Legend states that Ulysses founded Lisbon, calling it Olisipo. Others claim that the name is Phoenician, but all agree it’s one of Europe’s most fascinating destinations. On All Saints’ Day in 1755 a devastating earthquake destroyed much of the city. The Baixa (Lower City) was rebuilt on neo-classical lines that still form the heart of the city. The elegant ‘City of Explorers’overlooks the River Tagus, and offers a number of distinctive neighborhoods to discover. Tour the Alfama, where the winding streets still retain much of their Moorish atmosphere. Stroll to Bairro Alto and hear the melodious sounds of Portugal’s Fado music. Nearby excursions transport you to the lavish 18th-century palace of Queluz and Sintra’s Royal Palace.

  • POST - LUXURIOUS LANDSCAPES & LISBON CODE: LISL04

Immerse yourself in the glorious architecture and culture of Lisbon and the surrounding area by visiting a castle and UNESCO-recognized city, dining on traditional cuisine and sampling wines characteristic of the region.

    DAY 1

After disembarking the ship you will begin touring many of the cultural and architectural highlights of Lisbon, the second-oldest capital in Europe. Your first stop will be Belem, a historical suburb where you will enjoy a tasting of traditional Portuguese pastries. These small egg tarts are often stuffed or sprinkled with cinnamon and have become synonymous with Lisbon.

Continuing on to the Alfama neighborhood, you will have the opportunity to stroll the narrow, winding streets lined with compact houses. Alfama’s most famed attraction is the Castle of St. George, where you will have a close-up view of this hilltop citadel. The restored stone ramparts are particularly fascinating.

Note: there is an uphill walk to reach the castle.

Then at the wonderfully atmospheric Port Wine Institute, you will enjoy a sampling of various ports, which are sweet wines usually fortified with brandy. Each port will impart its own characteristics and flavors, which you can rate according to your own personal preferences.

Afterwards, you will check in at Lapa Palace Hotel, an urban oasis tucked away on a hilltop in one of Lisbon’s most exclusive neighborhoods. You will have some time to relax before the evening’s entertainment—a traditional Portuguese dinner at a Fado restaurant. Fado is Portuguese folk music that is melancholy by nature and usually played on guitars and mandolins. The lyrics tend to be poetic and involve themes such as love and sadness.

Following this authentic cultural experience, you will return to the hotel for the evening.

    DAY 2

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will drive inland to Sintra, a beautiful city that pioneered European Romantic architecture in the 19th century. In fact, Sintra is so important architecturally that UNESCO has recognized it as a World Heritage Cultural Landscape. The highlight here is the National Palace, or Royal Palace as it is sometimes called. While its colossal 14th-century chimneys are often the first feature seen, there are many other noteworthy details such as the centuries-old Portuguese tiles with Moorish designs that decorate the interior.

Note: due to traffic regulations, the busses cannot drop off in the center of Sintra therefore guests will have a walk of approximately 15 minutes to reach the center.

Continuing on, you will soon arrive at the neoclassical Seteais Palace, which is now a luxury hotel. After a delightful coffee break here, you will drive toward Guincho Beach, pausing for photos at Cabo da Roca, an elevated lookout that offers a spectacular view of the surrounding national park and Atlantic Ocean.

Lunch at a nearby restaurant follows, after which you will head toward the coastal city of Cascais. On the way, you will pass Boca Do Inferno, or Hell’s Mouth, where the ceaseless pounding of the sea has carved a jagged cave out of the rocks.

During free time in Cascais, you might enjoy shopping in the designer boutiques, meandering the winding lanes or simply gazing out to sea while sitting in the cool shade of a palm. On the return drive to Lisbon, you will pass beach-blessed Estoril, another popular resort city.

Back at the hotel, you will have the remainder of the evening to enjoy as you please, with dinner on you own.

    DAY 3

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and then you will spend the remainder of the day enjoying the amenities of this luxurious resort, which was once the private residence of the Count of Valencas. Lapa Palace Hotel is conveniently located within easy reach of Lisbon’s attractions, if you wish to explore the city or shop.

You may wish to contact OCI Reservations for private car and guide rates and information or you may choose to speak to the Concierge at the resort for a list of activities and sightseeing opportunities.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, 24 hours a day. You may also enjoy the indoor and outdoor swimming pool, sauna, gym and steam bath free of charge

  • PRE - LISBON LANDMARKS AND BEYOND 2020 CODE: LISL12

Become immersed in the joys of Lisbon by visiting the capital city’s most well-known attractions and neighborhoods, watching a traditional Fado performance and exploring palaces in the nearby foothills.

