Ports and Excursions of Canada/New England

Bar Harbor, United States-port

Tall ships unfurl their sails and make for the open sea, while harbor seals, porpoises and whales play in the wide blue bay. From the mid-1800s until the great fire of 1947, Bar Harbor was a haven for wealthy summer visitors who built shingled, 60-room "summer cottages" on rocky promontories and islands. Today, the main interest is Acadia National Park, a magnificent landscape of towering coastal mountains and coves, lakes, hundreds of streams and ponds, and Somes Sound, a splendid glacial-carved fjord.

A Taste of Bar Harbor

Moderate Activity/Walking Meal

Duration: 3 hours

Tour Code: BHB-009

Discover why Bar Harbor attracts so many foodies by sampling a wide variety of delectable dishes and treats made with locally sourced ingredients on this culinary walking tour.

After meeting your local ‘food lover’ guide at the pier, you’ll commence a leisurely walk to Village Green, a park-like setting lined with restaurants that serve imaginative and classic Maine dishes. You will visit a number of these prime establishments and have the opportunity to sample their most popular offerings.

Your guide was born and raised in Bar Harbor and will happily impart to you unique, “insider’s tips” only the locals know. The shop owners are also quite willing to share the histories of their businesses, so your experience will be both fun and enlightening. You can expect to visit about a half dozen venues, among them the Fish House Grill. The proposed samplings there include delectable clam chowder, mini lobster roll and refreshing blueberry soda.

Other stops will be Bar Harbor BeerWorks, where you may sample a juicy burger, fries and craft beer. Maine’s official berry is the wild blueberry, so it’s only natural that it’s used in many of the state’s signature dishes and treats. It’s also very versatile as you will discover by sampling blueberry popcorn at Bar Harbor Popcorn and later, fresh blueberry pie at Cherrystones.

The latter is a restaurant that specializes in cherrystone clams. You will also taste these delectable bi-valves, which are harvested offshore throughout much of Maine. They are commonly eaten raw, grilled or chopped up for chowders and other New England dishes.

Before walking back to the pier you’ll stop at MDI Ice Cream, whose flavors include creamy coconut and blueberry with basil. Following your visit here, you have the option of walking directly back to the pier with your guide, or staying in town to further explore on your own, returning to the ship at your leisure.

Please note: This tour includes 3 hours of easy to moderate walking/standing and covers approximately 1 mile. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not recommended for those with walking difficulties. Layered clothing (weather can be unpredictable); an umbrella; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Please advise the Destination Services Desk at least 24 hours in advance. Regretfully, it is not possible to accommodate gluten-free requests. Cancellations made with 48 hours of the tour’s commencement are subject to a 100% cancellation penalty.
