Christchurch (Lyttelton), New Zealand-port

Christchurch is the largest city of the South Island. Sprawling out across the Canterbury Plains, Christchurch was incorporated as a city in 1862. It was named after the Oxford College attended by John Robert Godley, leader of the settlers arriving in the first four ships to Christchurch. It is a charming city, a garden city with many parks within its boundaries. The city has a backdrop of the Southern Alps and long, ocean beaches are only a short drive away.

Christchurch Heritage & Garden Tour

Light Activity /Walking Meal

Duration: 4 hours

Tour Code: CHC-007

Discover the historic beauty of Christchurch, a former planned Church of England settlement. A special highlight is a private home and garden visit.

Depart the pier in Lyttelton with your local guide for the drive through the Lyttelton Tunnel to the Old Provincial Chambers. Upon arrival take a guided tour of one of Christchurch's most historic buildings and see where Canterbury's provincial parliament met until the mid 1870s. You will then walk to the nearby Arts Center, where you will board the Christchurch Tram for a pleasant orientation tour of the inner city. Along the way, your guide will provide you with an informative commentary about the city and point out some of the finer buildings. Upon returning to the Arts Center, some time will be made available to browse through its many excellent craft shops and galleries.

Your tour will conclude with a visit to a lovely home and garden, where you will have an opportunity to talk with the owner over a cup of morning tea. Following your visit, you will return to Lyttelton via the charming seaside suburb of Sumner and Evans Pass and take in panoramic views over Lyttelton Harbour, before reaching the pier and ship.

Please note: Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
