Highlight of the Golden Circle Route

Haukadalur Valley

Your Next Unforgettable Adventure

Disembarking from Seven Seas Grandeur® in Reykjavik after a breathtaking 10-night sailing around Iceland felt like stepping out of a dream. Cruising around this mystical island was more than just a vacation — it was a revelation.

My biggest takeaway? Exploring Iceland from a cruise ship is hands down the best way to see the island. The ship glides in and out of fjords, offering panoramic views of dramatic cliffs, cascading waterfalls and remote villages. There’s truly no better way to take in the scenery than from a Regent ship, cocktail in hand, relaxing in the Observation Lounge as the sun dips below the horizon. Whale watching from the deck added a magical touch, with nature’s show unfolding right before our eyes.

Extending the Adventure

Back in Reykjavik, one more adventure awaited: visiting the Haukadalur Valley, home to Iceland’s famous geysers, and the nearby Gullfoss waterfall.

There are several ways to reach Haukadalur. Regent offers pre- and post-cruise land programs that include this iconic destination. If Reykjavik is a port of call during your cruise, shore excursions are available. Alternatively, staying a few days post-cruise and renting a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, which is exactly what we did.

Journey into the Valley

After a scenic 90-minute drive through Iceland’s rugged landscape, we arrived early in the morning to beat the crowds. The visitor center was our starting point, and from there, a short walk led us into a surreal world where the earth seemed to breathe. Bubbling mud pots, steaming vents and vibrant blue mineral deposits painted the landscape in hues of rust, emerald and ivory. It felt like stepping into the Icelandic version of Yellowstone.

As we wandered through this geothermal wonderland, Strokkur Geysir erupted unexpectedly right before our eyes, an awe-inspiring burst of boiling water shooting 15 to 20 meters (49 to 66 feet) into the air. Strokkur erupts every 5 to 10 minutes, making it one of the most reliable geysers in the world. Nearby, the original Geysir, from which all geysers get their name, is currently dormant, with eruptions being rare and unpredictable. Little Geysir, however, bubbles continuously, adding to the valley’s dynamic energy.

View from Above

A short but steep hike led us to a viewpoint overlooking the entire valley. The effort was well worth it. From above, the landscape unfolded like a living canvas, steam rising from the earth, geysers punctuating the terrain and the distant mountains framing all of the view.

To sail to Iceland is to witness nature at its most elemental and nowhere is that more profound than along the Golden Circle, where thundering waterfalls, ancient tectonic landscapes and erupting Geysir remind you just how alive the Earth truly is. It’s not simply a destination, but an essential journey — especially when you experience it aboard a Regent ship.
