Snap photos of polar bears in their natural habitats as close as humanly possible and trek into the tundra to view other iconic Arctic animals such as moose, fox, black bears, wolves, seabirds, and beluga whales, while relaxing at a rustic yet well-appointed ecolodge between photo safaris.
This trip has been designed with a strong focus on providing an unparalleled opportunity for capturing ground-level images of polar bears in their natural habitat. At Churchill Wild, they understand your passion for photography and have curated this experience that gives you the best possible chance to capture those once-in-a-lifetime shots.
Highlights of this program include:
•Daily, guided hikes across the tundra to view polar bears and other Arctic wildlife, up-close-and-personal, in their natural habitat.
•Indulging your taste buds with tundra-inspired cuisine, complemented by select Canadian wines.
•Educational evening presentations by the lodge managers or naturalist guides about the Arctic ecosystems, landscape, and lifestyle.
•Travelling further afield on a half or full-day ATV tour. The low-impact tundra vehicles give you access to areas up and down the coast.
•Viewing beluga whales near the mouth of the Seal River estuary where they congregate by the thousands in the summer months.
Special Notes:
Due to the adventurous nature of this program and the amount of walking over uneven terrain, we do not recommend it for guests with walking difficulties of for those who use a wheelchair or scooter. Guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read the airline stipulations below with regards to bringing this equipment on the tour. This program is not exclusive to RSSC – there will be guests who are not sailing with us also on the program.
Due to the nature of this program, cancellations made within 120 days or less prior to the sail date are subject to 100% cancellation penalty. There are no refunds for unused portions of any program. Guests failing to arrive on Day 1 of a scheduled land program will be considered no-shows and their program space released. Full payment is required to confirm this program.
Please see further below for packing instructions – duffel bags are required.
This program begins in Winnipeg, Canada and ends in Vancouver, Canada where guests will board the ship. The internal flight between Winnipeg and Vancouver is included in the cost of this program and will be booked by RSSC’s air team.
DAY 1 – July 16, 2024
Upon arriving at Winnipeg’s Richardson International Airport (YWG), you will proceed through Customs and Immigration for international flights, collect your luggage and transfer to the hotel, which is directly across the street from the arrival’s terminal. There will be no meet and greet.
After checking in, the remainder of the day will be mostly at your leisure, allowing you time to settle in and perhaps explore Winnipeg on your own. The only scheduled event will be an orientation dinner that a Churchill Wild representative will host. Further details on where to meet for the dinner will be provided in a Welcome Letter received when you check in.
Please separate any luggage that will not accompany you on the safari. It will be stored until your return on Day 7. Make sure to take any medications and documentation such as passports with you to the lodge. Also make sure that all luggage left behind has sufficient identification.
DAY 2 – July 17, 2024
A deluxe continental breakfast will be served from 5-5:30am and then meet the Churchill Wild team in the lobby before walking back to the airport to check in for a flight to Churchill. Your representative will ensure all luggage requirements are met, will walk with the group through the security and to the gate and will stay until the group departs.
In Churchill you will be met by one of Churchill Wild’s expert staff who will provide more details on your light aircraft transfer to the lodge. Your adventure begins with an aerial flight over the winding Hudson Bay coast en-route to your home for the next six days, Seal River Heritage Lodge.
The flight will take you over the winding Hudson Bay coast, where you may see pods of whales, birds, and polar bears out on the ice. The Seal River Estuary is a favorite summer habitat for these bears, and they are regularly seen swimming or basking near the water’s edge.
Upon arriving at Seal River Heritage Lodge, your hosts will provide a tour and get you settled into your room. Perched on the rugged coast of Hudson Bay, Seal River Heritage Lodge is one of the early members in the National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World collection. It is a prime location for observing polar bears as they wander the coast during summer and fall waiting for the bay to freeze.
The stars of the safaris at Churchill Wild are the polar bears but they are just the tip of the wildlife iceberg. Black bears, wolves, colored and Arctic fox, Arctic hare, moose, and beluga whales are also commonly seen.
