Puntarenas, Costa Rica-port

Puntarenas, which means "Sandy Point" in Spanish, is the capital and main city in the province Puntarenas, Costa Rica, at the Pacific coast. The oddly-shaped province has its largest section in the South, far from the capital. A mountainous country, Costa Rica ranges from sea level to peaks as high as 13,000 feet and a succession of white, sandy beaches follow one another along the Pacific Coast. The country was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1502.

A Walk in the Clouds

Most Active or Strenuous

Duration: 5 3/4 hours

Tour Code: PNT-012

Follow a naturalist through a tropical cloud forest and across suspended bridges high above the jungle floor, where the views will be spectacular.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a scenic drive inland of just under 2 hours, en route to San Luis Park. During your drive, you will notice that the land becomes even more verdant as you approach the mountains. Upon arriving at the park, you will first walk down a short trail to a hummingbird garden. Dozens of species of these typically iridescent birds call Costa Rica home, and there is no telling which ones you will see.

Following this delightful introduction to Costa Rica’s avians and the chance to stretch your legs, you will begin a more adventurous walk into the higher reaches of the cloud forest. The views will be simply spectacular, and accompanied by your naturalist guide, you will follow a winding trail over rivers and across suspended bridges that hang more than 10 stories above the ground. The foliage will be jungle-like, wildly exotic and often punctuated with bursts of bright color from orchids, bromeliads and heliconias.

The cloud forest is also home to a variety of larger tropical birds. You might see Resplendent Quetzals, Scarlet Macaws and Keel-Billed Toucans. Also, look for monkeys swinging from tree to tree and even sloths, which move so slowly they almost blend into the surroundings.

Following your walk, you will snack on corn tortillas and cheese, accompanied by “agua dulce,” a hot drink sweetened with raw cane sugar. You will then return to the pier, perhaps stopping briefly at El Jardin to shop.

Please note: this tour includes approximately 90 minutes of moderate to strenuous walking that includes inclines, steps, uneven and gravel surfaces. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests, pregnant women, or those with mobility concerns and is not recommended for those who suffer from a fear of heights. Participants should be in good physical condition. Clothing should include: long pants; a jacket and rain poncho; sun cap; sunglasses; sunscreen; and flat, comfortable closed-toe athletic shoes or hiking boots are recommended. Minimum age to participate is 8 years old. Please do not touch or feed any animals. Wildlife sightings while likely, are not guaranteed.
