One of Europe’s most visually stunning cities, Barcelona balances the medieval intimacy of its Gothic Quarter with the grace and distinction of the wide boulevards in the Moderniste Eixample. It was the home of architect Antoni Gaudí, whose Sagrada Familia Cathedral, Park Güell and Casa Milà are the most profound statements of Modernisme. View the splendid works at the Picasso Museum and the Miro Foundation, or discover Barcelona’s passionate ambiance at a flamenco show.

  • POST - ESCAPADES IN BARCELONA & BEYOND CODE: BCNL26

Explore Barcelona and Girona in depth by visiting their architectural landmarks, often on guided walking tours and on your own with a liberating Hop On Hop Off bus voucher in the capital of Catalonia.

    Day 1: April 13, 2021

After disembarking the ship in Barcelona, you will begin a guided tour of the city. You will pass the Columbus monument and the waterfront on the way to Sagrada Familia, the extraordinary still-unfinished church that famed architect Antoni Gaudí worked on until his death in 1926. The guide will explain the history of the church and its lengthy ongoing construction during your outside visit.

Continuing on, you will begin a walking tour of the Gothic Quarter, passing landmarks such as the La Seu Cathedral and city hall. A more sweeping view of Barcelona awaits you upon reaching Mount Juic hill, where you may pause for photos. You will then visit Spanish Village, an open-air museum with replicas of characteristic houses from throughout Spain. As you meander the grounds, you may observe artists such as glassblowers demonstrating their talents.

A tapas-style lunch follows, after which you will check into your hotel to spend the first of three nights. The remainder of the day will be at your leisure. The hotel is located in the Eixample district of Barcelona just a 10 minute walk to Las Ramblas. Passeig de Gràcia, the city’s nicest shopping street, is easily reached on foot. Emblematic buildings and sights such as Casa Batlló, Casa Milà (La Pedrera), La Sagrada Familia, and the Picasso museum are also nearby should you wish to visit them on your own.

    Day 2: April 14, 2021

After breakfast, you will settle in for a direct transfer to Girona, accompanied by a guide. Northern Catalonia’s largest city, Girona is full of museums, galleries and Gothic churches, strung around a tangle of cobbled lanes and medieval walls. Reflections of modernist mansions shimmer in the river that divides the historic center from the gleaming commercial center.

During the comprehensive walking tour of the city center, you will enjoy an inside visit of the 12th-century Arab baths, and see the remains of Girona’s historical Jewish community. During free time that follows, you might savor lunch on your own before transferring back to Barcelona to spend the evening at the hotel.

    Day 3: April 15, 2021

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will receive a complimentary Hop On Hop Off bus voucher that will allow you to explore the attractions that interest you the most. Simply hop on the buses and hop off whenever you wish. The buses travel in a continuous loop between attractions that include the Picasso Museum, the Gaudí-designed houses Casa Battló and Casa Mila, and various shopping areas.

The entire day will be yours to spend as you please, with all meals on your own before retiring to the hotel for the evening.

    Day 4: April 16, 2021

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will check out by noon (subject to change). Transfers to the airport will be based on flight times. See your Welcome Letter for details. For guests with late-departing flights, luggage storage is available at the hotel.

  • PRE - FLAVORS OF CATALONIA & BEYOND CODE: BCNL22

Discover the extraordinary architecture and cuisine throughout Spain’s gorgeous Catalonia region and up into southern France, where you will enjoy enlightening city tours, wine tastings and free time to explore further.

This is a small group program - limited to 8 guests.

    Day 1

Upon arriving at the Barcelona International Airport, you will meet our local ground staff outside the luggage pick-up area. You will then accompany a representative to the Majestic Hotel (or a similar hotel), where you will spend the evening. Check in is 3PM. The remainder of the day will be at your leisure with meals on your own.

    Day 2

After breakfast at the hotel and then checking out, you will transfer to Girona. Northern Catalonia’s largest city, Girona has an abundance of fine museums, galleries and Gothic churches clustered about cobblestone lanes enclosed by medieval walls. Reflections of Modernista mansions shimmer in the Riu Onyar, which divides the historic center on one bank from the gleaming commercial center on the other.

