  • Cairns is the capital of Far North Queensland, and its east coastal cities rest along the Great Barrier Reef. The state of Queensland occupies a vast 667,000 square miles and much of the land remains uninhabited, covered with miles of rainforest where Australian teak, hopp, pine and fig trees abound. Before 1879, when the city of Cairns was established, the only inhabitants of this region were the Aborigines, the culture for which Australia is perhaps best known.

As shore excursions to be offered in this port are not yet confirmed, below is a list of those offered previously. We make every effort to have excursions finalized at least 240 days in advance of sailing, and often sooner, so please check back regularly.

  • Exclusive Frankland Islands

Cruise to the gorgeous Frankland Islands to spend a carefree day snorkeling, sunbathing and relaxing on this cluster of uninhabited islands just offshore.

Depart from the pier and enjoy a picturesque drive south to the Mulgrave River, where you will begin a leisurely cruise down the winding waterway. The surrounding rainforest-clad hills make for phenomenal views.

Before long, the magnificent Frankland Islands will come into view, as they lie only six miles offshore. Completely uninhabited and unspoiled, this cluster of islands has changed little over the centuries. Here you will spend the day, doing whatever you please.

You might snorkel over the coral reefs, which are protected as part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The waters are typically crystal-clear and teeming with marine life that includes green sea turtles, giant clams, and countless colorful fish. As an alternative, you can stay dry and still view the underwater world from the comfort of a semi-submersible or glass-bottom boat.

Later, you might want to join the naturalist on a walk that reveals some of the unique aspects of the rock pools along the shore. Or simply relax on the beach, savoring a buffet lunch and doing nothing more industrious than lying in the sun with a good book. You will spend about three and a half carefree hours in the Frankland Islands before retracing your route back to the pier in Cairns.

Please note: Walking on this tour is mainly at the guests’ discretion but is primarily over uneven and natural surfaces. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Those who take part in any water activities do so at their own risk and responsibility and guests with asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, heart or respiratory conditions should exercise extra caution. A swimsuit worn under a cover-up; sun cap; sunglasses; sunscreen; a towel from the ship; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

  • Qigong in Rainforest Village

Practice the Chinese exercise qigong in the rainforest in an attempt to enhance your life force through slow tai chi-like movements and breathing techniques used in meditation.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a picturesque drive inland to the rainforest village of Kuranda. The Djabugay aboriginal people have lived in this rainforest for more than 10,000 years, although the village wasn’t established until 1888. Today, Kuranda is a thriving community of artists and imaginative people who deeply respect differing cultures and place great value on the spiritual side of life.

The rainforest surrounding Kuranda provides an excellent and spectacularly serene location to practice qigong, an ancient Chinese exercise and healing technique. Although many forms of qigong are practiced throughout the world, they all involved controlled breathing, meditation and slow flowing movements.

The goal is to “master your energy,” which is how the word “qigong” is sometimes translated. Much like yoga and tai chi, qigong is a mind-body exercise, and you will find that practicing it can produce a calm, meditative state of mind. When practiced over a lengthy period of time, the exercise can improve balance and bone health.

Following your qigong session in the rainforest, you will pause for a glass of organic juice and then enjoy free time to browse the shops in Kuranda. You can expect to find hand-crafted jewelry, locally produced fashions, colorful artwork and traditional merchandise such as boomerangs and didgeridoos. After shopping, you will return to the pier.

Please note: The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those guests with mobility concerns is cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. There are approximately 10 steps to navigate into the studio, uneven surfaces and some steps to navigate through Kurana Village. Comfortable, flat walking shoes, light clothing are recommended.
