttle back to the ship at their leisure.

Please note: Comfortable walking shoes and a light raincoat are recommended. The order of the sites visited may vary. This tour does not operate with a separate guide, but rather with a driver/guide.

  • The Taieri Gorge Railway Experience

Disembarking the ship, your train awaits you at the pier where you'll begin a journey that is sure to be a highlight of your visit to New Zealand. You’ll be welcomed aboard by the friendly crew as you settle in for an amazing excursion into areas only accessible by train.

Upon leaving the port area, you'll first travel alongside beautiful Otago Harbor before turning inland to traverse suburban Dunedin. Leaving the city behind, your train will first pass through the fertile farmland of the Taieri plains before climbing into the Taieri River Gorge. Famous for its sheer cliff faces and dramatic ravines that frame the paradoxically tranquil Taieri River, the kaleidoscope of spectacular scenery that unfolds before you is quite simply, breathtaking. The railroad itself is a true marvel, having been built by early pioneers through some of New Zealand's most rugged terrain; its very existence is considered by many to be a remarkable feat. From your vantage point aboard the train, you'll get an up-close look at the intricate work of the skilled railway gangs, stonemasons and engineers who carved the high bridges and produced the labyrinth of latticework that supports the soaring viaducts that comprise this historic train route.

As you relax and enjoy the magnificent landscape passing by, you will be served both a morning tea and a light lunch aboard the train. During the course of your journey, the train will wind its way through the gorge, passing one unspoiled panorama after another while navigating through rock tunnels and crossing dramatic bridges suspended high above the river below. Several stops will be made along the route for you to capture some photos that will surely become memorable keepsakes. Friendly volunteers will walk around the carriages to answer questions and give insights along the way.

Returning to the city, the tour concludes at the Dunedin Railway Station, a superb example of Victorian architecture. You can choose to remain in town and return to the ship with the shuttle, or continue to the port.

Please note: Although there is minimal walking on this tour, guests must be able to get on and off the railway cars which require managing three to four high steps. A wheel chair accessible railway car might be available if requested in advance. Comfortable clothing and a light raincoat are recommended.

  • Taieri Gorge Railway and Olveston House

Ride a train through some of New Zealand’s most spectacular countryside and then see how Dunedin’s elite lived more than 100 years ago at a historical estate.

After departing from the pier, you will soon board the famed Taieri Gorge Railway for an unforgettable train ride through the countryside. You will travel in either a beautifully restored 1920s carriage or in a contemporary one that has also been designed with large windows and open platforms for panoramic viewing.

During the journey, you will travel across curved bridges and stone viaducts, pass through mountain tunnels, and view ever-changing landscapes ranging from fertile farmland to forests of towering kahikatea, New Zealand’s tallest indigenous tree. The highlight will be the rugged gorge that the Taieri River has carved out of the bedrock over the eons.

The scenery will be absolutely breathtaking all the way to spectacular Pukerangi, the turn-around point for the return to Dunedin. Commentary will be provided throughout the trip, which will enhance your understanding of the region’s history. You will learn about the wild gold rush days, the early pioneers and perhaps the odd story of New Zealand’s only castle. Along the way, you’ll be treated to a morning tea and later, a boxed picnic-style lunch.

As you will learn, these incredible birds have a fascinating social and family life. While seeming so ungainly on the ground, they are truly magnificent to watch in flight. What an exhilarating experience it is to have one of these huge Albatrosses, with its incredible wing span of nearly 10 feet, glide smoothly and gracefully close by.

  • Pride of the Southbrewery & Otago Museum

Sample a selection of unique beers at the Speight’s Brewery and then delve into the history of the Otago region by browsing natural history exhibits in Dunedin’s museum.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at Speight’s Brewery, which has been in the same location since opening in 1876. While touring this eight-floor Dunedin icon, you will discover that it is a rare gravity-fed brewery and one of only two in the world that uses a certain open vat that allows Speight’s to produce beers from the original recipes.

Later, you will sample several beers, some of which will capture those 19th-century flavors. The tastes also reflect the water from the natural spring under the brewery.

Continuing on, you will stop at a nearby alehouse for a hearty lunch that may include fresh cod fried in batter made with Speight’s beer. Afterwards, you will browse the Stories of the South exhibit in the Otago Museum. The displays show how the land in the Otago region has shaped the lives of New Zealanders from the Maori to the European immigrants.

You may also see the world’s largest collection of extinct moa skeletons, the remains of an extinct Haast’s giant eagle and the country’s largest fossil, a 23-foot-long aquatic plesiosaur. The stories behind these discoveries are just as intriguing as the exhibits.