After a bit of free time, you will make your way to the Michelin Star restaurant Massana for lunch. An idea, a dish. That's how the creative cooking at Massana comes into being, as well as making use of the highest quality seasonal ingredients. Before being seated, you will have the unique opportunity to look into the kitchen and see where the culinary masterpieces are prepared.

Following lunch, you will continue to Peralada and the castle of the same name. This former residence of the counts of Peralada was constructed in the 14th century and later converted into a palace. Now, it has become even more well-known for its winery, which you will tour and then enjoy a tasting of its extraordinary Catalan Cava.

Afterwards, you will cross the French border and check into the Hotel de la Cite Sofitel (or a similar hotel) in Carcassone to spend the evening. Once you settle in, a welcome dinner will be offered at the hotel’s nearby brasserie, Le Donjon.

    Day 3

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will transfer to the medieval citadel of Carcassone, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that the locals simply call La Cité. Perched on a rocky hilltop and featuring zigzag battlements, stout walls and spiky turrets, La Cité looks like a storybook castle, especially from afar.

After visiting the castle and wandering along its ramparts, you will transfer to the famed wine estate Château de l’Hospitalet. Situated in the heart of the La Clape Massif conservation area and overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the Château l’Hospitalet is a peaceful haven surrounded by a pine forest.

At the winery’s onsite restaurant, L’Art de Vivre, you will enjoy an inspiring lunch with wine and an enlightening master class. (During harvest season, visiting the vineyard and bodega will not be possible.)

Then, it’s on to Guissan to tour the massive sea salt evaporation ponds and sample the local oysters paired with a glass of wine from the Languedoc region. Thanks to microorganisms that thrive as salinity increases, the ponds are usually colored a stunning gradient of pink. It makes for a beautiful contrast, especially on a clear day.

After returning to the Hotel de la Cite Sofitel for the evening, dinner will be on your own.

    Day 4

After breakfast at the hotel and checking out, you will transfer to Narbonne. Once an important Roman seaport, Narbonne is known for exceptional architecture such as its cathedral and former archbishops’ palace and its thriving marketplace, Les Halles. After meandering through the market shops, taking in the aromas and colors, you will enjoy free time during which you might savor some French cuisine on your own.

Later, on the way to Barcelona, you will visit charming Les Clos de Paulilles, a premium wine estate. You can expect the sights to be absolutely breathtaking, and the estate’s wines beautifully capture the unique terroir. The highlight of your visit will be a tasting of several remarkable wines, a wonderful prelude to your drive to Barcelona.

Upon arriving, you will spend the evening at the Majestic Hotel (or a similar hotel) with dinner on your own.

    Day 5

Following breakfast the hotel and checking out, you will enjoy a walking tour of the Triangle of Discord, a triangular section of town named because the architecture within it is so dramatically diverse. Famed Barcelona architect Antoni Gaudí designed one of the buildings, as well as Park Güell, your next stop.

The park is an enchanting place where the architect’s passion for natural forms really took flight—to the point where the artificial almost seems more natural than the natural. Not far from the park, a private home stands out from the contemporary architecture, as it is reminiscent of an ancient Catalan country house.

Here, in this private setting usually reserved for Gastro Club members, you will linger over a magnificent lunch prepared by the owner, a master chef. Then, it’s on to the port of Barcelona, where you will embark the ship.

    Day 3 - May 23rd, 2019

After breakfast and check out, an English-speaking guide will accompany you for the drive to Parador de Cardona, a hilltop hotel in Cardona that was once a medieval castle. It’s an exquisite setting with unrivalled views over the city and the Cardener River. The atmosphere inside the hotel is just as memorable, as the architectural features and furnishings are medieval in style.

Once in Cardona you will meet up with the other four participants on the program and begin a walking tour to the castle. A number of wealthy salt barons lived here between the 11th and 15th centuries. Amazingly, the fortress was never conquered and survived intact through the Spanish Succession of 1711, the Spanish Civil War and other conflicts.

