Straegically located at the end of the Malaysian peninsula, the island nation of Singapore is a modern, thriving metropolis and a true melting pot of cultures. Singapore offers diverse colorful ethnic quarters; a fantastic array of superb cuisines; and a shopping mecca second to none. In many ways Singapore (the name means Lion City) was built by Sir Stamford Raffles. Coming ashore to a tiny fishing village in 1819, through trade treaties and business acumen, he laid the foundation for one of the most amazing urban success stories in history. Today, travelers can embrace exotic sights and sounds as they stroll or ride a trishaw through Chinatown, the Arab Quarter or Little India. Head down to the scenic Boat Quay for unrivaled views of the harbor and stop at one of the many international eateries for a refreshing repast. Shop along famous Orchard Road with its merchandise from every corner of the Pacific Rim; embark on a night safari at the Singapore Zoo or relax in the verdant shade of the Bukit Timah Nature Preserve. Be sure to leave time to try a refreshing Singapore Sling at the bar at Raffles Hotel.

Its rich material legacy and heritage are enhanced by state-of-the-art technology, coupled with educational interactive displays for children. • The Way We Live

Don't miss this unique opportunity to observe and experience the Singaporean lifestyle during a scenic and informative tour of the city.

Begin with a visit to the oldest Indian temple in Singapore. You will soon see that many places of worship exist in close proximity to one another when you continue on with a visit to the oldest Buddhist monastery in Singapore - considered a National Monument for its historical and architectural value.

Next drive to Toa Payoh, a first generation New Town built in the late 1960s to solve the acute shortage of proper housing in Singapore. Today, 87% of the population lives in a HDB flat. Stroll through the Town Center, where you can mingle with the local people and indulge in a bit of neighbourhood shopping in the many shops selling all sorts of merchandise. View the many communal facilities that make the town self-contained, including a bus interchange, sub-way station, schools, clinics, community center, parks, a sports stadium, an indoor sports hall, and a swimming pool complex.

From here you will take a subway for a 5 minute drive to Bishan, a second generation New Town, designed and built in the early 1990’s to accommodate the lifestyle of a more affluent and wealthier population. As a special treat, you will have the opportunity to visit a local Singaporean’s family home.

There are many contrasts between the first and second generation New Towns. The later blocks of second-generation flats are of a more contemporary design and nearly twice the height of the first generation flats. The town center is occuped by a large shopping mall that caters to the shopping and entertainment needs of the whole community. Many of the communal facilities are located near to the shopping mall.

Our final stop on this tour will be to Singapore's latest downtown Icon – The Marina Barrage. Built across the mouth of the Marina Channel, the Marina Barrage creates Singapore’s 15th reservoir, and the first in the heart of the city. With a catchment area of 10,000 hectares, or one-sixth the size of Singapore, the Marina catchment is the island’s largest and most urbanised catchment. Together with two other new reservoirs, the Marina Reservoir will boost Singapore’s water catchment from half to two-thirds of the country’s land area. The Marina Barrage is the result of Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew’s vision nearly two decades ago when he envisaged damming the mouth of the Marina Channel to create a freshwater reservoir.

Please note: This tour involves approximately 1.5 hours of walking, mainly over level surfaces. The tour sequence may vary.

  • Founding Footsteps of Raffles

Long ago, Sir Stamford Raffles had a vision of transforming Singapore into a vital international port and trading center for the Far East. This tour will retrace the course of that dream come true.

Depart the pier for a picturesque riverboat ride down the Singapore River. For centuries, the bumboat shuttled goods around Singapore from the trading ships, but today serves to steer us through a kaleidoscope of historic river and harbor images, including the go-down warehouses and shop houses, six British bridges and the gracious buildings of the old waterfront. During your boat ride, you will take in splendid views of these sites, all set against the towering skyline of the business and hotel district.
