A LITTLE STOP ON A LONG JOURNEY
Pouring out of the mountains, a river
of civilization called Jamestown fills a
narrow valley flowing into James Bay,
bringing life to one of the world’s most
remote islands: ST. HELENA.
A BEGINNING
When first discovered in 1502, the Portuguese kept this
previously uninhabited island a secret for more than 85
years before it was visited by an English navigator en
route home from his voyage around the world. From
then, St. Helena became a key port of call for ships sailing
between Europe and Indonesia, until the Suez Canal was
opened in 1869.
AN EXILE
Not quite 47 square miles around and located more than
1,200 miles west of South Africa and 2,500 miles east of
Brazil, this isolated stretch of volcanic rock became known
for another reason in 1815, when Napoleon Bonaparte was
exiled there for the remainder of his life. He died on the
island on May 5, 1821, only six years after his arrival. His
remains were eventually shipped back to France, but his
original gravesite on the island still exists.
A REPRIEVE
Today, this little island has grown to nearly 6,600
inhabitants and even has its own airport. It’s a serene,
little stopover when crossing the Atlantic between Africa
and South America, where visitor can explore its dramatic
landscape. Birders often hope to catch a view of the
critically endangered wirebird and historians enjoy touring
where Napoleon spent his final days, while those looking
for an extra challenge might take on the 699 steps of the
Jacob’s Ladder staircase in Jamestown for mountain view
of this valley township.
