Alicante, Novelda & Wine Tasting

Moderate Activity/Walking

Duration: 4 1/2 hours

Tour Code: ALC-006

This tour provides you with the perfect opportunity to explore two Mediterranean cities located in the heart of the Costa Blanca.

Your tour begins in Alicante, capital of the Costa Blanca (White Coast), also known as the Ciudad de la Luz or the City of Light. It is situated on the shores of a large deep bay which forms a magnificent natural harbor. Arriving in the old quarter of the city, you will commence a walking tour where one of the sites you will be able to view is the 18th century Neo-Baroque town hall. Its main features are the two barley-twist columns on the inside of the main facade, which are of Italian design. From here, you will walk to the San Nicolas de Bari Cathedral for a visit. The Cathedral dates from the 17th century and one of its most notable features is its Renaissance baroque facade. Inside, you will discover an impressive 17th century nave and a 15th century cloister.

Re-boarding your coach, you will travel from Alicante to the city of Novelda, where a visit to its most important historic building, the sanctuary of Santa María Magdalena. This religious building was built as part of a project undertaken by Novelda-based engineer, José Sala, who imbued his project with the Catalan Modernist style. This is made quite clear, as it is very much a Gaudi inspired design and has been likened to the Sagrada Familia. The side-chapel for Saint Mary Magdalene, the Patron Saint of Novelda, is located at the end, in the apse. A lovely painting attributed to Gastón Castelló can also be found behind the altar.

Following your visit to Novelda, you will travel the short distance to the Bodega Heretat de Cesilia. Upon arrival, you will have a guided visit of the wine cellar which begins in front of the main facade of the Bodega's rustic house. Included is a short introduction to the history of the wine cellar. Within the building itself you will be able to see the old machinery once used for wine-making and its evolution up until the present day. Here, you will also learn about the wine-making process - from the receiving of the grapes, all the way through the actual processing it goes through before being bottled and labeled. At the end of your guided tour, you will be invited to taste a glass of one of the wines produced here before it's time to re-join your coach and travel back to the ship.

Please note: his tour includes approximately 2 1/2 hours of moderate walking/standing. There are steps and cobblestone surfaces to negotiate, as well as a steep incline at Santa María Magdalena. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; a hat; sunglasses and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. The minimum age to participate in the wine tasting is 18 years old. If there is an event taking place at the Cathedral, and inside visit will not be permitted. The order of the sites viewed or visited may vary.
