  • Magic Min Nan: a Cultural Show

Watch a mesmerizing cultural performance known as the Magic Min Nan, a beautiful expression of ancient traditions that continue to flourish in south China.

Depart from the pier and commence a 45-minute drive through the prosperous island city of Xiamen, which is also known as Amoy, primarily by Chinese in the southern Fujian Province that speak the ancient dialect of Min Nan. Full of colonial charm, Xiamen still retains much of its allure and character from the past, as you will discover at the Cultural Art Center.

Upon arriving at the center, you will be treated to an enlightening cultural show entitled Magic Min Nan. Sit back and enjoy, as this large-scale theatrical performance is filled with action that reflects the folkloric traditions of south China.

The elaborate sets change frequently to accommodate entertaining puppet shows, spirited dancers in traditional costumes, and an amusing satire on the classic Chinese tea ceremony. Another act in the performance involves the martial art of Shaolin Kung Fu, a version of which was born in the Fujian Province.

During much of the performance, dramatic music plays in the background and 3D lasers illuminate the stage in bright, ever-moving colors. It is a truly mesmerizing experience that is not only memorable but also educational, as you will gain great insight into the traditions of the Fujian province. After the curtain goes down on the Magic Min Nan show, you will rejoin your coach and transfer back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes minimal walking and is mostly seated in nature. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Casual clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended. As there are few overseas travelers visiting Xiamen, there are no full-time English-speaking tour guides and no formal guiding qualifications required. Guiding here is primarily conducted by senior college students who have been trained as part-time guides. While most do have previous experience in guiding for visiting cruise ships and are enthusiastic to show you their city and country, they may lack some of the professional guiding skills found in other, more touristic destinations such as Beijing and Shanghai.

  • A Day in Quanzhou

Explore the treasures of ancient Quanzhou, a city packed with culture and history.

Famous as the start of the Maritime Silk Road and the largest port in Asia during the Song and Yuan dynasties, Quanzhou was once visited by legendary travelers, such as Marco Polo and Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta, who compared Quanzhou to the Egyptian port of Alexandria. The city was once crowded with the foreigners from eastern Africa and the Mediterranean countries doing business and preaching various religions in China, Quanzhou is also named by UNESCO as a "Museum of Religions".

After enjoying a traditional Chinese lunch at local restaurant, take a leisure stroll along the local historical Tumen Street, lying in the center of the city proper.

Along the Tumen Street you will walk pass the majestic Qingjing Mosque (also known as the Ashab Mosque), built to resemble a mosque in Damascus, Syria, in 1009. It is one of the oldest Arab-style mosques in China. About 150 meters away from the mosque, there is also the colorful Guan Yue Temple, where you may see the local people moving in and out non-stop to pray.

  • A Taste of Local Life in Xiamen

This limited participation tour gives you a true picture of local life in this charming seaside city.

Your tour begins with a scenic coach drive along the eastern bank of Xiamen but before long, you will stop and leave your coach behind, transferring to your next mode of transportation, a bicycle! Climbing aboard your bike, you will set-off on a 40-minute cycling tour along the Island Ring Road, enjoying the fresh air and Xiamen's celebrated sea view.

After pedaling your way to Seacoast Square, you will next participate in a traditional Tai Chi class. Tai Chi is an ancient form of exercise originating from the unusual combination of self-defense and Taoism. Its slow, continuous movements create a harmony between the inner and outer body. Tai Chi features both the hard and soft martial art techniques and has been celebrated through generations of Chinese for its contribution toward human health and longevity. You will begin by observing a demonstration by the Chinese Tai Chi master and then be given the opportunity to learn the basic moves yourself.

The art of drinking and serving tea plays a major cultural role in China. The Chinese tea ceremony emphasizes what the tea tastes like and smells like and each step is meant to be a sensory exploration and appreciation. During your visit, you will be treated to Tie Guan Yin, a premium variety of Chinese oolong tea boasting a very flowery, delicate aroma. You will also be served some vegetarian pie from Nanputuo Temple, which is the local dessert that best harmonizes with the tea's aroma.

Lastly, your tour travels through the old town area of Xiamen where the main street is filled with shops of all kinds, both old and new. Many of the quaint side streets here remain the same as they were decades ago. A leisurely stroll through this colorful and bustling center allows you to fully soak in the atmosphere that characterizes Xiamen before returning to the pier.

  • Highlights of Xiamen

Experience China's historic and present-day traditions, cultures and lifestyles during this informative, half-day visit to Xiamen.

Depart the pier for the drive to the South Putuo Temple. Located on the southern outskirts of Xiamen, the South Putuo Temple was built during the Tang Dynasty more than 1,000 years ago. It is so named because it lies to the south of Putuoshan, one of the most respected Buddhist venues in China. Since 1924, the temple has also been the home and training center for men and women seeking the enlightened path to becoming a monk.

After entering via the front gate, you will walk to the Heavenly King Hall, which houses a huge laughing Buddha accompanied by four heavenly kings on either side.

Next, you will visit the Xiamen Overseas Chinese Museum. This interesting museum features three exhibition halls which house over 5,000 items. These include potteries, bronze wares, sculptures, paintings, photos and documents related to the history of overseas Chinese.

Following your museum visit, you'll take a scenic drive along the coastal highway. En route, a photo stop will be made at Xiamen's beautiful beach before attending an authentic Chinese tea ceremony. During this delicate and interesting tea ceremony, you will learn about the classification of different types of tea, and how the Chinese have transformed the simple act of drinking tea into a unique and refined art form.

Following your visit, you will rejoin your coach for the return drive to the pier.

Please note: As there are few overseas travelers visiting Xiamen, there are no full-time English-speaking tour guides and no formal guiding qualifications required. Guiding here is primarily conducted by senior college students who have been trained as part-time guides. • Tong'an Treasures

Enjoy the spiritual side of the beautiful Tong'an area by visiting two of its most cherished religious attractions: the district's only Confucian temple and its oldest Buddhist temple.

Depart from the pier for a leisurely drive north and inland to Tong'an, an administrative district known for its natural beauty, hot springs and agricultural bounty. While vastly pleasing to the eye, Tong'an is also known for nurturing the spirit through its many temples. Perhaps the most revered is the Tong'an Confucian Temple, which was initially constructed in the 10th century and later rebuilt in the 19th century.

Surrounded by a lovely granite and brick wall, the elegant temple is the only one of its kind in the district dedicated to the philosophical teachings of Confucius. Meandering through the serene setting, you'll appreciate the temple's graceful architecture, symbolic sculptures and manicured landscaping. At its heart lies the Museum of Tong'an, a treasure-trove of relics collected over the past two thousand years.

Continuing on, your historical and cultural enlightenment continues at the nearby Fan Tian Temple. Constructed at the southern foot of the Dalun Mountain during the Sui Dynasty more than 1,400 years ago, it is the oldest Buddhist temple in the entire Fujian Province. Its oldest remaining building is the Brahman Tower, a three-story stone edifice that lords over the temple grounds. After an enriching visit at the Fan Tian Temple, you'll drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes over 90-minutes of moderate walking with some steps to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Casual, weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The Confucius Temple is closed on Monday and will be replaced with a visit to the Sauce Culture Park.
