A Walk in the Clouds
Duration: 5 3/4 hours
Tour Code: PNT-012
Follow a naturalist through a tropical cloud forest and across suspended bridges high above the jungle floor, where the views will be spectacular.
After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a scenic drive inland of just under 2 hours, en route to San Luis Park. During your drive, you will notice that the land becomes even more verdant as you approach the mountains. Upon arriving at the park, you will first walk down a short trail to a hummingbird garden. Dozens of species of these typically iridescent birds call Costa Rica home, and there is no telling which ones you will see.
Following this delightful introduction to Costa Rica’s avians and the chance to stretch your legs, you will begin a more adventurous walk into the higher reaches of the cloud forest. The views will be simply spectacular, and accompanied by your naturalist guide, you will follow a winding trail over rivers and across suspended bridges that hang more than 10 stories above the ground. The foliage will be jungle-like, wildly exotic and often punctuated with bursts of bright color from orchids, bromeliads and heliconias.
The cloud forest is also home to a variety of larger tropical birds. You might see Resplendent Quetzals, Scarlet Macaws and Keel-Billed Toucans. Also, look for monkeys swinging from tree to tree and even sloths, which move so slowly they almost blend into the surroundings.
Following your walk, you will snack on corn tortillas and cheese, accompanied by “agua dulce,” a hot drink sweetened with raw cane sugar. You will then return to the pier, perhaps stopping briefly at El Jardin to shop.