Because of its age and excellent condition, the castle reflects the evolution of military arts from the Middle Ages to modern times. It is now a state national monument, as is the adjoining Collegiate Church of Sant Vicenç.

Next you will transfer by shuttle with your guide to Cardona’s Old Town. Here you will walk through the narrow medieval streets in Cardona. The Old Town is typically quiet and immensely charming, and if time permits you will visit the massive Church of St. Miquel. The Catalan Gothic-style building dominates the main square.

Leaving Cardona behind, you will continue towards the salt mines for a visit. The Vall Salina of Cardona is a depression of the land in the form of an elongated ellipse, having a surface area of 100 ha. The outcrops of salt are located within the depression and were thus formerly known as the Salí (salt warehouse), and are today known as the Vall Salina (salt valley).

Enjoy a walk through the old mining facility, Mina Nieves. See the imposing tower of the old mine shaft ‘Maria Teresa’ and the museum, which explains the history of the industrial exploitation of the valley. The shaft’s mining machinery can also be seen just as it was when fully operational.

NOTE: The visit of the mine is not exclusive – there will be other people visiting as well. Personal audio guides are used inside the mine.

Finally, you will return to the Old Historic Quarter where you can enjoy some free time in the centre or take the shuttle to return to the Parador. Lunch is on your own.

Later in the day a group dinner will be arranged at the hotel.

Note: This tour not recommended for guests with walking difficulties due to the amount of walking, steps and cobbled surfaces. There are over 100 steps from the castle between the Old Town and the hotel. A shuttle service between the town and the castle will be offered on day 3. The local representative that accompanies you on the transfer does not stay at the hotel. Porters are not available at the hotel in Cardona therefore guests will be required to take their own luggage to their rooms.

Note: If you arrive at a church during mass, you may only visit the outside, where the guide will elaborate on the history and construction of the church.

    Day 4 – May 24th, 2019

After breakfast at the hotel, you will meet your driver in the lobby for the group transfer back to the pier in Barcelona, where you will embark the ship.

  • PRE-Timeless Barcelona and Medieval Cardona 2018 CODE: BCNL12

This program is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties due to the amount of walking and steps that are involved.

Explore Barcelona’s most iconic landmarks using a liberating Hop-On Hop-Off bus ticket and then discover the medieval charms of Cardona, a town founded in the 10th century.

    Day 1

Upon arriving at the Barcelona International Airport, you will meet our local ground staff outside the luggage pick-up area. You will then accompany a representative to the NH Calderon Hotel Barcelona or a similar hotel, where you will spend the evening.

You will receive a Barcelona Hop-On Hop-Off bus ticket, allowing you to enjoy the city sights at your own pace. You might decide to use it today or on day 2. The Hop on Hop off ticket is valid only on the same day you decide to use it.

Meals are on your own today

    Day 2

Following breakfast at the hotel, you may spend your free time discovering the bounties of Barcelona. The complimentary Hop-On Hop-Off bus ticket provides an excellent means to travel from one attraction to another and stay as long as you like.

You might stop at landmarks such as architect Antoni Gaudí’s famed Sagrada Familia church, the extraordinary Barcelona Aquarium and the Picasso Museum, whose permanent collection includes more than 4,000 works by the revered Spanish artist.

    Enjoy lunch on your own.

Later in the day, you will accompany a local representative for the drive to Parador de Cardona, a hilltop hotel in Cardona that was once a medieval castle. It’s an exquisite setting with unrivalled views over the city and the Cardener River. The atmosphere inside the hotel is just as memorable, as the architectural features and furnishings are medieval in style.

A group dinner is included at the hotel this evening.

Note: There are approximately 100 steps to reach the town center from the hotel. A shuttle service between the town and the castle will be offered on day 3. The local representative that accompanies you on the transfer does not stay at the hotel. Porters are not available at the hotel in Cardona therefore guests will be required to take their own luggage to their rooms.

    Day 3

After breakfast, you will meet your English-speaking guide in the lobby of your hotel and start your walking tour to the castle.

Next you will transfer by shuttle with your guide to Cardona's Old Town.

