  • Capital of the ancient Kingdom of Kandy, Colombo has been visited for over 2,000 years by Roman, Chinese, Arab and European traders. Explore this exotic city and view colorful colonial buildings including the Presidential Secretariat, the Grand Oriental Hotel, and the Lighthouse Clock Tower. A “must” to visit is Pettah, Colombo's leading bazaar district. The narrow cobbled streets are lined with shops and street stalls offering the most unimaginable range of goods. Other noteworthy sights include Viharamahadevi Park, the city's largest and oldest green expanse; and the palatial mansions of Cinnamon Gardens.

As shore excursions to be offered in this port are not yet confirmed, below is a list of those offered previously. We make every effort to have excursions finalized at least 240 days in advance of sailing, and often sooner, so please check back regularly.

  • Panoramic Colombo

This driving tour around Colombo showcases its most famed landmarks, leaving you with a wonderful overview of Sri Lanka's largest city.

Boarding your coach at the pier, you will commence a comfortable drive around this energetic city of more than a million inhabitants. There is no easier, more leisurely way to see the absolute highlights of Colombo, the former capital.

The city's modern side is evident in the many high-rises towering above the Fort, an area named because of a 19th century British fortress there. The Fort is also known for the Old Parliament, built in the Neo-Baroque style during the British reign. In fact, the British influence is highly evident throughout Colombo, and you will notice that many of the streets are named for former British governors.

You will also drive past the luxurious Galle Face Hotel, another landmark from the British colonial period. Located right on the Indian Ocean, it is a masterpiece of Victorian architecture. The Pettah, another historical area of Colombo, is a landmark, as well. Formerly an exclusive residential area with stately homes, the Pettah is now the primary bazaar district.

Later, you will see Gangaramaya Temple and a mosque, giving you a religious perspective of Colombo. Higher education is also held in great esteem, as you will see by driving past the Royal College and the University of Colombo.

After having gained an excellent overview of the city, you will drive back to the pier where your tour concludes.

Please note: This tour is a seated panoramic tour that has very little walking. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have a companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability. Light cotton clothing; sun cap; sunglasses and flat comfortable walking shoes are suggested. The order of the sights viewed may vary. Tour duration may vary dependent upon traffice conditions.

Visit a tea plantation for a fascinating insider's tour that depicts how one of Sri Lanka's most important cash crops is cultivated.

Setting off from the pier, it's a scenic 2-hour drive to Ingiriya, a lush region boasting ideal conditions for growing tea and rubber. Upon your arrival at the tea plantation, you will be welcomed with garlands made from tea leaves that are grown on the premises.

The production of tea is essential to the economy of western Sri Lanka, and you will be given the opportunity to see how it is processed from the field to being ready for brewing. Watch the tea being plucked from the plant, dried, fermented and graded according to size. No artificial ingredients are ever added at any stage of the manufacturing process. • Meditation Session With a Buddhist Thera

Meditate at a Theravada Buddhist temple while following an elder’s instructions with the goal of attaining a certain level of calmness and self-enlightenment.

After departing from the pier, you will drive into the countryside on the outskirts of Colombo and on to the Sri Sugatharamaya Temple, a Buddhist teaching and learning center. Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka nearly 2,500 years ago, and today the vast majority of the country practices Theravada Buddhism, also known as Southern Buddhism.

Theravada means “the way of the elders” in the Pali language, and this form of Buddhism closely follows the original doctrines of Buddha and the monastic elders. Theravada draws its spiritual foundation from the Pali canon, the oldest record of Buddha’s teachings.

Upon arriving at Sri Sugatharamaya, you will proceed to the meditation hall to honor Buddha with a flower offering. To enhance your understanding of the religion, the temple’s elder or “thera” will explain some of Buddha’s teachings.

Meditation follows, during which you will be guided step by step to attain a certain state of calmness. Theravada Buddhism emphasizes the importance of meditation for self-liberation and to reach enlightenment. Practicing meditation in such a sacred setting, led by an elder, can be a transformative experience.

Following the meditation session, you will be served a vegetarian curry lunch. Although not all Theravada Buddhists are vegetarian, the majority are by personal choice. After dining, you will return to the pier.

Please note: This tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Participants should be in good physical condition. Knees and shoulders must be covered for both – men and women. Comfortable clothing that allows free movement and comfortable trainers or walking shoes are recommended.

  • An Ultimate Traditional Dance Therapy

Release tensions and positively alter your mood in a therapeutic Kandyan dance session, where you will practice the graceful moves of Sri Lanka’s national dance.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for an enlightening drive to Mount Lavinia, a residential suburb of Colombo. Sir Thomas Maitland, the Governor General of Ceylon (the former name of Sri Lanka) named the city in the early 1800s after a dancer whom he loved. In keeping with the morality of the times, their romance was clandestine, as she was from the lowest caste and he was a governor so powerful that he was nicknamed “King Tom.”

It’s only fitting that your dance therapy should be held in a city named in honor of a dancer. Here, a dance guru will teach you the basics of traditional Kandyan dance, an ancient folk dance that originated in the Sri Lankan city of Kandy. The dance was supposedly first performed by shamans as an exorcism ritual to cure a king affected by black magic.

Today, Kandyan dance has become an iconic performance art throughout Sri Lanka. Traditionally, only percussion instruments accompany the dance moves such as those that you will learn. There are several types of Kandyan dancing, ranging from a sedate form known as “pantheru” to the more vigorous and famous “ves,” which involves dervish-like whirling pirouettes. Kandyan dancing is thought to relieve stress and brighten moods.

Following the engaging and highly entertaining dance therapy, you will return to the pier.

Please note: This tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Participants should be in good physical condition and able to keep up with the session. Comfortable clothing that allows free movement and comfortable trainers or walking shoes are recommended.
