  • Highlights of Punta Del Este

A wonderful overview of Punta del Este, this compact tour presents the marquee attractions, leaving plenty of time to explore on your own later.

Depart from the pier and begin driving through some of the most fashionable residential districts. It's no wonder that so many of the world's rich and famous make their homes in this vibrant, absolutely beautiful resort city. The views are stunning in every direction.

Known as the "St. Tropez of South America", Punta del Este features countless beaches, each with its own personality. You will pass the more reserved Playa Mansa, which curves around the calmer bay side of the city, as well as the more expansive Playa Brava, a favorite for surfers as it fronts the ocean.

The Ralli Museum of Contemporary Art is located in a lovely Spanish-style building in the fashionable Beverly Hills neighborhood. Here, you can browse the collection of paintings and sculpture by some of Latin America's most talented artists, complemented by European works by Dali, Chagall and others.

Next, you will visit Golero Avenue, the city's main thoroughfare and most renowned shopping district. Designer fashions, fine leather goods, and exquisite jewelry only touch upon the luxurious offerings. • Sunset and Champagne At Casapueblo

Watch a spectacular sunset from Casapueblo, the legacy of one of Uruguay’s most esteemed artists, who created the quirky hotel using only his imagination for a plan.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a picturesque drive along the coast toward Punta Ballena, a peninsula that juts into the mouth of the Rio de La Plata. Here you will stop at the iconic hotel Casapueblo.

Often called Uruguay’s most eccentric hotel, Casapueblo was designed by artist Carlos Páez Vilaró over the course of about 30 years. It started as the artist’s studio but grew to become a huge collection of rambling buildings that cling to a craggy hillside overlooking the sea.

Constructed by hand without a plan or even an end in sight, Casapueblo is stunningly whimsical, wonderfully peaceful and definitely unusual. Vilaró claimed that his design was inspired by ovenbirds, a species that builds domed nests that resemble outdoor ovens.

You might see other inspirations as you stroll about the hotel and grounds. Some people say whitewashed Casapueblo resembles a Greek village. Others see the influence of Spain’s ingenious architect Antoni Gaudí in the many curves, shapes and ornamentations. Still others liken Casapueblo to the cliff dwellings of the Native American Pueblos. Regardless, it’s magnificent.

Casapueblo faces west, the ideal setting for you to watch a sensational sunset from one of the terraces, an experience made even more enjoyable with a glass of champagne in hand. After toasting the sunset, you rejoin your coach and transfer back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes limited walking but there will be some steps to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Country club casual dress and flat, comfortable shoes are recommended.

  • Grill Class & Lunch At Country Lodge

Calling all meat lovers to the grill! This tour is an informal, hands-on class on the famous parrillada grilling techniques and traditions of Uruguay. Join your Culinary Center Chef and a local ‘parrillar’ grilling master for an end-to-end immersion in selecting fire woods, building an outdoor fire, preparing meats for grilling and finally, grilling them to perfection. Afterwards, enjoy a sumptuous lunch in a scenic setting.

Begin your day with our Chef in The Culinary Center for an introduction to today’s tour and a short review of meat cuts, charcuterie, meat quality criteria and grilling techniques.

Learn about Asado - the national tradition of Uruguay, where grilling meats are combined with a festive gathering of wine and friends.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a picturesque drive inland to La Salamora, a scenic, countryside lodge. A haven for nature lovers, you’re in just the right setting to discover the Uruguayan art of perfectly grilled meats, called ‘parrillada’. Chefs worldwide consider Patagonia the ‘culinary mecca’ for ‘parrillada’ and travel here to learn the methods and techniques (and secrets) of the astonishingly tender and flavorful grilled meats and root vegetables.

Relax in this informal outdoor setting as the grilling lesson begins. While learning how the meats are produced and supplied, you will snack on traditional appetizers such as local cheeses, salamis and country bread. As a complement, you will sample a traditional liquor made from the fruit of Pindo palms, also known as Jelly palms because their fruit is used for jams and jellies, as well. If you like, you can sample the grappa-like alcoholic beverage made with honey called grappamiel.

As the cooking class continues, you will learn more about various cuts of meat and sausages that are typically grilled. Peppers stuffed with provolone cheese and eggs are also popular items for grilling. In addition, the master chef will share a recipe for a unique “parrillada” dressing. Because of the many Italians who migrated to Uruguay, products like provolone cheese and dishes such as pasta are common here, as well as the love of good food, wine and company.

Throughout this relaxing day you will learn the proper way to start the fire, what woods burn best, and most essentially how to grill each item. As the meat cooks, you will prepare a classic dessert made with sweet potatoes and merengue. Of course, the highlight will be dining on the tender and varied meat dishes and assorted sides.

A digestive herb tea or coffee follows your meal and after a heartfelt goodbye to your hosts, you’ll return to the pier with memories of a unique and authentic culinary experience in Patagonia.

Please note: This tour includes limited walking; however, there may be some significant standing required during the cooking class and there are some uneven surfaces at La Salamora. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and may not be suitable for those with mobility concerns who are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate comfortable clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable shoes are recommended. Tour duration may vary due to traffic conditions.

  • Sea Wolves Island

Cruise around a protected reserve on an island lying six miles offshore and observe the world’s largest colony of non-migrating sea lions.

After departing directly from the pier in a sightseeing boat, you will cruise into the wide Rio de la Plata and head toward Sea Wolves Island, known locally as Isla de Lobos. While landing on the low-slung island is prohibited so as not to disturb the sea lions, you will cruise near the coastline and enjoy an unobstructed view of the animals.

You can expect them to be frolicking in the water, feeding on fish, drying off on rocky outcrops, and interacting with each other. Thousands of sea lions inhabit the island, and you can easily distinguish the males from the females as they are about three times larger and have more muscular necks.

South American sea lions, also known as maned seals, live about 20 years in the wild and are highly social. Although their numbers were once in decline due to hunting for their fur, meat and oil, the sea lions on Sea Wolves Island are protected and the colony is thriving.

You will also notice a towering lighthouse, which has the distinction of being the tallest one in Uruguay. It eventually replaced the original lighthouse from 1858, which was razed after sealers protested that the light scared the animals and inhibited their hunting.

After approximately 45-minutes of cruising around the Sea Wolves Island, you will return to the pier.

Please note: This tour is primarily a seated tour that takes place on a either a local boat or a catamaran. Participants must be able to negotiate the steps to enter and exit the vessel with limited assistance. This is a moving vessel with the sailing taking place on an open sea so the waters are usually choppy. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns, and not considered suitable for those who suffer from motion sickness. Weather appropriate clothing (there is the possibility you may get wet); sun cap; sunscreen; and sunscreen are recommended. As the floor of the vessel may become wet, flat shoes with a non-slip rubber sole are mandatory. Minimum age to participate is 8 years old. Photography and filming of wildlife is permitted; however, flash photography is not allowed. This tour may be cancelled without prior notice in the event of rough weather and/or sea conditions.
