Explore Iceland's historical, cultural and geological influences on present-day life during this scenic tour of Reykjavik which allows participants the opportunity to hear tales of Viking settlers, learn the basics of geothermal energy, observe a little of Iceland's geological phenomena and view its varied landscapes.

Reykjavik's capital area consists of seven municipalities with approximately 200,000 inhabitants. With plenty of space, clean air and natural green energy, it is renowned as one of the most modern, forward-thinking European societies. The city's logo is Pure Energy, and pure energy is central to Reykjavik's heating, nightlife and culture.

After departing from the pier, you will pass Reykjavik’s main sports and recreation facilities in the idyllic Laugardalur valley and then continue to Bessastadir Peninsula. Settlers took up residence here in the first millennium A.D. and the site has been occupied ever since. The president of Iceland now lives on Bessastadir in a handsome estate that was once a farm.

Returning to the inner city, you will view the open-air museum at Arbaer. More than 20 traditional buildings have been relocated to the site to form a historical town square, village and farm. Then, after crossing the crystalline Ellida River, you will stop at the Pearl, a glittering dome that houses the Viking Saga Museum and several massive tanks that store hot geothermal water for the Reykjavik’s residents. The views from atop the hill are spectacular in every direction.

Another photo stop will be made at majestic Hallgrimskirkja Church, whose iconic tower has become a landmark. Then, it’s on to Reykjavik’s old quarter, the esteemed University of Iceland, and Tjornin, a serene lake in the center of town. Returning to the pier, you will pause for photos at Hofdi, a stately house often visited by heads of state such as Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, who held a summit there in 1986.
