Situated snugly in a well-protected bay of the Golfo Nuevo, Puerto Madryn is the Chubut region’s natural access point for the plains of Patagonia, a vast area covering a third of the country, but occupied by less than four percent of the population. The area was originally settled by a group of adventurous Welsh immigrants some 120 years ago. Although the town appears today unmistakably Argentine, Welsh customs, names and even some of the language have survived. Purto Madryn is your portal to the amazing nature reserves of Punta Tomba and the Peninsula Valdes.

  • Highlights of Puerto Madryn and Gaiman

Begin with a short drive to the center of lovely Puerto Madryn, an attractive little town that remains in the same spot where British immigrants, led by Viscount Madryn, founded a colony in 1880. Welsh immigrants established the small town of Trelew nearby. Today, local residents continue many of the traditions that their Welsh ancestors brought from the old world, particularly in Gaiman, another local village known for its quaint, red brick cottages. This village features many Welsh family names and continues its wonderful tradition of afternoon tea, Wales-style. After touring the town, we will visit a local restaurant in Gaiman, and enjoy a traditional tea, which includes homemade scones, cakes and breads, butter and jam. Enjoy the wonderful voices of a local Welsh choir during teatime.

  • Peninsula Valdes, Punta Norte & Visit to Estancia

Depart Puerto Madryn and have a scenic drive to Peninsula Valdes, one of the finest wildlife reserves in South America. At the entrance to the reserve, the Visitors' Centre has a small exhibit of local fauna and flora. Sea lions, sea elephants (in November), seals, guanacos, rheas and many seabirds are present in large numbers in the beaches and headlands. Sheep estancias, ranches, occupy most of the peninsula's interior. In the Golfo San José, just off the Isthmus, is the Isla de los Pájaros, Bird's Island a bird sanctuary off limits to humans but visible through a powerful telescope. Next you will go to Punta Norte, located at the extreme northwestern tip of Peninsula Valdes. Here there is a mixed colony of sea lions and sea elephants. They are easily photographed, but should not be approached too closely. Continue your tour to Estancia San Lorenzo located on the Northeastern extreme of Peninsula Valdes; here see its famous penguin rookery. Inside the estancia and in front of San Matias gulf we can find a unique colony of more than 200,000 Magellan penguins apart from wild fauna such as guanacos, choiques, maras, hares and lots of different marine birds. We will be able to explore this extraordinary scenery on local vehicles. Back at the Estancia, you will enjoy a typical Patagonian lamb barbecue lunch before your journey back to the pier.
