Discover splendid Ancona’s fascinating historic landmarks and behold the dazzling coastal landscapes of the Riviera del Conero on this guided coach and walking tour. Begin your exploration with a drive through the center of Ancona, passing the ornate 15th-century Merchants’ Lodge and the superb Trajan Arch, erected in AD 115 in honor of its namesake Roman emperor, who was responsible for establishing the port of Ancona. You’ll visit the Cathedral of Saint Ciriaco, an impressive and elegant Romanesque building with Byzantine and Gothic flourishes. Inside the sanctuary, find an early Christian crypt, recycled Roman columns and a revered 17th-century Madonna. Continuing on foot, you’ll view the ochre 15th-century Palace of the Government, elegant Pope’s Square and the town’s main street, Corso Mazzino, which was once a river. In the waterfront Passetto district, contemplate the victims of WWI at a stirring memorial from which you’ll enjoy lovely views over the city. Rejoin your coach for a drive along the Riviera del Conero, a spectacular resort area studded with glorious beaches, reefs, coves and coastal cliffs, alighting in quaint Portonovo for a stunning panorama of Ancona’s dramatic coastline.
