Bruges, Belgium

Bruges, capital of the Belgian province of West Flanders, was once a wealthy city during medieval times when trade with Baltic ports flourished. But as the Zwin River, connecting Bruges with the North Sea, slowly began to narrow, the city's great trade period came to an unfortunate end.

Now, visitors are charmed by the well-preserved medieval architecture lining the old and narrow roads and canals. Take a walk down Walpein Street in central Bruges and shop for the region’s famous handmade Belgian lace. Or sit at one of the sidewalk cafes and sample local honey or beer. You won’t want to miss Belfry Tower, the city’s foremost edifice and the perfect look-out in case of war.
