Costa Maya is the closest port of access to many of the lesser known Mayan ruins in the Yucatan including Chacchoben and Kohunlich. These sites are substantially less excavated than the better known pyramids near Cancun. The Mexican government is trying to improve the standard of living for the Indian population. The path chosen to do this in the Costa Maya area is to develop small-scale ecological based tourism destinations, including natural reserve parks.

  • Kohunlich and Dzibanche Ruins Combo

Explore two excavated Maya ruins in the dense jungle near the border of Belize, both of them archaeologically significant for their ingeniously designed temples.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a relaxing and spectacularly scenic drive through the tropical jungle and on a former Maya city. British physician and amateur archaeologist Thomas Gann discovered the city in the 1920s and named it Dzibanche (Mayan for “writing on wood”) for the wooden lintels in one of the temples. Those still-functioning lintels over the doorways only touch on the site’s architectural highlights.

While browsing the ruins, you may see ancient plazas, public buildings, stairways adorned with hieroglyphics and the magnificent Temple of the Owls, which features an internal burial chamber with owl-shaped pottery. You might also climb the soaring Temple of the Cormorants to enjoy a sweeping view of Dzibanche. The city is believed to have been the seat of the Kan or “snake” dynasty that ruled this area beginning in the 6th century.

You will also explore the nearby Maya city of Kohunlich, which was built around the same time. Its most dominant feature is the Temple of the Masks, a structure that honors the sun god with huge stone masks on the stairways. According to archaeologists, the buildings in Kohunlich would have been stuccoed, painted red and decorated with geometric designs.

After a visit of just over an hour, you will rejoin your coach and make your way to the Lagoon Club for a tasty lunch of regional favorites before returning to the pier.

Before departing for Costa Maya, you may also have time for a leisurely walk through the jungle, where you may spot toucans and monkeys.

Depart the pier for the brief transfer through the town of Mahahual to the eco-friendly dive center. Upon arrival, you will be outfitted with scuba gear and given an introductory scuba diving lesson. You will then embark a dive boat, and ride to shallow waters to practice your newly-acquired skills. Once comfortable, you will progress from the shallows to one of our many beautiful dive sites and take a guided tour of the Meso-American Barrier Reef. The area of the reef you will visit is renowned for its healthy and pristine coral, and breathtaking reef formations that form massive ledges and swim-throughs. Common marine life experienced on these dives include turtles, lobsters, stingrays, eels, king crabs, barracuda, and dolphin, as well as a variety of tropical reef fish that include damsels, butterfly fish, pork fish, parrot fish, schools of Creole wrasse and blue tangs.

At the conclusion of your dive, you will opt to return to the ship, or stay and experience the local culture and beautiful beaches of Mahahual. Once a fishing village, Mahahual is now a small town thriving with wonderful beachfront shops, restaurants, bars, arts and crafts booths, and more. Whether you are interested in diving, shopping, dining, water sport activities or a relaxing massage on the beach, you will find it in Mahahual. If you choose to stay in Mahahual after the dive excursion, you will be responsible for your own transportation back to the ship, so please be aware of the all-aboard ship time.
