Rivaling Madrid or Paris for sophistication and culture, the tree-lined boulevards of fashionable Buenos Aires are home to superb restaurants, art galleries, museums, the magnificent Teatro de Colon and the brightly colored houses of La Boca barrio. As the sun sets, Recoleta awakens and the passionate melodies of the tango rise from the milangas along San Telmo’s cobbled streets. Few cities in South America share the ambiance, lifestyle and amenities that make Buenos Aires so endearing.

  • Tango Show

In the late 19th century, Buenos Aires was becoming an immigrant city, where frustrated and melancholic Europeans displaced gaucho rustics, who in turn retreated gradually to the ever more distant countryside. Permeated with nostalgia over a disappearing way of life, the tango show expressed the apprehensions and anxieties of individuals, ranging from pastimes like horse racing and other popular diversions to deeper feelings towards the changing landscape of the neighborhood and community, the figure of the mother, betrayal by women, friendship or other important personal concerns. During this time, enjoy the opportunity to admire all qualities of tango in its different enchanting expressions.

  • San Telmo Antique Stores & Pallarol's Silversmiths

This delightful half-day tour takes you to one of Buenos Aires' most colorful areas, the bohemian San Telmo neighborhood, as well as giving you the opportunity to discover the work of the best-known Argentinian silversmith.

Situated midway between the bustling downtown and port areas of La Boca, San Telmo was formerly inhabited by many aristocratic families of Buenos Aires during the 19th century. With the outbreak of yellow fever in 1871, the wealthy moved northward, leaving behind opulent mansions that were converted into tenements and occupied by immigrant families known as conventillos. As a result of renewed urban planning and government subsidies in the 1970's, renovations began on the conventillos. Today, the worn sidewalks and crumbling structures have been transformed into quaint streets lined with antique shops, galleries, chic restaurants and traditional tango halls.

Disembarking the ship, your coach will be waiting at the pier to transfer you to charming San Telmo. Upon arrival, you'll commence a short walking tour of the area, viewing the area's rich historical architecture and absorbing its vibrant atmosphere. There will be some time afforded to browse for treasures in the many antique shops before it's time to continue on to Plaza Dorrego, which is filled with bars, restaurants and is the site of the San Telmo Antique Fair on Sundays. A stop will also be made at the nearby church of San Pedro Telmo, which exhibits a beautiful blend of colonial, baroque, neoclassical and Italianate architecture.

Following your time at the church, you'll return to Plaza Dorrego and pay a visit to the renowned Pallarol's Silversmiths. Here, you'll have a rare opportunity to witness first-hand the work of 250 years of family tradition. Few things have changed from the times of Vicente, the first silversmith in this family in 18th-century Barcelona. Presently, Juan Carlos Pallarols lives in the neighborhood of San Telmo, where he has his workshop, his store and a small family museum. Due to his active participation on behalf of the Argentine culture, he received the Distinguished Citizen Award by the Council of the City of Buenos Aires on June 19, 1996. After a memorable visit to Pallarol's workshop, you'll rejoin your coach and return to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 hours of walking and/or standing - at times on uneven and cobblestone surfaces. Therefore, this tour is not considered suitable for guests who utilize a wheelchair or those with mobility concerns. Caps and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The order of sights visited may vary.

  • Highlights of Buenos Aires

Enjoy an enlightening overview of Buenos Aires by visiting landmarks ranging from its most politically important square to its most characteristic neighborhoods.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at Plaza de Mayo, arguably the most famous square in Argentina. Its name refers to the revolution that began nearby in May 1810 and led to Argentina’s independence from Spain.

Some of the surrounding buildings are just as celebrated. President Juan Peron and his wife Eva, more affectionately known as Evita, delivered numerous speeches from the balcony of Casa Rosado, the executive mansion. You will also see the glorious Metropolitan Cathedral, which is adorned with frescoes and elaborate artwork.

Then, it’s on to the neighborhood La Boca to view El Caminito, a street that is an open-air museum of sorts full of brightly colored buildings. Some claim the tango originated here around 1870, and tango dancers are often seen performing impromptu in the streets.

While La Boca is a working class neighborhood, Barrio Norte is the most affluent. That becomes immediately apparent as you drive through it on the way to Recoleta Cemetery, the final resting place for Argentina’s wealthy and powerful. It holds thousands of grandiose mausoleums containing the remains of generals, sports figures and most famously Evita.

Later, on the way back to the pier, you will drive through leafy Palermo, the city’s largest neighborhood. Depending on the route, you may pass the zoo and botanical garden, while enjoying a candid look at daily life in Buenos Aires.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 90 minutes of easy to moderate walking/standing that includes some steps and uneven cobblestone surfaces.