    DAY 1

After flying into the Lisbon airport, you will be met outside of customs and transferred to the Olissippo Lapa Palace Hotel, an urban oasis tucked away on a hilltop in one of Lisbon’s most exclusive neighborhoods. Check in is 3pm and while every effort will be made to have rooms available earlier, this cannot be guaranteed.

You will spend the remainder of the day settling in and enjoying the amenities of this luxurious resort, which was once the private residence of the Count of Valencas. Lapa Palace Hotel is conveniently located within easy reach of Lisbon’s attractions, if you wish to explore the city or shop on your own before retiring for the evening.

Your river and garden view room in the hotel’s garden wing on the 4th, 5th or 6th floor will have a balcony that presents views of Lisbon’s downtown, the Tagus River and the hotel pool and garden.

    DAY 2

After departing from the hotel, you will enjoy a scenic Tuk Tuk drive towards the Belem Quarter, where you can admire the Monument of Discoveries, the Tower of Belém and Jeronimos Monastery. Continuing on to downtown Lisbon, you will pass lovely Liberdade Avenue, the elegant shopping area of Chiado and the heart of the commercial area, Praça do Comércio and Alfama. Stop to taste the traditional pastry - pastéis de nata.

Alfama takes its name from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning fountains or baths. It contains many important historical attractions and traditional Fado restaurants along its narrow and winding streets. The medieval Castle of São Jorge overlooks the Alfama and offers one of the best views of the city.

One of the highlights of this comprehensive city tour is visiting the Lisbon Cathedral, also known as the Sé. Although it looks like a medieval fortress, the interior is glorious and includes the font where St. Anthony of Padua was supposedly baptized in the 12th Century.

By midday, you will return to the hotel to spend the afternoon at your leisure or you may remain in the city center and return on your own.

The entertainment for the evening will be in the Bacalhau de Molho, a restaurant built on the foundation of a palace that was partially destroyed in an 18th-Century earthquake. Here, you will enjoy a traditional Portuguese dinner and watch a Fado show. Fado is Portuguese folk music that is melancholy by nature and usually played on guitars and mandolins. The lyrics tend to be poetic and involve themes such as love and sadness.

Following this authentic cultural experience, you will return to the hotel.

    DAY 3

After departing from the hotel, you will pass through some of Portugal’s most inspiring countryside on the way to Mafra. Here, at the revered Palace of Mafra, which was constructed of local limestone and marble in the 18th Century, you will behold priceless art and period furnishings that were characteristic of the royal lifestyle. At one time, the palace also served as a Franciscan monastery.

After visiting the extraordinary palace, you will continue even deeper into the countryside to the winery Quinta de Sant’ana. In the 17th century, King Carlos I gave this beautiful estate to one of his mistresses. While touring the family-run vineyard, you will watch the production process and learn about the traditional techniques used here. A wine tasting follows, during which you may sample a sublime Riesling, an elegant Tinto or a complex red blend with intense fruit flavors.

Following lunch at the winery, you will return to the hotel along a spectacularly scenic coastal route. The remainder of the day and dinner will be on your own to enjoy as you please.

    DAY 4

After departing from the hotel, you will drive to Sintra, a beautiful town nestled in the forested foothills of the Sintra mountains. Your experience here begins with free time to wander about the atmospheric streets, enjoy the sweeping views and thoroughly relax.

Not far away, you will find Pena Palace, a landmark that was built in the 19th century to be a royal summer home. Inside and out, it looks like an eccentric mix of different castle styles and features. Now hailed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Portugal’s Seven Wonders, the flamboyant palace exemplifies 19th-century Romantic architecture, inside and out.

Following your tour of Pena Palace, you will return to Lisbon and embark the cruise ship.

  • POST - LUXURIOUS LANDSCAPES & LISBON - 2020 CODE: LISL14

Immerse yourself in the glorious architecture and culture of Lisbon and the surrounding area by visiting a castle and UNESCO-recognized city, dining on traditional cuisine and sampling wines characteristic of the region.

