SPIRITUAL SHORES
KO SAMUI, THAILAND
A visit to temples on Ko Samui will give
you a glimpse of real Thailand, and you
have plenty to choose from. Ko Samui’s
most important is Wat Phra Yai with its
11m-tall golden Buddha statue perched
atop a wide staircase decorated with
dragons. For a more serene spiritual
experience, join locals at the Plai Laem
temple, with its towering white statue of
Guanyin, a goddess who is believed to be
the protector of all beings and a source
of unconditional love. On either side of the
Guanyin statue, you will find two halls that
are adorned with murals and frescoes that
depict Buddhist mythology.
