— CHIOS —
THE FANTASTIC “MASTIC ISLAND”
Chios is a stunningly beautiful Greek island with a unique character all
its own. The sightseeing is spectacular with medieval castles, unusual
cave formations and pristine beaches all waiting to be explored. Other
stimulating sites to visit include the four windmills at Tampakika,
Daskalopetra (Homer’s rock) and the beautiful 11th-century Nea Moni
Monastery, which has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Even with so many intriguing points of interest, it’s easy to hit them all.
The small, kidney shaped island stretches only 31 miles from north to
south, so you can quickly get anywhere you’d like to go.
In recent years, Chios’ popularity as a traveler’s destination has grown
significantly, however tourism is not the island’s main claim to fame.
Chios is best known for its production and trade of mastic, a natural resin
harvested from the Pistacia lentiscus tree. This highly valuable cash crop
is commonly used as an ingredient in chewing gum and as a flavoring in
food. Mastic is also used to make liqueur, varnish, essential oil, cosmetics
and has a been used in medicine throughout history to treat a wide
variety of ailments, from high blood pressure to stomach ulcers.
Harvesting mastic is a tedious and labor-intensive process that occurs
only once a year. It involves slicing the trunk of the tree at the correct
time and carefully collecting the sticky, pine-scented sap that oozes
out and eventually dries into crystalized resin droplets. Each piece of
mastic must then be sorted, thoroughly washed and packaged for sale.
Mastic production is the backbone of the local economy and the
Chios Gum Mastic Growers Association has exclusive control over
all manufacturing and global distribution. Even though mastic trees
are commonly found all throughout the Mediterranean, there is only
one variety of this evergreen that produces the precious natural resin
in commercially viable amounts and this very special tree is found
only in southern Chios. It is no wonder that Chios has been given the
nickname the “Mastic Island.”
