Bocelli Countryside Escape

Light Activity /Walking Regent ChoiceMeal

Duration: 9 hours

Tour Code: LRN-020

Experience the joys of Tuscany by exploring medieval Volterra, browsing Andrea Bocelli’s theater, sampling wines at his family vineyard and visiting Pisa’s glorious Square of Miracles.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for an immensely scenic drive through the Tuscan countryside to the hilltop town of Volterra. Known for its Etruscan walls, parts of which still remain, Volterra is wonderfully historical, as you will discover while meandering through attractions such as its beautifully preserved Roman theater. The Piazza dei Priori, a medieval square lined with grand palaces, is another architectural gem.

Continuing on, you will soon arrive in Lajatico, the birthplace of revered Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. Here you will find the Teatro del Silenzio, an open-air amphitheater where Bocelli performs but once a year. The rest of the time, the theater is silent, filled only by the sounds of nature. Built in 2006, it’s quite the setting and especially dear to Bocelli, whose architect brother spearheaded its construction.

The family’s influence also extends into wine making. You will have the opportunity to tour the vineyards on the farm that the Bocelli’s have owned since 1730 and sample a selection of characteristic wines such as a lush Sangiovese and crisp, complex Pinot Grigio.

A four-course lunch follows, after which you will drive on to Pisa’s famed Square of Miracles to see Tuscan icons such as the cathedral, baptistery and campanile or Leaning Tower. After browsing this magnificent World Heritage Site, you will return to the pier.
