Across the river in the village of Exbury, take in the
exceptional beauty of Exbury Gardens, one of the finest
woodland gardens in the country belonging to a branch of
the Rothschild family. It’s famous for its enormous collection
of rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias.
BURLEY
A major attraction within the forest, Burley is best known for
its ancient folklore. When renovating the village pub, the 17th
century Queen’s Head, a secret cellar was discovered which
housed a stash of smugglers pistols, coins and alcohol. This
unusual village has long been linked to witchcraft, even in
more recent times. Sybil Leek a famous ‘white’ witch lived in
the village in the 1950’s and was often seen walking around
in her long black cloak with her pet jackdaw sitting on her
shoulder.
FOOD & DRINK
A trip to the UK wouldn’t be complete without sampling the
local ales, and you’ll find no warmer welcome than at The
Royal Oak in Fritham as long as you don’t mind sharing with
an array of wet and muddy dog walkers. This small free house
set deep in the heart of the forest, dates back to the 1600’s
and has been serving ales for centuries. If you are looking for
a more refined and less muddy experience, another favorite
is The Pig at Brockenhurst. Creating from its own kitchen
garden and championing local produce, this restaurant with
rooms offers an elegant menu with a spot of rustic glamour.
So, before or after your unrivaled cruise experience why not
visit this area and delight in the quirky attractions it has to
offer and who knows, one day they might let me pop down
from the office to the port to host a Land Program.