The fenced-in compound, viewing platforms and tower lend themselves to unique photography opportunities for northern lights and the wildlife that approach to check out the sights, sounds and smells of the lodge.
After each day of trekking the tundra, you can relax in the cozy lounge, watching for wildlife through expansive picture windows, sharing photos and talking with new friends. The lodge also includes a library, gift shop, 24-hr electricity via solar power, natural gas and wood heat, radio, telephone, and satellite wi-fi.
Rooms at the lodge are rustic not luxurious, however, they combine the charm of nature with the comfort of modern amenities. Appointments include arctic throws that keep you cozy and warm, and eco-friendly toiletries (hair dryer, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and hand soap) and a welcome basket filled with local snacks.
A thorough orientation on travel in polar bear country will be provided prior to any outings and after a tundra-inspired lunch, you will experience the coast for the first time. Ensure your camera batteries are charged.
All wildlife approaches are done on foot with the exception of the whale watching which is done by boat. In some instances, the group may take ATV vehicles to the wildlife, but the approach will be on the ground. Morning and afternoon hikes or excursions can be anywhere from 1-3 hours, or the group may not even leave the compound if the wildlife is at the lodge.
Back at the lodge, enjoy an “appetizer hour” followed by a family-style meal that will include organic, locally sourced meats and fish along with fruits and vegetables from our Prairie Wild orchard and gardens. Meals are inspired by the tundra landscape and consist of comforting soups and stews, freshly baked rolls, tasty salads, show-stopper main courses and delicious desserts.
Evenings typically include an informative lecture or slide show presentation narrated by one of Churchill Wild’s knowledgeable guides or staff.
ETHICAL WILDLIFE VIEWING
Churchill Wild practices ethical wildlife viewing, meaning they do not do anything to interfere with the animal’s normal behavior or cause it stress. Practically speaking, this translates into a few key principles:
The majority of their wildlife viewing excursions are on foot which means the group can be quiet and less intrusive when approaching a polar bear or other animal. It also means leaving behind a very small footprint on the tundra and taiga across which you will trek.
You never want to make a polar bear feel trapped or encroached upon, so when our in the field, the group will keep a minimum distance of 100 meters (328 feet). This keeps both the group and the animal safe.
It is common for bears to wander past the lodge or even curl up for a nap outside the fenced compound. Once it is noticed that a bear is approaching, guests are reminded to move slowly and quietly around the lodge. The lodges are elevated off the ground, so footfalls can be quite noisy if not controlled, which can spook the bear. Sudden movements seen through the windows or within the compound can also be startling. Guests are also asked to turn off camera sounds while photographing out in the field.
Drones are not permitted.
Wildlife is never fed or coerced into certain behaviors with food. Feeding wildlife can lead to aggression or reliance on food provided by humans, which can be deadly.
Churchill Wild is deeply committed to being ecofriendly and leaving the coastline in its natural state. It employs a wide range of sustainability initiatives at the ecolodges and is always looking for ways to add to or improve on them. This includes things like relying on solar power and greywater recycling, using biodegradable cleaning products and toiletries, and strict waste management policies.
Churchill Wild wants guests to develop a deep appreciation for, and connection to, the wildlife and their habitat by sharing its knowledge of the area. In the field, guides will point out and interpret behaviors of polar bears and other wildlife, identify local plants, and speak to the geography and ecology of the region. Evening presentations provide more in-depth discussion on wildlife behavior, characteristics and the three distinct biomes of the area.
DAY 3, 4, 5, and 6 – July 18, 19, 20, 21, 2024
After breakfast, head out for either a marine tour or hike. Lunch will typically be back at the lodge, unless your guides take you on an ATV excursion further down the coast. Marine tours are tide-dependent, so scheduled mealtimes may be adjusted to accommodate whale watching.
Relive the excitement of the day during daily “appetizer hour” before sitting down to dinner, then top up your glass of wine and settle in for the evening’s presentation.
Bedtime is at your leisure. The lodge area is monitored all night so be prepared to have your sleep cut short by a nocturnal visit from a polar bear. You might also stay up for a dazzling display of the Northern Lights.
