Addo Elephant Back Riding Safari By Air

Light Activity /Walking Regent Choice

Duration: 5 hours

Tour Code: PTE-004

Ride atop an Addo Elephant through one of South Africa’s most biologically diverse areas, and then observe these massive creatures in their natural habitat.

Transfer from the pier to the Port Elizabeth Airport where you will board a light aircraft for the twenty-minute flight to the Addo Elephant Back Safaris landing strip. Located in the pristine valley of the Zuurberg Mountains, the grounds of Addo Elephant Back Safaris borders the recently proclaimed Greater National Park of the same name. This area is regarded as one of the most biologically diverse eco-regions in Southern Africa, encompassing habitats ranging from the semi-arid Karoo to fynbos-covered slopes and impenetrable thickets that extend into rolling grasslands.

Upon arrival at the airstrip, you will be met by an elephant warden and transferred to the reception area. Next, climb aboard one of these African elephants and proceed on a 30-minute extraordinary ride through the bush. As your elephant ambles along, you will enjoy an unprecedented view from your lofty perch.

Either before or after the ride, you will be invited to join in a bushwalk with the elephants. As you walk through the diverse terrain with the elephants by your side, you’ll have the unique opportunity of observing their habits and interactions with each other. These gentle giants are highly intelligent, and may reach out to nudge you with their trunks. Being touched, nudged or gently pushed shows their curiosity and trust. The experience of being so closely involved with these inquisitive, mild-mannered elephants, can give you the feeling of oneness at an emotional and visceral level that is immensely elevating and yet, somehow disquieting. Afterwards, enjoy a light lunch and refreshment while watching the elephants as they frolic at a watering hole and wallow in the mud to protect their skin from the elements.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 90-mintues of easy to moderate walking. There will be natural and uneven surfaces to negotiate. In the event that the flights are cancelled and transfers are done by road, be advised that the gravel road up to the lodge is steep and bumpy. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Guests should be relatively fit and agile. The elephants do not wear saddles which some guests may find uncomfortable. Weather appropriate clothing to include long pants; sunglasses; sunscreen; binoculars; insect repellant; and flat, comfortable shoes are recommended. For safety reasons, no children under the age of 6 years are allowed on this tour. Guests are not permitted to use cellular phones or speak loudly as this may disturb the animals. Smoking is not permitted during this tour. There are restroom facilities at the airport and at the lodge. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. The camp has three elephants which means you may be split from your traveling companion(s). Air flights are contingent upon prevailing weather and in the even the aircraft is grounded, transportation to and from the camp will be by vehicle and will lengthen the duration of the tour.
