  • Praia Do Forte & Tamar Project

Explore Brazil’s lovely Coconut Coast to the northeast, where you will tour a centuries-old Portuguese fort, see how sea turtles have been protected, and relax on a popular beach.

Depart from the pier and begin a leisurely drive northeast along Coconut Road, a delightful thoroughfare that follows the palm-lined coast. Arriving in Praia do Forte, known as Castle Beach, you will explore the ruins of the 16th-century fortress Garcia D’Avila. One of the few remaining feudal forts in the Americas, it was built by Portuguese as a defense against French and Dutch invasions and pirate attacks.

Continuing on, you will walk to the headquarters of the Tamar Project, a government-backed alliance dedicated to protecting the sea turtles that live in the surrounding waters. Over the last three decades, the project has grown to serve dozens of coastal communities and has saved the lives of an estimated nine million turtles. By promoting ecotourism, the project has also provided employment for hundreds of Brazilians. It’s a fascinating success story that you will discover firsthand by observing some of the turtles that are being rehabilitated.

Then, after a traditional Brazilian buffet lunch at a nearby restaurant and free time for shopping, you will drive to Guarajuba Beach where you will be afforded some additional free time to enjoy its pleasures. Afterwards, you will return to the pier in Salvador.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 90 minutes of walking, plus any additional walking at the guests’ discretion during free time. There will be uneven, cobblestone and sandy surfaces to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not considered suitable for those with mobility concerns. Guests should be in good physical condition. Weather appropriate clothing (swimwear underneath for those who wish to swim at the beach); sun cap; sunglasses; a towel from the ship; and flat comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Flash photography of the turtles or any wildlife is prohibited. Those who participate in any water activities do so at their own risk and responsibility.

  • Highlights of Salvador

Begin with a scenic drive through the Lower City past the yacht club. Its marina is dotted with sleek sailing boats and yachts of Salvador's wealthy residents. Attracted by the scenic coast, the Barra district is the favored haunt of the city's elite. At the entrance of the bay stands the fortress of San Antonio, built on the spot where Amerigo Vespucci supposedly landed in 1501. The fort was erected to protect the Portuguese colonists from Dutch invaders.

Proceed to the Praça Municipal in the historic center, where Brazil's best-preserved colonial architecture is located. Leave your coach behind and proceed on a guided walk through the Upper City that includes an exterior visit of the Cathedral, formerly the chapel of the largest Jesuit seminary outside Rome. Continue on to the Church of São Francisco. Due to renovations taking place, your visit will be exterior only. Next, a slight downhill walk will take you to one of the city's oldest squares. Formerly the site of the slave market, a pillory still marks the spot where slaves once were publicly punished. The square's appearance hasn't changed much since the 18th century.

Rejoining your coach, your tour will continue with a sightseeing drive, passing by Victoria district and residential areas to the Mercado Modelo. Visit to the Mercado Modelo, which offers you an opportunity to stroll through several stalls with countless souvenirs of African as well as Brazilian origin.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2-hours of walking, mostly over cobblestone surfaces and there is a steep downhill to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and is not considered suitable for those with mobility concerns. Due to the heat and lack of air-conditioning at the sites, light-weight clothing is recommended along with sun caps; sunglasses and flat, comfortable walking shoes. For all Sunday calls, the Mercado Modelo will not be visited. The drive through Victoria District during the sightseeing portion depends on traffic conditions and route chosen that day.

  • Panoramic Salvador

See the highlights and landmarks of Salvador, Brazil’s third largest city, including its historical churches, vibrant neighborhoods, and largest handicraft market.

Depart from the pier and begin driving along the picturesque shoreline of Salvador, the first colonial capital of Brazil and one of the oldest cities in the Americas. After approximately ninety minutes, you will arrive at Sacred Hill, atop which sits the 18th-century Bonfim (meaning “good ending”) Church, a pilgrimage site because of its reputation for granting miracles. Be sure to notice that parts of the façade are covered with Portuguese majolica earthenware.

Continuing on, you will be treated to a panoramic view of the artificial lagoon in Dique do Tororo Park. The eight enormous sculptures of deities floating on the water’s surface are a rather unexpected and enthralling sight. More revealing aspects of Salvador will be seen driving through the bohemian beach district of Rio Vermelho and the beautiful Ondina district. Eventually, you will stop for photos at the imposing Farol da Barra lighthouse, built on top of a 16th-century fortification that is now a museum.

Then, after admiring a sweeping view of All Saints Bay, it’s on to Mercado Modelo. This sprawling marketplace offers more than 250 shops, most of them filled with arts and crafts that are characteristic of the region. You will have approximately fifty minutes of free time here in which to browse the shops. Some of the items available here are lacework, jewelry, leather goods, paintings and religious objects, some relating to Catholicism, others to the Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomblé. Following your market stop, you will rejoin your coach and return to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 30 minutes of walking, plus any additional walking at the guests’ discretion during free time at the market. There will be some cobblestone surfaces to negotiate. The tour is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing (shorts and mini-skirts/dresses are not permitted in churches); sun cap; sunglasses; and flat comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The cathedral and Mercado Modelo are closed on Sundays and other venues will be substituted.
