Nanaimo, Tokushima, and San Andrés

Nanaimo, British Columbia

One of British Columbia’s oldest cities, Nanaimo is located on the east coast of Vancouver Island across the Strait of Georgia from the city of Vancouver. Its history is deeply rooted in over 3,000 years of Snuneymuxw First Nation heritage, and a variety of walking tours reveal the downtown’s historic 19th-century architecture. You’ll find many opportunities to step out amongst the region’s natural beauty near the Port of Nanaimo, and the city’s Old Quarter offers a range of restaurants – from casual cafés to elegant bistros — plus intriguing shops.

Tokushima, Japan

Spread around Mt. Bizan, a scenic summit you may reach via ropeway (cable car), this pleasant city is the capital of Tokushima Prefecture on Shikoku Island, Japan’s smallest main island. It is renowned for a pair of beloved Japanese traditions: Awa Odori, an annual dance festival held in mid-August, and a unique brand of indigo dye called ‘Awa-ai’ that is used to create iconic aizome products. The city is also home to four of the 88 temples that comprise the Shikoku Henro (Pilgrimage). Look for foods featuring sudachi, a locally grown citrus fruit.

San Andrés, Colombia

Locals call the waters that surround this seahorse-shaped island mar de siete colores (sea of seven colors), but you may be too dazzled by glistening white sand and tall palm trees to notice. San Andrés lies a distant 480 miles (775 kilometers) northwest of mainland Colombia but only 93 miles (150 kilometers) from Nicaragua. Snorkel or scuba in crystal-clear bays and cays, soak up island vibes to a reggae soundtrack along Playa Spratt Bight’s beach promenade or wander the shops and restaurants of San Andrés Town.

Rovinj, Scrabster, and Probolinggo

Rovinj, Croatia

Rovinj, a charming fishing port on the west coast of the Istrian Peninsula, rises from the Adriatic Sea like a cluttered fortress, with old Venetian houses tightly crowded down to the seafront and cobbled streets leading to the hilltop Church of St. Euphemia. Picturesque Old Town is contained within an egg-shaped peninsula and beckons with unique boutiques, outdoor cafes and fine art galleries, not to mention bistros and restaurants serving Italian dishes and local wines. Venture into the Istrian hinterlands for medieval hilltop villages, vineyards, olive groves and all-things truffles.

Scrabster, Scotland

Tucked along the windswept coast of northern Scotland, Scrabster is a rugged gem where land meets sea in a spectacular fashion. This working harbor town offers striking views across the Pentland Firth and quick access to the mystical Orkney Islands. Stroll the weathered docks lined with fishing boats and then hike the nearby cliffs for panoramic vistas and seabird sightings. The air here carries salt and history, steeped in Norse heritage and Highland lore.

Probolinggo, Indonesia

Situated on the north coast of East Java, Probolinggo is known by locals for its fish market but by travelers for its proximity to Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park, home of Indonesia's most spectacular volcano. The iconic Mount Bromo is reached via the mountain village of Cemoro Lawang; it culminates with a pony ride to the cliffs of the volcano’s six-mile-wide caldera. In Probolinggo, hop in a pedicab to see the city’s Chinese temple, go for a swim at Bentar Indah Beach and be sure to buy an authentic batik keepsake.

Piombino, Italy

Piombino, Italy

Perched on a coastal promontory in southern Tuscany, Piombino blends ancient history with seaside charm. Just beyond the town, the Archeological Park of Baratti and Populina reveals the ruins of a once-thriving Etruscan city. In town, a stroll through the medieval gateway leads to Piazza Bovio, offering sweeping views of the Tuscan Archipelago. Piombino is also the gateway to Elba, where visitors can sunbathe on pristine beaches or explore Napoleon’s island retreat.
