Odessa Catacombs
Duration: 3 1/2 hours
Tour Code: ODS-002
Explore the historic and strategic significance of Odessa's catacombs during a memorable visit to this amazing underground labyrinth.
Depart the pier for a drive by coach through the scenic Odessa countryside, passing small villages, farms, and gardens en route to Nerubaiskoe, an historic village first settled by Ukrainian Cossacks as a fortress. Upon arrival, you will begin the walking tour by entering the underground interior of the famed catacombs; a labyrinth stretching an impressive 1,640-feet below ground. The catacombs were first created to provide the city with limestone, but were also used as an underground fort by the Soviet army during World War II. You will visit the World War II command post, and learn about the defense of the catacombs at a local museum.
Return to Odessa to continue your tour at Shevchenko Park. In the park you will walk along Alley of Glory to view the Unknown Sailor Memorial and the eternal flame to those who fell, defending Odessa - the hero-city during the World War II.
Following your tour, you will re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier.
