  • Colonial Houses

The tour through the large and old Colonial and Republican houses will introduce you to the opulence that this city lived, during that period of its history. The aged residences stand out for their sober facades, while the artistic bars of cast iron on its large windows add a touch of distinction and elegance. In the interior, its luxuriously decorated rooms and its ample patios with tiles of the era stick out. Some of the houses you will visit are:

The Casa Urquiaga, now housing the Banco de la Reserva, hosts a collection of furniture, art, mirrors and pre-Columbian ceramics.

The Casa de la Emancipación, a beautifully restored republican home where Marquis Torre Tagle signed a document declaring Trujillo's independence from Spain in 1820 - long before the libertadores arrived. The house also contains a small exhibit on César Vallejo, Peru's most famed poet, who was born in the nearby mountain town of Santiago de Chuco.

The Palacio Itúrregui that houses the Club Central (a private club). The house was built in 1855 in the Italian Neo-Renaissance style by General Juan Manuel Itúrregui and has three plazas ringed with ornate columns, marble floors and ceilings with gold moldings.

Before returning to the ship, enjoy a cocktail at the Casa Aramburú Jimeno.

Please note: Jeans, t-shirts and athletic shoes or beach-type sandals are not allowed in the Club Central.

  • Trujillo City Tour and Archaeological Museum

Discover the rich history of Peru’s first independent city and its most alluring attractions by visiting an archaeological museum and the vibrant square in the heart of Trujillo.

After departing from the pier, you will drive up the coast to Trujillo, which was founded in 1534, making it the second-oldest Spanish city in Peru. Conquistador Francisco Pizarro named Trujillo in honor of his birthplace in Spain.

You will gain a greater understanding of Trujillo’s founding and fascinating past at the Archaeological Museum of the National University of Trujillo. Located in a 17th-century house, the museum displays a collection of artifacts that trace the region’s history starting with the arrival of the first inhabitants 12,000 years ago. While browsing, you can expect to see revealing ceramics, mummies and relics unearthed in the Moche pyramids nearby.

You will next visit Trujillo’s bustling city center, an area full of beautifully preserved colonial architecture. Highlights include a 17th-century cathedral, the ornate city hall and several historical residences once owned by affluent colonial families. The homes have been restored to their original colors and feature outstanding wrought-iron on the windows.

During free time around the main square of Plaza de Armas, be sure to notice the Freedom Monument. It was here in 1820 that Trujillo became the first Peruvian city to proclaim its intention to become independent from Spanish colonial rule.

You might also browse the shops and galleries around the square before returning to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1.5 hours of easy walking. It is available to guests who utilize a collapsible wheelchair, are able to both make their way on and off the coach and have a companion to assist them. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Casual, weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable, flat walking shoes are suggested.

  • Temples and Paso Horses

Gain a deeper understanding of the region’s past by visiting an archaeological site and a sprawling hacienda, where you will watch Peruvian Paso horses perform.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at an archaeological site near the city of Trujillo. This area was the capital of the Moche empire until the 9th century, when it may have been destroyed by the catastrophic effects of El Niño, a weather phenomenon that periodically causes flooding along the northern coast of Peru.

Regardless of what decimated the population, the remains of the Moche civilization are intriguing, as you will discover at the site’s pyramids. Besides boasting sophisticated construction, the sacred Pyramid of the Moon features huge, complex murals that reveal the Moche culture. The complementary Pyramid of the Sun was more administrative than religious but is equally impressive, being the largest adobe structure in the Americas.

Following a tour of the excavated ruins, you will visit a nearby hacienda that breeds Peruvian Paso horses. Descended from horses that the Spaniards introduced in the 1500s, the Peruvian Paso is known for its exceptionally smooth, four-beat gait, which is inherited among purebreds. The ambling gait is especially prized by riders that spend long periods of time on horseback, working on the ranches and riding across the rugged countryside.

While enjoying a traditional lunch at the hacienda, you will watch the horses perform and see firsthand just how smooth and comfortable the resulting ride is. Afterwards, you will return to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1.5 hours of walking and approximately 80 steps to visit the Moon temple. It is not recommended for guests who utilize a wheelchair. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Casual, weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable, flat walking shoes are suggested.

  • The Ceviche Experience

Travel to Huanchaco to watch a master chef prepare the iconic Peruvian fish dish of ceviche, and later, fishermen as they demonstrate their skills in traditional reed boats.

Depart from the pier and drive north, following a coastal route to beach-blessed Huanchaco, where you may see surfers riding waves, fishermen tending their nets, and fishing boats on the horizon. It's here that you'll stop in a waterfront restaurant to watch an award-winning chef prepare Huanchaco's most famous dish: ceviche.

Although the origin of ceviche is disputed, the dish is nevertheless revered in this region. In pre-Columbian times, the raw fish in ceviche was marinated in juice from maize. Today, it's marinated in juice from limes, which the Spanish introduced in the late 15th century.

While there are many variations in the recipe, in Peru ceviche is traditionally made with sea bass or sole and topped with diced red onions, minced habanero peppers, and chopped cilantro. It's often served with cold slices of sweet potatoes and corn on the cob. Following the chef's demonstration, you'll enjoy a tasting of the freshly prepared ceviche.

