  • Located in southeastern France, today’s Marseille is a far cry from the sleepy villages it once inspired in Cézanne’s paintings. With more than a million people, the city remains the cosmopolitan and exuberant capital of southern Europe, with its picturesque Old Quarter, lively sidewalk cafes and shops, and Romanesque-Byzantine Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica, overlooking the steep cliffs and offering a bird’s eye view of the city’s colorful “quartiers” stretching down toward the sea.

As shore excursions to be offered in this port are not yet confirmed, below is a list of those offered previously. We make every effort to have excursions finalized at least 240 days in advance of sailing, and often sooner, so please check back regularly.

  • Chateauneuf-Du-Pape and Wine Tasting With Avignon

Sample an inspired selection of Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines and then tour the landmarks in Avignon, much of which has been deemed a World Heritage site.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a gorgeous drive through the Provençal countryside to the ancient village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhône Valley. Known for its namesake wines, the village is the ideal setting to sample a selection of full-bodied wines produced prominently with Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre grapes.

The tasting will take place at Maison Bouachon, a winery begun more than 100 years ago by a barrel-maker born in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Although the exact wines will be selected upon your arrival, you can expect to sample classics made with grapes that thrive in the vineyard’s unique terroir such as the signature La Tiare du Pape.

Following the tasting, you will proceed to Avignon for a three-course lunch at Auberge de la Treille and then tour the classic walled city. It was the seat of the papacy in the 14th century, and seven popes reigned from here. Tour highlights include the austere Palace of the Popes, which is one the largest Gothic buildings in Europe, and the remains of Saint Benezet’s Bridge, a series of stone arches that once spanned a bend in the Rhône River.

You will also have free time to explore further. You might meander the cobbled streets, shop for local lavender products, or simply absorb Avignon’s youthful, artistic energy before returning to the pier.

  • Aix-En-Provence Cheese and Wine

Savor a selection of Provence wines paired with locally produced cheeses in Aix-en-Provence, which you will explore with a guide and on your own.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a scenic drive through the Provençal countryside, a verdant patchwork of gentle foothills and bucolic valleys that stimulates the senses. Medieval towns are scattered about the landscape and none is more magnetic than Aix-en-Provence, where your walking tour begins on the Cours Mirabeau.

Shaded by 200-year-old plane trees, the wide boulevard is framed by cafés, bookshops and elegant mansions with wrought-iron balconies. Be sure to note the Mousse Fountain, which is fed by a natural thermal spring where the Romans bathed. Another landmark within fountain-blessed Aix-en-Provence is the Holy Savior Cathedral, which was built over the course of 10 centuries, leaving it with a number of different architectural styles.

In time, you will stop at La Fromagerie du Passage, a shop that sells extraordinary cheeses and wines. During the tasting that follows, you will sample a selection of wines matched with cheeses made with local ingredients and produced with traditional methods. It’s quite the experience and one you will not soon forget.

Free time follows, during which you can further explore charming Aix-en-Provence, the birthplace of Paul Cezanne. One option is to visit Cezanne’s studio, where he painted some of his largest and most ambitious works, including “The Woman with the Coffee Pot.” The tin coffee pot shown in the painting is still in the studio.

  • Marseilles City Highlights

Marseille offers so many intriguing diversions that there is little reason to venture farther. Driving through the colorful Old Port, where the city's Greek founders landed in 600 B.C., you will be mesmerized by the classically French sidewalk cafés, thriving markets, and picturesque fishing boats bobbing in the harbor.

As you travel along the coast, the landscape changes, and the views become dominated by the impressive cliffs of the Marseille massif and the scenic islands lying just offshore. Perched on La Garde Hill, high above the city, stands Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica, which upon visiting you'll learn was built on a site that has been a defensive observation post since prehistoric times. The architecture of the Romanesque-Byzantine style basilica boasts magnificent domes, multi-colored stone, and golden mosaics. After a drive through the shopping district, you will stop for photos at the Palais Longchamp, a fantastic 19th-Century complex of stately museums, elegant fountains, and an expansive Zoological Garden. The entrance to Longchamp Park is guarded by four stone lions, and provides an unforgettable setting for a photo. • Food & Wine Trails: the Wines & Gardens of Chateau Val Joanis

Regent Seven Seas Cruises is proud to partner with FOOD & WINE TRAILS, America’s foremost culinary travel company, in the offering of this tour. F&WT tours are always kept intimate and visit sites not typically offered by mainstream travel suppliers. Their tours are always led by a knowledgeable, English-speaking sommelier, wine or food expert, cooking instructor or chef, who enjoys introducing visitors to some of the best and most authentic food and wine of their region.

Your leisurely day in the Luberon region of Provence includes a tour, tasting, and authentic Provencal luncheon paired with the wines of the historic wine estate Château Val Joanis, as well as a visit of its remarkable gardens. You’ll also have time to soak up the atmosphere of the lovely town of Aix-en-Provence.

The Luberon is the setting of Peter Mayle’s acclaimed book A Year In Provence. Like the author, your guide grew up in the English-speaking world, but fell in love with Provence and has been calling it home for over twenty years. As a food and wine expert, she will spend the day introducing you to the picturesque landscapes, historic towns and typical foods and wines from one of the most beautiful regions in the world.

Just a short drive north of the town of Aix en Provence is Château Val Joanis, a 980-acre estate, where a 16th Century nobleman built himself a country manor. Four hundred years later, the Chancel family bought the property with dreams of making it even more splendid than it once was. As a result of their arduous labor of love, Val Joanis’ gardens won France’s Garden of the Year award in 2008 and since the first harvest in 1981 its wines have collected more awards than any other winery in the Luberon. In 2011, the property passed into the hands of a Dutch-German family, who made their fortune in horticulture, and under their care, Château Val Joanis continues to flourish.

