Nauplion is one of Greece’s most beautiful towns with narrow streets, elegant Venetian houses and gracious neoclassical mansions. In the 13th century, following Byzantine rule, the Franks, Venetians and Turks each took possession, each leaving behind architectural monuments and traces of their culture. Take in the recently reopened Archeological Museum in Constitution Square, with a collection that includes pottery, jewelry, and some unique Mycenaean terracotta idols; and the National Gallery-Alexandros Soutzos Museum, with a permanent exhibition of paintings of the Greek War of Independence, as well as frequently changing temporary exhibits of local artists’ work.

  • Ancient Corinth and Navigation of the Corinth Canal

One hour after departing from the port of Nauplion you will reach the ancient town of Corinth where St. Paul lived and preached for two years. In ancient times, Corinth was amongst the richest cities and this is quite evident by its remains, including the huge Agora Market Place and Apollo's Temple.

The next site you will visit is the famous Corinth Canal. The canal is 4 miles long, 70 feet wide, 26 feet deep and has sloping sides which reach 170 feet. The canal's construction commenced in 1881, although the idea of connecting the Ionian and Aegean Seas seems to date back to at least Roman times. Boarding the local boat from the village of Isthmia, guests will traverse the canal, which takes approximately 45 minutes. Refreshments will be served during the canal crossing. After this unique experience, you will board your coach and return to Nafplio.

Please note: There is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes of walking involved with this tour. Due to typically hot summer temperatures, guests are advised to wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, as well as bring a bottle of water from the ship. The order of the sights viewed or visited may vary.

  • Ancient Corinth and Mycenae With Lunch

En route to Corinth this tour will briefly stop to take photos at the famous Corinth Canal. The Corinth Canal is 4 miles long, 70 feet wide, 26 feet deep and has sloping sides which reach 170 feet. The canal's construction commenced in 1881; although the idea of connecting the Ionian and Aegean Seas seems to date back to at least Roman times.

The next stop along the tour will be ancient Corinth. The ruins that lie in this area are a confusing mix of an ancient 6th-century BC Greek City and a 44 BC Roman city. The "newer" Roman city was built after Julius Caesar placed a colony of veterans on the desolate site which was, (until its destruction by Mummius and his ten legates in 146 BC) the surviving Greek city of Corinth. At the site you will be able to see ruins and excavations of both including a Christian basilica, the starting lines of a Greek race track, a sacred spring with its 5th-century BC, bronze lion's head spouts and the elaborate Roman Fountain of Peirene.

After having visited Corinth, your tour will proceed to Mycenae where lunch will be served at a local restaurant.

After lunch, guests will pass the famous Lion's Gate and enter the ancient citadel of Mycenae, which had been inhabited since 3000 BC. Inside the Cyclopean walls (to the right of the entrance) is the Grave Circle - the Royal Cemetery believed to have contained the body of Agamemnon. This is thought to be the true location, as a magnificent golden mask was excavated here. Outside of the walls and 400 yards from the Citadel site is the location of the startling Beehive Tomb of Agamemnon; also known as the Treasure of Atreus.

Please note: This tour includes extensive and strenous walking as well as over 200 steps to negotiate at Myceanae. The tour is not recommended for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Light-weight clothing; sun caps; sunglasses; sunscreen and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested.

  • Mycenae and Palamidi Fortress

A scenic drive through Nauplion and past the ancient sites of Tiryns and Argos will bring you to the ruins of Mycenae. Schlieman, a German archaeologist who was obsessed with finding the grave of King Agamemnon, carried out the first in-depth excavations here in 1876. His diligent work exposed the famous Lions Gate, the entrance to the city, which contains the shaft burial graves of some ancient nobles. A short distance away is the Beehive Tomb, so named due to its unusual shape.

On the second part of your journey you will return to Nauplion where the Castle of Palamidi stands. The fortress is very well preserved and this great mass of masonry, with walls and fortifications that made it impregnable, broods menacingly over the town. From this vantage point there is a fine panoramic view of the entire Nauplion Basin including the town of Nauplion and the Bourtzi offshore. This castle was built by the Venetians and the Turks as a fortress, but has more recently served as a prison.

Please note: This tour includes extensive walking and includes several steps to negotiate at Palamidi Castle. The tour is not recommended for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Light-weight clothing; sun caps; sunglasses; sunscreen and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested.

  • Epidaurus Theater and Palamidi Fortress

After leaving the pier, our tour begins by proceeding along a picturesque and twisting road, passing typically Greek country villages on the way to Epidaurus, which is situated on the cool slopes of a beautifully wooded valley. Epidaurus is known for its stunning ancient theater. One of the most important sanctuaries in the ancient world, Epidaurus was dedicated to the God of Medicine, Asklepios. The world famous Theater of Epidaurus, built in the 4th century BC, is a marvel of harmony and acoustics and the best preserved ancient theater in Greece. Built out of limestone, it seats 12,000 spectators. Attending the performances of ancient drama during the summer season is an unforgettable experience.

After your guided tour at the theater, you will have free time for a stroll, take photographs, or purchase refreshments at an area café.

After you re-board the coach and return to Nauplion, you will visit the fabulous Venetian fortress of Palamidi with its splendid views over the hill of Argonauplia, the town of Nauplion and the Bourtzi offshore. The fortress is very well-preserved and this great mass of masonry, with walls and fortifications that made it impregnable, broods menacingly over the town.

  • Walking Tour & Ouzo

Nauplion is one of Greece's prettiest towns. The narrow streets of the old town are filled with elegant Venetian houses and gracious, neoclassical mansions. The setting is dominated by the towering Palamidi Fortress. On this tour you will not only view the sites of Nauplion, but participate in them as well, as you experience a day in the life of Nauplion.

Your walking tour begins at the pier as you marvel at the beautiful neoclassical buildings lining the port, while walking to Kapodistriou Square and Park, dedicated to the memory of the first governor of Greece. In the park, with his beloved Palamidi in the background, is also the statue of Koloktronis, known as the Grand Old Man of the Morea, as he was the leader of the Greeks during the War of Independence. It was he who besieged the Turkish-occupied Palamidi citadel for 15 months before it was finally surrendered. Across the way is the current town hall building, originally the very first high school of Greece.

Continuing through the back streets not normally seen by tourists, you will come upon the Old Catholic Church and the 1702 Church of Agios Spyridon just below. The worry beads you see everywhere in Greece have a museum of their own in Nauplion and this tour will visit the Museum of Komboloi to learn of their origin.

Next, the tour will proceed through the popular Syntagma Square (Constitution Square), to visit the spectacular display of folk costumes and traditional textile-producing techniques at the Popular Art Museum, winner of the 1981 European Museum of The Year. After learning of the ways of ancient Greeks, the tour proceeds on to a wine shop, where you will enjoy a taste of a more modern Greek life and sample the favorite spirit of the Greeks: ouzo.

Please note: This tour includes extensive walking and is not recommended for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Light-weight clothing; sun caps; sunglasses; sunscreen and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested.
