The island has been continuously inhabited by the British since the Sea Venture, captained by George Somers, was shipwrecked here in 1609, the inspiration for Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. Hamilton is the capital and heart of the island. Excellent shopping and dining venues can be found right on Front Street, opposite the pier. Among the attractions not to miss are: Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo (BAMZ), all conveniently located in a complex on North Shore Road; St. Peter’s Church, believed to be the oldest Anglican church in the Western hemisphere, and stunning in its simplicity with its rough-hewn pillars, exposed cedar beams and candlelit chandeliers; and St. Catherine Fort, well-preserved and a great vantage point for photos.

  • Crystal Caves & Tuckers Town Drive

Boarding a van at the pier, this tour first takes you past the Botanical Gardens while on your way to Crystal Caves, an amazing natural grotto of stalactites and stalagmites, floodlit for your viewing pleasure. So named because of the crystal clear water that flows through the cave and forms a lake, the azure blue water is so clear that you can actually see the cave's floor which is 55 feet below the surface. This intriguing and fascinating attraction was actually discovered by accident when two local boys who were searching for a lost ball stumbled across the cave in 1907. Descending eighty-one steps to the floor of the cave, you'll then proceed on a wooden pontoon that has been constructed over the waters of the lake. Be sure to have your guide point out the original entrance the boys lowered themselves from which appears as a small skylight in the cave's roof.

Following your visit to the Caves, your driver/guide will take you on a wonderful overview of the exclusive residential area of Tuckers Town. Real estate in this area begins at around $10 million dollars and culminates in Billionaires Row where you'll see homes of some of the world's wealthiest people, including the waterfront estates of Ross Perot and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Get a close-up look at these pristine estates with their well-manicured lawns and rambling mansions in this gated community that is home to the rich and famous.

A brief photo stop at John Smith Beach is included before traveling back to the pier in Hamilton.

Please note: To enter the cave you must descend down 81 steps and then proceed over pontoon bridges. Therefore, it is not suitable for guests who utilize a wheelchair and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina.
