  • Set on a beautiful, sheltered harbor and overlooked by craggy volcanic hills, Akaroa is a popular resort town on Banks Peninsula in New Zealand. The name Akaroa means “Long Harbor.” Sailors from the HMS Britomart proclaimed British sovereignty for the land in 1840, but French settlers also settled in the area that year. There is still a heavy French influence found on the island, including many French local names.

As shore excursions to be offered in this port are not yet confirmed, below is a list of those offered previously. We make every effort to have excursions finalized at least 240 days in advance of sailing, and often sooner, so please check back regularly.

  • The Fox II Nature Sail

Sail around Arakoa harbor viewing the natural scenery and plentiful marine life on a spectacular 50-foot ketch built in 1922 from woods indigenous to New Zealand.

Depart directly from the pier on the magnificent Fox II, an historic former cargo carrier that has been wonderfully updated for sightseeing. You'll sail throughout the harbor of Akaroa, which in the native Maori language means "Long Harbor," a reference to this lengthy stretch of sea that a massive volcanic eruption formed millions of years ago. It's an incredibly scenic backdrop for your nature-watching cruise.

Of course, there's no telling what marine life you'll see, but these unspoiled waters are teeming with fur seals, little blue penguins, yellow-eyed penguins, and playful Hector's dolphin, the world's smallest oceanic dolphin. Being gray with black-and-white markings, they are easy to spot frolicking around the harbor.

You may also see a myriad of birds such as petrels, mollymawk albatross, gannets, and spotted shags, a light-colored species of cormorant that nests in colonies on rocky cliffs. The Fox II offers an intimate, non-intrusive and abundantly comfortable way to view the indigenous wildlife that frequents Araroa harbor. And, if you're feeling energetic, feel free to lend the crew a hand hoisting a halyard or pulling a sheet. After approximately 2 1/2 hours on the water, you'll return to the pier where your sailing adventure concludes.

Please note: This tour includes limited walking and is mostly seated. Assisting the crew is optional and at the guests' discretion. Due to accessibility issues, the tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Casual clothing which should include a light jacket and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

  • Akaroa Harbor Nature Cruise

One of New Zealand's most gorgeous harbors, Akaroa provides a scenic backdrop for this excursion around its pristine shore, where you're bound to see abundant marine life.

Depart right from the pier on a luxury catamaran that's ideal for viewing the natural wonders of Akaroa harbor. In the native Maori language, Akaroa means "Long Harbor," a reference to this lengthy stretch of sea that a massive volcanic eruption formed millions of years ago. Cruising along the pristine waterway, you'll learn of the harbor's geological history and see how the sea has eroded ancient lava flows at natural attractions such as majestic Cathedral Cave and the sheer cliff face of Scenery Nook, a volcanic amphitheater of pinks, purples and reds.

Still, the harbor's most impressive natural wonder is its teeming marine life. The chances are high that you will see fur seals, little blue penguins and the spotted shag, a light-colored species of cormorant that nests in colonies on rocky cliffs. The spotted shag is endemic to New Zealand and was featured on a postage stamp in a series devoted to native birds. These waters are also home to the playful Hector's dolphin, the world's smallest oceanic dolphin. Being gray with black-and-white markings, they are easy to spot frolicking around the harbor. Before returning to the pier, you will also cruise past the Akaroa Salmon Farm, where salmon are reared in protective pens before being harvested for international export.

Please note: This tour includes limited walking and is mostly seated. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the catamaran with limited assistance, and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. All guests must be able to board the boat from the jetty via a small gangway with handrails. Casual clothing which should include a light jacket and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

  • Traditional Akaroa Farm Experience

Experience life on a traditional New Zealand sheep farm, where six generations of the Johns family have worked Paua Bay Farm, their extraordinary 900-acre property.

Depart from the pier by coach for a short but picturesque ride due east to Paua Bay Farm. Nestled among extensive gardens and 600-year-old kahikatea and totara trees, the charming farmhouse is the centerpiece of the expansive working farm. As many as 4,500 sheep, cattle and deer roam the rural acreage, and you'll enjoy the opportunity to observe and even participate in the daily endeavors of farm life.

Upon arriving, you'll be greeted by a member of the Johns' family, who'll regale you with stories of the family's history, how the farm was developed, the various types of sheep kept here, and the principles of farming in New Zealand. Then, the eager sheep dogs take center stage and demonstrate their prodigious talents for herding sheep in accordance with their master's commands. If you'd like, you can participate in separating the sheep, before moving to the woolshed, where Murray will entertainingly elaborate on the life of a sheep shearer.

Besides watching farming activities, you'll also have time to stroll the garden of native plants and relax over tea and homemade scones. Following this wonderful pause in the workday, you'll perhaps reluctantly, rejoin your coach and drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 90-minutes of easy to moderate walking/standing. There may be some natural surfaces to negotiate at the farm. Due to accessibility issues at the farm, the tour is not available to wheelchair guests. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Casual clothing which should include a light jacket; sunscreen; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

  • Ice & Wings

Discover how the U.S. government and New Zealand have together explored Antarctica since the 1950s and then learn of the Kiwis' aviation history at an Air Force Museum.

