A mere 15 minutes from the port terminal, lies the entrance
to the New Forest National Park, a uniquely captivating and
dare I say, magical place. Its untamed beauty is made up
of seemingly endless pastures, heathland and woodland,
peppered with chocolate box villages, charming churches
and stately homes.
The area is abundant with history, created by William I
(William The Conqueror) in 1079 as a royal forest for deer
hunting, the landscape is protected and unchanged giving
the impression that you have stepped back in time. Two of
William’s sons died in the Forest: Prince Richard in 1081 and
The Rufus Stone marks the spot where King William II was
fatally wounded with an arrow, in the year 1100AD. Local
folklore asserted that this was punishment for the destruction
of hamlets by William when he created his New Forest
or ‘Nova Foresta’.
