3 | HARDANGERFJORD
Spanning 111 miles from the sea through the ubiquitous
mountain terrain to the Hardangervidda mountain plateau
in the middle of the country, Hardangerfjord is Norway’s
second longest fjord and the fourth longest in the world. This
breathtaking natural wonder is considered a national icon and
has earned the name Queen of the Fjords.
As you make your way to Hardangerfjord, you may pass
several notable landmarks including the Fortress of Bergenhus,
King Hakon’s Hall and the Rosenkrantz Tower before
crossing Fusafjord by ferry and taking in the gorgeous views
across Bjørnefjord.
When you arrive at Hardangerfjord, the dramatic contrast of the
wild elements come together in perfect harmony to captivate
your senses in a way that only Mother Nature can. Along the
hillsides, near the fjord, you will find a surprising number of
apple orchards and fruit trees which account for roughly 40%
of Norway’s fruit production and add an especially charming
highlight to an already spectacular landscape.
Make sure to stop at Steinsdal waterfall where you can walk
behind 150 feet of cascading waters without getting wet, then
ascend the Tokagjel Gorge through a series of tunnels to reach
the Kvamskogen mountain plateau. On a clear day, you may be
able to catch a glimpse of the gigantic Folgefonna Glacier in
the distance as you travel the winding mountain roads.
Few places on earth are able to demonstrate the untouched
beauty and raw power of nature as aptly as the fjords in
Norway. The size and scale of your surroundings is nothing
short of surreal as you traverse the waters where the Vikings
once sailed. Regardless of where you choose to explore, you’re
sure to depart with cherished memories and photographs that
will last a lifetime.