You’ll tour the estate and enjoy a white wine aperitif tasting paired with estate grown olive oil. There will be time to stroll through the lovely gardens and visit their gourmet wine shop, too, as well as sitting down to a 3-course Provencal luncheon paired with three estate wines.

In the afternoon you’ll visit the enchanting ‘town of a thousand fountains,’ Aix en Provence, once home to the famous painter Cézanne. We offer you a one-hour walking tour through the old town, which still leaves you time on your own to stroll along the tree-lined avenues and quaint little lanes with gurgling fountains, or visit some of the tempting boutiques offering everything from designer wear to Provencal fabrics, artisan soaps, olive oils, perfumes and confectionery.

This tour is operated by the award winning culinary and wine tour specialist Food & Wine Trails.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 hours of walking plus any additional walking at the guests' discretion during free time. There are gravel paths and a stairway to the cellars at Val Joanis to negotiate. This tour is not suitable for wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. On occasion, due to last-minute operational issues at the wine estate, an alternate winery estate of similar quality and ranking may be substituted. Since a set meal is served on this excursion, guests with any dietary restrictions should advise the Destination Services Desk

  • Discover St. Remy de Provence

Discover the classic village of St.-Remy-de-Provence, the birthplace of Nostradamus and the magical setting for some of Vincent Van Gogh's most famous paintings.

Your tour commences with a drive inland toward the northern slopes of the Alpilles, a range of arid limestone mountains where the village of St. Remy nestles at the foot.

Reaching St. Remy, you'll set-off on a forty-five minute guided walking tour down its winding cobbled streets that are shaded by centuries-old plane trees. Along your route, you'll find charming squares graced with sparkling fountains and an atmosphere that is quite simply, radiant. It was here in 1889 and 1890 that Vincent Van Gogh completed more than 150 paintings and sketches while being treated at a psychiatric hospital. The subject matters of many of those works of art, which include "Irises," can still be seen in the surrounding countryside, a landscape of wheat fields, olive groves and cypresses.

St. Remy is also associated with French astrologer and enigmatic forecaster Nostradamus, who was born here in 1503. His house still stands on Rue Hoche. Saint-Martin church, the largest building in town, is another architectural icon, especially its 14th-century bell tower. The acoustics inside the church are extraordinary, as is its restored organ, which boasts nearly 500 tubes.

After your guided walk, you'll be afforded ample free time to shop for antiques, browse the outdoor markets, or linger over a glass of wine while savoring Provence's remarkable cuisine. Afterwards, you'll rejoin your guide and coach at the appointed time and location and drive back to the pier in Marseilles.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1-hour of moderate walking over uneven cobblestone surfaces, plus any additional walking at the guests' discretion during free time. There will be some steps to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not considered suitable for those with mobility concerns. • Aix-En-Provence

A lovely drive into the Provençal countryside brings you to the charming old town of Aix-en-Provence. Here, your walking tour begins on the grand Cours Mirabeau, a wide avenue built on the site of the city's medieval ramparts and shaded by leafy 200-year-old trees. The avenue is one of the city's most beautiful, so be sure to notice the elegant facades of its private mansions, especially their wrought-iron balconies and finely carved doorways.

You will then explore the old Mazarin District, founded by Archbishop Michel Mazarin in 1646, and later home to many writers and artists such as Paul Cézanne. The district is also noted for its meticulously kept walled gardens. Later, discover beautiful St. Sauveur Cathedral with its many contrasting architectural styles, a legacy of countless additions and renovations performed between the 5th and 18th centuries. Most notable are the remnants of a Roman-era wall that were used in a later wall, and the 15th century Gothic portal.

Following your guided walking tour, you'll have just over an hour of free time to explore on your own before it's time to rejoin your coach and travel back to the pier in Marseille.

Please note: This tour consists of approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes of moderate walking over mostly flat or cobblestoned surfaces, plus any additional walking at the guests' discretion during free time. From the pier, it's a scenic drive inland toward the Alpilles, a range of arid limestone mountains where the village of St. Remy nestles at the foot. Upon arrival, you'll set-off on a seventy-five minute guided walking tour down its winding cobbled streets that are shaded by centuries-old plane trees. You will also find charming squares graced with sparkling fountains and an atmosphere that is quite simply, radiant. It was here in 1889 and 1890 that Vincent Van Gogh completed more than 150 paintings and sketches while being treated at the Saint Paul psychiatric hospital. A visit here offers a view of the room where Van Gogh convalesced and the perspective from his room's window that set the stage for many of his works. The subject matters of some of those works, including "Irises," can still be seen in the surrounding countryside, a landscape of wheat fields, olive groves and cypresses. Following your guided tour, you'll have ninety-minutes of free time to have lunch on your own and further explore this delightful village.

Rejoining your group, you'll next travel to nearby Arles, another town synonymous with Van Gogh who lived here prior to St. Remy. Many of the subjects he painted can easily be found by following the plaques on the Van Gogh Trail. Some of the highlights you'll see during your one-hour guided walking tour are the St. Trophime cathedral, a World Heritage Site known for its ornate 12th-century portal depicting the Last Judgment; the Town Hall, rebuilt in 1673 with its obelisk from Arles' Roman circus; Forum Square; and the ancient Roman Amphitheater. Afterwards, enjoy an hour of free time to stroll about on your own before re-boarding your coach for the return trip to Marseille.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2-hours of moderate to strenuous walking, plus any additional walking at the guests' discretion during free time. There are uneven cobblestone surfaces, steps and inclines to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not considered suitable for those with mobility concerns. Guests should be in reasonably good physical condition. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
