  • D-Day Landing Beaches

Depart for a scenic drive through the now peaceful countryside of Normandy, where 60 years ago the most pivotal battle on the Western Front took place.

We begin in Arromanches, site of the artificial harbor which was pre-fabricated and towed here, helping the Allies bring supplies ashore. Remnants of the artificial port can still be seen today. Visit the Landing Museum here before having lunch.

After lunch, continue to St. Laurent and the moving American Cemetery which overlooks Omaha Beach, where some of the most intense fighting took place. Next visit Pointe du Hoc, where a heavily-armed German battery was heroically destroyed by American troops on the first day of the invasion. The view from here also provides a unique perspective on to the rugged terrain of Omaha Beach. Return to the ship following this moving and historical tour.

  • Deauville & Pays D'auge

This delightful excursion begins with a scenic drive along the Côte Fleurie, "The Flowery Coast." Along the way you will see chic resorts that are awash with color from the vibrant flowers that burst into bloom every summer. Among these resort areas is the world-famous international resort town of Deauville. The dazzling luxury of this vacation mecca was created by Duc de Morny in the 1860's.

After a brief orientation tour from your coach, you will be able to enjoy some free time to walk along famous "Planches" or simply relax with a piping-hot cup of coffee. From Deauville, your tour continues with a journey inland to the lush Pays d'Auge region.

Upon arrival in Breuil en Auge, the doors to the lovely slate-roofed Château du Breuil are opened and you will be treated to a visit of the castle and its bright copper-silled distillery. The Château was built between the 16th-17th centuries and has often been the home to noteworthy families over the years. Here, in the cellar of the Castle, the Calvados age in deep oak casks as they have for many centuries. Before leaving, enjoy a tasting of the Château's delectable product.

Following your time at Château du Breuil, you will re-board your coach for the return trip to Honfleur, where your tour concludes.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1-hour of easy to moderate walking, plus any walking at the guests' discretion during free time. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned only to participate to the extent of their personal stamina and ability and may make arrangements with the guide to not participate in some of the walking portions of the tour. Weather appropriate clothing; flat, comfortable walking shoes; cap and sunglasses are recommended.

  • Fecamp & Etretat

Departing Honfleur by motor coach, you will soon join the main highway. Traveling toward Fécamp, the road rolls through a switchback of breezy headlands and wooded valleys.

Once in Fécamp, your guide leads you on a brief walking tour of the vast Benedictine Palace. Combining Gothic and Renaissance styles, the palace pays homage to Alexander LeGrand, a local wine merchant of the 19th century who rediscovered the monk's 16th-century recipe for Benedictine, the famous herbal liquor. Building of the palace began in 1880.

Today, the palace incorporates a distillery and an eccentric museum packed with art treasures and curios. Documents and objects related to the production of Benedictine from the end of the 19th century to the present are also displayed. The adjacent halls provide an aromatic account of the 27 herbs and spices that go into making the liquor. After you pass through the laboratory and cellars toward the end of the visit, you will sample the Benedictine liquor.

Then, it's on to Etretat along a route that follows the Côte d'Albâtre, or alabaster coast, named for the chalky cliffs and milky waters that characterize the Normandy coastline. Due to the marvelous location on the coast, Etretat has always been associated with the sea. After a brief guided walk through town, you will have time to explore independently. Then, reboard you motor coach and enjoy the drive back to Honfleur.

Important Notes:Guests must be a minimum of 18 years old in order to participate in the liquor tasting. As this excursion involves walking over uneven and cobbled areas, as well as negotiating steps at Benedictine Palace, it is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. It is recommended that guests dress in warm, layered clothing and wear flat, comfortable shoes. Guests should also bring raingear in case of inclement weather. The order of sights visited may vary.

  • Caen & the Peace Memorial

Begin with a scenic drive through the countryside of Normandy to Caen near the Normandy Beaches and site of one of the fiercest battles of WWII.

Caen, which lies on the edge of flat country opening into northern France, became the hinge of the Allied advance out of their Normandy beachhead. It was also the key to the Germans' defensive strategy. Beginning on D-Day (June 6, 1944), it was subjected to a month of bombardment and shelling by U.S. and British forces that killed thousands of civilians and left the city largely destroyed. The Caen Memorial was born out of the desire to create a place for reflecting on wars on the basis of the experience of these memorable events. Far from concentrating solely on commemoration, the Memorial, a museum for peace, presents the stakes involved in the Second World War and the course and significance of the war. This unique museum utilizes a participatory approach to history, placing you in a multi-media, historical setting; bringing the action to life with you in its midst.

Following a visit of approximately two hours at this moving and thought provoking memorial, you'll re-board your coach and travel back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2-hours of panoramic driving. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned only to participate to the extent of their personal stamina and ability and may make arrangements with the guide to not participate in some of the walking portions of the tour. Weather appropriate clothing; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable shoes are recommended. There are some restrictions on photography within the memorial and guests should check with their guide before taking any pictures or video.
