First developed into a port in 1889, Moji flourished as a coal exporting hub that drew financial institutions and merchant companies. The former Moji Customs Building, built in 1912, along with iconic Mojiko Station, former Moji Mitsui Club (where Albert Einstein stayed) and the former Kyushu Railway Headquarters are among thel Western-style buildings that make up Moji’s restored, ‘retro and modern’ waterfront. After taking in spectacular views at the modern Mojiko Retro Observation Room, stroll Mekari Park’s seafront promenade and the Shiranoe Botanical Garden, home to over 800 maple trees.