DAY 7 – July 22, 2024
After breakfast at the lodge, you will transfer back to Churchill by small light aircraft. Have your cameras ready for the return flight as it affords excellent opportunities for great aerial shots.
Back in Churchill, you will spend the day with a tour guide exploring the town and surrounding area, learning about its rich history as a seaport and ex-military base. Stops may include the Parks Canada exhibit, the Itsanitaq Museum, and the Polar Bear Jail. Along the way, your guide will point out murals that were commissioned in 2016 as part of the SeaWalls mural festival. Before a group dinner, you will enjoy free time to shop.
Your flight south to Winnipeg will take place in the evening. Upon arrival, you will collect your bags, head out of the arrival’s doors and back to The Grand Hotel for an overnight. Please be sure to collect any bags left in storage.
DAY 8 – July 23, 2024
Following breakfast at the hotel, you will fly to Vancouver. Please refer to the flight details that will be provided by the RSSC Air department and make your way back to the departure’s terminal in plenty of time for your flight.
Upon arrival in Vancouver, the group will be met after luggage claim in the arrival’s hall by our local ground operator. Look for a representative holding a sign with the Regent Seven Seas logo.
You will be transferred to your hotel for the evening. After check in, the remainder of the day will be at your leisure to relax or explore Vancouver on your own. Lunch and dinner will be on your own.
If flight delays are encountered while enroute, guests should proceed to the airline counter for updates. Downloading the free airline app will also keep guests current of any changes and in the event of a cancellation or delay, the airline will notify them, via the app, of their new schedule.
Should guests have any questions pertaining to the internal air segment on this program, please call RSSC at 1.844.519.9613 (weekdays: 8:30 am - 8:00 pm EST, Saturday:9:30 am - 5:30 pm EST, Sunday: closed). Dial 7 if after regular business hours.
DAY 9 – July 24, 2024
After breakfast and check out, the group will be met and transferred to the port, where you will embark the ship.
NOTE: There will be another RSSC group staying at the same hotel that will also transfer to the pier by coach; however, a private transfer has been arranged for this small safari group. Experience the true Alaska by traveling through the pristine countryside by rail, driving through Denali National Park, and exploring intriguing inland cities, often on your own so you’re free to see whatever you wish. This program features Denali National Park, antique automobiles, sled dog champions, and up- close wildlife viewing opportunities.
*This program ends in Fairbanks, Alaska therefore all flights must depart from Fairbanks International Airport (FAI)
Day 1
Upon disembarking the ship in Seward, the Tour Director will join you for the journey through Alaska’s interior during the next five days. Driving toward Anchorage, you will pass through a landscape so spectacular it holds three scenic designations: USDA Forest Service Scenic Byway, Alaska Scenic Byway, and All-American Road. Make a stop at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center to see indigenous animals to Alaska in their natural habitat.
In Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, you will enjoy a brief orientation tour that will present some of the highlights and suggestions for lunch on your own in the downtown.
Following lunch, you will depart for Talkeetna, the quaint Alaskan town that provided the inspiration for the 1990s TV program “Northern Exposure.” It nestles at the confluence of three rivers: the Talkeetna, Chulitna, and Susitna.
After checking in at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, you will attend an exclusive reception so you can get to know your travel companions. The evening is open for dinner on your own and to explore Talkeetna.
Although known for its restaurants, brewery and fine shopping, Talkeenta also offers extraordinary views of Mt. McKinley, weather permitting. The highest peak in North America, Mt. Denali can usually be photographed from several locales around town, including the back deck of the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge or similar, where you will spend the evening. Dinner is on your own.
Day 2
After breakfast at the lodge, board your Deluxe Dome Railcar for the journey to Denali National Park. Seating is upstairs in the dome, which offers incredible views of Alaska’s stunning natural beauty from all sides of the railcar. Lunch is included today onboard the train. The remainder of your day is open for optional activities, such as helicopter flightseeing over Mt. Denali, fly fishing, and whitewater rafting on the Nenana River. The prices for each activity vary. These programs can only be booked at the lodge and are independently operated with no affiliation to the cruise line.