Finally you will return to the Old Historic Quarter where you can enjoy some free time in the centre or take the shuttle to return to the Parador. Lunch is on your own.

Later a group dinner is included at your hotel.

Note: If you visit Old Town on a Sunday, expect crowds from the local market. Respectful attire is required to enter all churches. If you arrive at a church during mass, you may only visit the outside, where the guide will elaborate on the history and construction of the church.

Note: This tour not recommended for guests with walking difficulties due to the amount of walking, steps and cobbled surfaces.

    Day 4

After breakfast at the hotel, you will meet your driver in the lobby for the transfer back to the pier in Barcelona, where you will embark the ship.

The hotel is a beautiful medieval castle with centuries of history, standing high atop a promontory and watching over the charming town of Cardona. On this 9th-century fortified site, you can also visit Minyona Tower and a lovely church, both dating from the 11th century. The Parador has taken great care with the décor to ensure that the castle retains all of its charm and so that the fosses, towers, walls and gothic elements can be seen in all their glory. Panoramic views of the town and the lands along the Cardoner River are visible from anywhere you look out, a gift to which you will awaken each morning.

The official hotel check-in time is 3pm. Please note that many hotels are adopting a non-smoking policy. If you have any questions regarding this please contact the hotel directly.

A Regent Seven Seas Cruises UK Representative will be available throughout your stay in Cardona. They will coordinate arrangements and ensure that your stay is a pleasurable one.

Guideline timings are given below – if there any changes, these will be advised to you locally in Cardona.

    Sunday 13th May 2018

Transfers have been arranged for air/sea guests who have purchased flights through Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Guests who have purchased their own flights and guests who have booked additional nights at the hotel (either independently or through Regent Seven Seas Cruises) will need to arrange their own transfer from the airport.

Once you have collected your luggage and cleared customs at Barcelona Airport, a local staff member will be waiting for you to start your Pre Cruise Program in Cardona. Relax in the comfort of your motor coach / car for a 1.5 hours trip to Cardona. Enjoy the landscape while you leave Barcelona and discover the unknown Catalonia.

Arrive to Parador de Cardona; the hotel is located on a headland in a 9th century fortified enclosure, alongside the 11th century Minyona tower and an 11th century church with characteristic features from the surrounding Catalan Romanesque. Its location provides exceptional panoramic views over the city and the fertile lands bathed by the River Cardoner.

The town’s origins go back to the 10th and 11th centuries, to the marketplace that was developed at the foot of the castle and its mountain, an area which would become densely inhabited despite the small area it covers.

After lunch (on your own), you will meet your English speaking guide who will accompany you to an amazing travel to the middle ages. Start your tour with a visit of the Castle and discover its history. The castle, the undefeated fortress, last bastion of Catalan freedoms, was the seat of the powerful lineage of the count-dukes of Cardona, “the uncrowned kings”, rich salt barons related to the most prominent European families.

The geographic location of the castle meets the need for defending access to the salt warehouse and of having a privileged view of the Cardener river valleys. Between the 11th and 15th centuries, it was the residence of the lords of Cardona: the “wealthy salt barons”, related to the most prominent European families and such was their influence that the duke of Cardona was known as “the uncrowned king”. The castle-fortress of Cardona played a major role in the War of Succession. Its resistance to the siege of 1711 and the delivering up of the fortress, 18 September 1714, in compliance with the order of the Catalan authorities, has turned it into a symbol and last bastion of freedoms of Catalonia

Meal Information: Lunch will be at your leisure and your evening meal is included at the Parador De Cordona.

    Monday 14th May 2018

After breakfast, you will meet your English speaking guide who will accompany you for an amazing tour of the Salt Mines - Salt production and the Vall Salina (salt valley) are the reason Cardona exists and the source of the glory of its past. Its municipal charter, one of the oldest in Europe, sets forth the right of the villagers to extract salt indefinitely.

The castle, the undefeated fortress, last bastion of Catalan freedoms, was the seat of the powerful lineage of the count-dukes of Cardona, “the uncrowned kings”, rich salt barons related to the most prominent European families.