Afterwards, it's on to the beach, where you'll watch an exhibition by fishermen in traditional reed boats known as sea horses or "caballitos" because the reeds are so flexible the boats look like galloping horses in the surf. The reeds are absorbent, so in time the fishing boats must be stood on their ends to dry in the sand, an image synonymous with Huanchaco. Following this fascinating look at some time-honored Peruvian traditions, you'll re-board your coach and travel back to the pier in Salaverry.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1-hour of moderate walking and there are some steps to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate casual clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

  • Trujillo and the Temples of the Sun and Moon

These amazing huacas, or temples, were built during the Mochica era (1-650 AD) on the left side of the Moche River in Southern Trujillo. Huacas were traditionally built against a sacred hill, and the Huaca de la Luna required more than fifty million adobe bricks to be constructed. In front of the Huaca de la Luna is the Huaca del Sol, probably the largest mud-brick structure in the Americas. The Huaca del Sol is 372 yards long, 175 yards wide and was originally over 130 feet high! Like the Huaca de la Luna, it has a series of terraces and slopes leading to its summit. You'll also visit the Huaca de la Luna, built as an extension to the hill, which uncovers the secrets of the Mochica civilization through walls with vibrantly painted reliefs carved from the adobe structure.

After this captivating historical sojourn you will drive to Trujillo, which still retains much of its colonial charm and is adorned by a splendid backdrop consisting of the vivid green and brown terrain of the Andean foothills. Be sure to visit its pleasant and spacious Plaza de Armas, where the main Cathedral, and City Hall, stand. Surrounding this impressive colonial square, you'll find many magnificently, richly-colored buildings with decorative windows or balconies, including the must-see Libertador Hotel and Orbegoso Mansion. Following your visit, you'll drive through the city before returning to the pier.

Please note: Comfortable shoes are a must, as there are ramps and stairs to negotiate at the temples. Sunscreen and a hat are also essential. Bear in mind that these areas are undergoing a continuous excavation process.

  • Chan-Chan City of Palaces

Chan-Chan is one of the most spectacular cities, and the largest construction of mud in the New World. It was once the capital of the Chimu Civilization, predecessors of the ancient Incas. Upon arrival in Chan-Chan, your walking tour will commence.

Chan-Chan is virtually a city of palaces, and must be seen to be believed. The city walls enclose eight square miles of buildings, including small wattle and daub huts, medium-sized adobe brick houses, and the huge fortresses, or palaces, of the era's nobility. These palaces typically contained many rooms and patios, and were surrounded by their own walls. Your guide will explain the significance of the intricate relief's and patterns carved into these walls. Each palace also contained ceremonial courtyards, some decorated with a repeating design of birds or animals. The smallest courtyards were thought to be the most important and only accessible to the inner circle. Ironically, these courtyards lacked ornamentation or decoration, which has baffled archeologists for ages. It is now thought that these courtyards were once festooned with amazing weavings and fabrics, which the Chimu people held more valuable than gold and silver. Often a palace was abandoned once its noble owner died, and a new one constructed next door. As a result, these amazing buildings range in age from 900 and 1470 AD.

Please note: Comfortable shoes are a must, as there are ramps and stairs to negotiate at the site. Sunscreen and a hat are essential. These areas are going through a continuous process of excavation.

You'll continue on to Chan-Chan, home to one of the most spectacular and largest ancient cities built of mud in the New World.

Next you'll drive to Trujillo, Peru's second city. Founded by Pizarro in 1536, Trujillo still retains much of its colonial charm, and has a splendid backdrop consisting of the vivid green and brown terrain of the Andean foothills. You'll see the spacious Plaza de Armas, where the main Cathedral and City Hall stand, and the Libertador Hotel. Lunch will be served at a traditional Hacienda, with entertainment consisting of a "Peruvian Paso Horse Show", noted for the distinctive high-stepping, dance-like stride of the horses. • El Brujo

Explore an unusual archaeological site and museum that reveal the intricacies of the ancient Moche culture and the high priestess that ruled here.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a leisurely, wonderfully scenic drive up the coast, through the city of Trujillo and into the fertile Chicama Valley. While agriculture has long fueled the economy, this area is also widely known for El Brujo (“The Sorcerer”), an archaeological site where remnants of the Moche civilization have been unearthed.

The Moche culture flourished here until the 9th century and excavations revealing its wonders are still ongoing today. As you meander through the archaeological complex, you will discover its importance and the sophistication of the ancient Moche civilization.

Huaca Cao Viejo, the main shrine and pyramid, was made with thousands of adobe blocks and elaborately decorated with colored friezes and murals. As you behold these wonders, the guide will explain their significance and symbolism. You may also hear legends about how El Brujo originated and why it drew so many shamans and healers.

One of the greatest discoveries was the tomb of the Lady of Cao, the high priestess who ruled here. Her mummified body lies in the museum and is adorned with snake and spider tattoos similar to those typically depicted on Moche pottery. Other highlights that you may see in the museum include jewelry, textiles and a Moche idol sculpted out of a lucuma tree.

After browsing the museum, you will return to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes significant walking and/or standing - at times on uneven ground and approximately 80 steps; therefore, it is not recommended for guests who utilize a wheelchair.