After dinner on your own, you will spend the evening at the Grande Denali Lodge or similar.
Day 3
The day starts with an early breakfast at the lodge and then the phenomenal Denali Natural History Tour. Focusing on the rich natural and cultural history of the park, this program includes several interpretive stops and an hour off-bus experience.
Begin with a stop to learn about the creation of the Denali Park Road with the film “Across Time and Tundra.” Next visit Savage Cabin, the original ranger’s cabin, provides a living history into how the cabin was once used and how it continues to be used today.
Finally, you will make a stop at Primrose Ridge to experience a memorable Alaska Native presentation that will enlighten you with how the land has been used for nearly 10,000 years. All along the way your naturalist driver-guide will provide a great introduction to the landscape, geology, and history of Denali National Park and Preserve. Tours are conducted in school busses.
NOTE: due to a massive landslide and subsequent damage to certain roadways in the park, there may not be an opportunity to upgrade to the Tundra Wilderness Tour depending on how far along the Park is with reconstruction on the roadways. Your Tour Director will be able to provide more information while you are on the tour.
This afternoon, board a deluxe motor coach and depart for Fairbanks.
Upon arriving in Fairbanks, you will transfer to the Pikes Waterfront Hotel or similar, your hotel for the next two nights. Dinner is on your own.
DAY 4
After breakfast at the lodge, you will begin touring Fairbanks, where you will learn of its rich Gold Rush history. A stop will be made at Trail Breaker Kennels to meet the canine athletes that run some of the biggest dog sled races in the world. Located along the Chena River in Fairbanks, Alaska, Trail Breaker Kennel was established in 1980 by the husband and wife team of David Monson (Yukon Quest champion) and Susan Butcher (four-time Iditarod champion). Both were avid mushers and longed to fulfill their dream of mushing full-time and raising a family. In 1993, David and Susan decided to share their love of sled dogs with the public.
Trail Breaker Kennel is now one of the longest operating kennels in Fairbanks where visitors experience and enjoy an Alaskan mushing lifestyle. During the winter months, the Alaskan huskies train for and participate in sled dog races around Alaska. In the summer, the dogs take a break from racing and enjoy short training runs around the lake, swimming in the river, and interacting with visitors from around the world.
Following an included lunch at a restaurant in Fairbanks, you will get to spend time this afternoon at the Fountainhead Antique Auto Collection. This hidden gem rivals most collections found around the world and displays American-made antique automobiles and vintage clothing from Alaska’s post-Gold Rush era. Highlights include early steam, electric and hybrid cars, America’s first V16-powered automobile, and midget racecars. All automobiles in this collection are operational.
The remainder of the day is free for dinner on your own and other optional activities.
Day 5
Following breakfast at the lodge, you will transfer to the Fairbanks International Airport for your flight home.

Day 1
After disembarking the ship in Seward, you will meet your tour director and begin driving to Girdwood. The road passes through some of America’s most spectacular scenery and holds three scenic designations: USDA Forest Service Scenic Byway, Alaska Scenic Byway, and All-American Road. On the way, enjoy a stop at an organization dedicated to preserving Alaska’s wildlife. The center is a home and a refuge for many animals; bear, moose, elk, and other wildlife that call Alaska home.
Upon arriving at the Hotel Alyeska or similar, and checking in, you may wish to enjoy a ride to the top of Mt. Alyeska on the aerial tramway for a spectacular view of the surrounding area with its seven glaciers. (not included). The rest of the day and evening are to enjoy as you please. Meals are on your own.
Day 2
After breakfast at the hotel, begin your 4-hour scenic tour from Girdwood to Denali via the George Parks Highway, which winds through the kind of scenery that defines the Alaskan interior: tundra, soaring mountain peaks, glaciers, forests, wild rivers, and vast expanses primarily inhabited by animals such as moose, grizzlies, foxes and birds.