It's a scenic drive of just over 90-minutes to Christchurch, known as the "Garden City" because of its emerald-green parks and public gardens. Behind the city's stunning beauty lies a rich, once concealed history of Antarctic exploration and military involvement. Antarctic explorers began sailing from this area in the early 1900s, and since the 1950s Christchurch has been the main staging center for Operation Deep Freeze, the U.S government's Antarctic project. It's all explained in revealing detail at the International Antarctic Center, a one-of-a-kind museum packed with fascinating exhibits, audio-visual shows and even rescued baby penguins. During your self-guided visit, you'll gain a deep insight into the challenges of exploring the frozen frontier at the bottom of the earth and have the opportunity to participate in some interactive activities, such as building a snowman, making a snowball or exploring a snow cave (the Hagglund ride is not included in the cost of the tour). Lunch is on your own at the venue.

Rejoining your coach, you will next make your way to the Royal New Zealand Air Force Museum, where the country's aviation history has been meticulously preserved in diverse collections. Inside, you'll find dozens of historic aircraft such as the world's only Vickers Vildebeest biplane, aviation barracks dating back to World War I, rare military uniforms and medals, and even unusual escape aids. You'll also discover how these artifacts are being preserved for future generations. Not just for aviation buffs, the museum is a memorial to all those who have served in the New Zealand and Allied flying services. Following your visit, you'll be transferred back to the pier and your awaiting ship.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 3-hours of moderate walking/standing over mostly flat surfaces. Other interactive activities are at the guests' discretion. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. These champion sheep dogs will take whistle commands from half a mile distance with speed and agility. The Farm's owner will share with you his life experiences farming the hills over the last 30 years.

Leaving Manderley Farm, you'll head back towards Akaroa and "The Giant's House." Originally known as Linton, the house is a unique part of the history of Akaroa – nestled in a secluded valley, it was built in 1880 for Akaroa's first bank manager. This grand house is reminiscent of the French style typical of Akaroa and features extensive use of native totara and kauri wood and has a magnificent imported staircase of mahogany and numerous classic features. • Christchurch Punting & Wine

Admire the natural beauty of Christchurch by gliding down the Avon River in a "punt" boat, followed by a tour of the city's botanical gardens and a wine tasting at Melton Estate.

Depart from the pier and enjoy a leisurely drive across the dramatic, volcanically formed Banks Peninsula. Much of the landscape has remained unchanged for centuries and as pristine as it was when Captain James Cook named the peninsula in 1769.

Upon reaching Christchurch, you'll board an open, flat-bottomed boat known as a "punt" and begin gliding along the Avon River. Sit back and relax as the punter, standing on the stern like a gondolier, propels your boat by pushing a long pole against the riverbed. Shallow and tranquil, the river is also wonderfully narrow, providing you with a bird's-eye view of the glorious scenery that has earned Christchurch the nickname "Garden City."

Next, you'll get a different perspective of the flora in New Zealand's second-largest city by riding through the Christchurch Botanical Gardens in a lime-green, open-sided shuttle called the Caterpillar. Founded in 1863 with the planting of a single English Oak tree, the gardens have grown to include nearly 75 acres of native species, rare plants, and exotic succulents.

Then, it's on to Melton Estate, a boutique winery that produces numerous award-winning wines that include elegant Sauvignon Blancs, complex Pinot Noirs, and fruity Rieslings. You'll have the opportunity to sample several of the vintages while enjoying lunch. Afterwards, you'll re-board your coach and drive back to the pier in Akaroa.

Please note: This tour includes a limited amount of walking; however, guests must be able to enter and exit the punt which sits low in the water, from alongside the river. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not recommended for those with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing to include a light jacket; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Start with a scenic 45-minute ride through the lush Akaroa countryside, with its picturesque bays, panoramic views of rolling hills and sheep grazing in the green fields. New Zealand is known for its sheep industry, as your first destination will show you.

You'll arrive at Manderley Farm, one of many farms in this area of Canterbury, greeted by a friendly hello and a spot of morning tea. After your refreshment, experienced farm hands will then lead you to the sheep-shearing shed where you'll get to see a demonstration. Another key member of the sheepherding team is the dog. You'll marvel at the considerable talents of these four-legged herders as they perform a lively display of their abilities for you. See top New Zealand sheep dogs gather a mob of sheep from nearly hills herding them down for their master for your photo opportunity. These champion sheep dogs will take whistle commands from half a mile distance with speed and agility. Ross will talk about his life experiences farming the hills over the last 30 years.

Leaving Manderley Farm, head back towards Akaroa and "The Giant's House." Originally known as Linton, the house is a unique part of the history of Akaroa – nestled in a secluded valley, it was built in 1880 for Akaroa's first bank manager. This grand house is reminiscent of the French style typical of Akaroa and features extensive use of native totara and kauri wood and has a magnificent imported staircase of mahogany and numerous classic features. The gardens are like a living art gallery with a sculpture mosaic garden that's colorful, exuberant, interactive, romantic, fun and full of surprises. Touches of whimsy create many magical moments and make for an unforgettable experience.