Leave Parador de Cardona behind and continue towards the salt mines: The Vall Salina of Cardona is a depression of the land in the form of an elongated ellipse, having a surface area of 100 ha. The outcrops of salt are located within the depression and were thus formerly known as the Salí (salt warehouse), and are today known as the Vall Salina (salt valley). The old mine Mina Nieves has been restored as a cultural facility aiming to capture inter-relationship established between people and salt. Enjoy a walk through the old mining facilities, see the imposing tower of the old mine shaft Maria Teresa (46 metres) and the museum, which explains the history of the industrial exploitation of the valley. The shaft’s mining machinery can also be seen just as it was when fully operational.

After the tour, enjoy free time at the Old Historic Quarter or take the shuttle to return to the Parador.

Meal Information: Breakfast and evening meal is included; lunch is at your leisure.

  • PRE - TIMELESS BARCELONA & MEDIEVAL CARDONA 2020 CODE: BCNL24

Note: This tour not recommended for guests with walking difficulties due to the amount of walking, steps and cobbled surfaces.

You will then accompany a representative to the NH Gran Calderon Hotel Barcelona or a similar hotel, where you will spend the evening.

You will receive a Barcelona Hop-On Hop-Off bus ticket, allowing you to enjoy the city sights at your own pace. You might decide to use it today or on day 2. The Hop on Hop off ticket is valid only on the same day you decide to use it.

Meals are on your own today.

Finally you will return to the Old Historic Quarter where you can enjoy some free time in the centre or take the shuttle to return to the Parador. Lunch is on your own.

Later in the day a group dinner will be arranged at the hotel.

There are over 100 steps from the castle between the Old Town and the hotel.

    Day 4

After breakfast at the hotel, you will meet your driver in the lobby for the transfer back to the pier in Barcelona, where you will embark the ship.

A Regent Seven Seas Cruises UK Representative will be available throughout your stay in Cardona. They will coordinate arrangements and ensure that your stay is a pleasurable one.

Guideline timings are given below – if there any changes, these will be advised to you locally in Cardona.

    Saturday 21st July 2018

    Sunday 22nd July 2018

Enjoy a walk through the old mining facilities, see the imposing tower of the old mine shaft Maria Teresa (46 metres) and the museum, which explains the history of the industrial exploitation of the valley. The shaft’s mining machinery can also be seen just as it was when fully operational.

    Enjoy lunch on your own.

Later in the day, you will accompany a local English Speaking Guide for the drive to Parador de Cardona, a hilltop hotel in Cardona that was once a medieval castle.

Porters are not available at the hotel in Cardona therefore guests will be required to take their own luggage to their rooms.

    Day 3

After breakfast, you will meet your English-speaking guide in the lobby of your hotel and start your walking tour to the castle.

There are over 100 steps from the castle between the Old Town and the hotel.

    Day 4

After breakfast at the hotel, you will meet your driver in the lobby for the transfer back to the pier in Barcelona, where you will embark the ship.

Relax in the comfort of your motor coach / car for a 1.5 hours trip to Cardona. Enjoy the landscape while you leave Barcelona and discover the unknown Catalonia.

In the afternoon, you will meet your English speaking guide who will accompany you to an amazing travel to the middle ages. Its resistance to the siege of 1711 and the delivering up of the fortress, 18 September 1714, in compliance with the order of the Catalan authorities, has turned it into a symbol and last bastion of freedoms of Catalonia. Dress code: Respectful attire needed if guests wish to enter the local church. There are mass services on Sundays, visits may not be accepted during mass services. If so, guide will give explanations from outside.

Meal Information: Lunch will be at your leisure and your evening meal is included at the Parador De Cardona.

Monday 11th November – Salt Mines Tour

After breakfast, you will meet your English-speaking guide who will accompany you for an amazing tour of the Salt Mines - Salt production and the Vall Salina (salt valley) are the reason Cardona exists and the source of the glory of its past.

Leaving the Parador de Cardona behind and continue towards the salt mines: The Vall Salina of Cardona is a depression of the land in the form of an elongated ellipse, having a surface area of 100 ha.