In time, you will visit an Iditarod Sled Dog Kennel and learn about this truly Alaskan competition. Note: this is not a ride with the dogs. Traveling from Anchorage to Nome on the Bering Sea coast, each Iditarod team of 12 to 16 dogs and their musher cover 1,150 miles of Alaska’s most rugged terrain in 10 to 17 days. Add temperatures well below zero, scouring winds, and long hours of darkness, and it is no wonder that the Iditarod is called the last Great Race on Earth.
Once you reach Denali, you will be transferred to the Grande Denali Lodge or similar, which perches on the edge of a bluff less than a mile from the entrance to Denali National Park.
Following an enlightening private lecture on Denali, your evening is free to enjoy dinner on-own and an overnight at the lodge.

The best available hotels and lodges in Alaska are used throughout the land program. They are comfortable and rustic. Guests accustomed to the level of services at an international five-star hotel will find that the same services are not available in Alaska. Due to peak season in Alaska from May through September, it may be difficult to change rooms during the hotel stay as all hotels have very high occupancy. Hotels are subject to change.

ADDITIONAL TOURING
While you are in the Denali area at the beginning of the tour program, your guide will present additional touring programs for sale. These tour options vary from week to week and therefore can’t be pre-purchased. However, your guide will do everything possible to help you secure space. Additional tours are not available to pre-purchase through RSSC.
BAGGAGE
As your baggage will travel on many different modes of transportation, please choose sturdy cases that have been properly tagged with personal identifications, both inside and out. It is important to keep all valuables and documents on your person. As amenities such as elevators and baggage handling are limited at some locations, we suggest you only carry one bag per person while on the land tour. Alternately, your tour director will collect any pieces that you do not want to take on and off the bus each day and it will be stored on the motor coach in a locked bay. Please pack accordingly and bring any medications and documents with you.
Alternatively, you may wish to contact Luggage Forward to make your own luggage transfer arrangements (at own cost) from the ship to your home -www.luggageforward.com

CLOTHING AND CLIMATE
With a broad variety of weather possibilities, we encourage you to bring clothes that are suited to layering. Daytime attire in Alaska is strictly casual. Comfortable, supportive walking shoes are a must. The following items should be included: water-repellant coat or jacket, collapsible umbrella, rain hat, lightweight windbreaker, and sweaters. It could be warmer inland with summer temperatures in Denali reaching 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
ALTITUDE
Travel in Alaska is generally at lower elevations. The maximum altitude is 2,800 feet in Denali National Park.
WEATHER CONDITIONS
Weather conditions are unpredictable. While the cruise line and its appointed ground operators will do everything possible to assist with alternative arrangements, we cannot be held responsible for any costs incurred if a land program, tour or private arrangement made through the cruise line is disrupted due to adverse weather.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The published itinerary is based on component suppliers expected to be operating for the land program. Changes to the availability of flights, flight and tour schedules or other itinerary components out of the cruise line’s control may require an adjustment to the final itinerary. The local ground operator will handle meal vouchers, train tickets, or tour tickets included in the program. The cruise line reserves the right to substitute hotels, if necessary.
Please note: Land programs that encompass multiple days ashore customarily include extensive and prolonged activity, while those of shorter durations typically have more moderate activity levels. However, each program varies, and participants should be prepared to negotiate a mixture of surfaces which may include inclines, cobblestones, sand, and gravel or natural paths. There may also be a need to climb steps or stairs on occasion. Guests who utilize a wheelchair and those with mobility concerns are advised to check with the cruise line in advance to see if any portion of the tour program may not be considered suitable for their individual situation. Weather appropriate clothing; hats; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are generally recommended.
Please note: All land programs are capacity controlled and subject to availability. Programs falling under the minimum number of required participants are subject to cancellation. Pricing listed is also subject to change to meet unexpected cost increases for transportation, land arrangements or currency fluctuations. Once purchased, pricing is guaranteed and not subject to change. Land Programs must be purchased no later than 60 days prior to your sail date. Cancellations made within 60 days or less prior to the sail date are subject to 100% cancellation penalty. There are no refunds for unused portions of any program.
Price: $2,499 per guest based on double occupancy.
Land program promotions are per person for guests 1 and 2 for one pre- or post-cruise program only, subject to terms.
