THINGVELLIR
— A NA TURAL HIS TORY —
Traveling to Reykjavik invariably means visiting the Golden
Circle, a trio of stunning locations in southwest Iceland. Of the
three, Thingvellir National Park epitomizes the history of Iceland
and the Icelandic nation. Its breathtaking landscape sits in a
rift valley caused by the separation of the Eurasian and North
American tectonic plates.
In 930 A.D, descendants of Iceland’s original settlers decided
they needed a form of collective government and began
sending groups to the area to represent them. This gathering
place was eventually deemed ‘the fields of parliament’, which
translates to Thingvellir.
These historic roots led to it being declared a National Park
in 1930 — 1,000 years after the parliament first met — and a
UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