    DAY 1

Following disembarkation in Lisbon you will begin touring many of the cultural and architectural highlights of the city, the second-oldest capital in Europe. Your first stop will be Belem, a historical suburb where you will enjoy a tasting of traditional Portuguese pastries. These small egg tarts are often stuffed or sprinkled with cinnamon and have become synonymous with Lisbon. Here you will also admire the Monument of Discoveries, the Tower of Belem and Jeronimos Monastery.

Continuing on to the Alfama neighborhood, the oldest in Lisbon, you will have the opportunity to stroll the narrow, winding streets lined with compact houses. Alfama’s most famed attraction is the Castle of St. George, where you will have a close-up view of this hilltop citadel. The restored stone ramparts are particularly fascinating.

Note: there is an uphill walk to reach the castle.

Then at the wonderfully atmospheric Casa Leão, you will enjoy a sampling of various ports, which are sweet wines usually fortified with brandy. Each port will impart its own characteristics and flavors, which you can rate according to your own personal preferences.

Afterwards, you will return to the hotel to check in and relax before the evening’s entertainment—a traditional Portuguese dinner at a Fado restaurant. Fado is Portuguese folk music that is melancholy by nature and usually played on guitars and mandolins. The lyrics tend to be poetic and involve themes such as love and sadness.

Following this authentic cultural experience, you will return to the hotel for the evening.

Lunch is on your own today.

While it’s colossal 14th Century chimneys are often the first feature seen, there are many other noteworthy details such as the centuries-old Portuguese tiles with Moorish designs that decorate the interior.

    DAY 3

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and have the day at leisure to explore the sights on your own.

Lunch and dinner are on your own.

    Pousada de Lisboa

Formerly the home of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Pousada of Lisbon is ideally located for exploring this fantastic city. It is situated in one of the most famous squares in Lisbon, the Praca do Comercio, which was particularly important during Portugal’s famous era of ‘discoveries’ as it was the home of many government departments which stood opposite the disembarkation point for Portuguese ships, filled with riches from the East and the Americas. This square opens up to the Tejo River on one side and to the most historic parts of the city on the other three sides. From here the centuries old winding streets lead up to the Castle of St Jorge and beautiful Rossio Square. The Pousada sits in a magnificent stately building and overlooks the Tejo River. It has been beautifully restored and is now transformed into a luxurious hotel with many of the building’s traditional features incorporated into the decor. It has 90 rooms, many overlooking the Tejo River, and offers excellent facilities, including a spa, swimming pool and fitness centre. The two bars and restaurant, with views over the square, provide the ideal location to relax and unwind in one of Europe´s oldest capital cities. Monday 21st May 2018 – Lisbon Highlights Tour

This morning after breakfast we have arranged a Lisbon Highlights Tour at 09:30, lasting approximately 4 hours. With its strong maritime history, Lisbon – the most westerly capital in Europe, has long been known as the “City of Discoveries”. Belém was the “old harbour” from which the caravels of the Great Voyages of the Discoveries set sail. In the 15th and 16th centuries, after Vasco da Gama discovered the sea passage to India and Cabral’s discovery of Brazil, Lisbon became a great metropolis and centre of trade between east and west. Remarkable monuments and symbols to this golden age of Portuguese history include Belém Tower, a watchtower built in 1515 to defend the entrance of the harbour. The Memorial to Prince Henry the Navigator and Portuguese Discoveries was built in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry, a great genius and founder of the first school of navigation. Pass by the magnificent church of the Royal Monastery of St Jerome. Built in 1502 to honour the discoveries it is considered to be the most elaborate expression of Manueline style, do not miss the opportunity to taste also the most famous pastries form Lisbon, at the original spot. Afterwards, continue the tour following the River Tagus past Black Horse Square to Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest quarter for a short walk, just before to return to the hotel.

Upon return to the hotel, the rest of the day is at leisure.

Tuesday 22nd May – Departure Day & Transfer to m/s Seven Seas Explorer

Departure from the hotel is today. Please ensure that your baggage is packed and ready to be collected by hotel porters. Suitcases should be left outside your room; please advise hotel reception when these are ready.

Your Regent UK Representative will confirm the timings for baggage collection and departure from the hotel. After breakfast, please ensure that you check-out of the hotel and settle any incidental expenses that you may have incurred.

The timing of departure from the hotel to the cruise terminal to join m/s Seven Seas Explorer will be confirmed locally. The approximate travel time is 15 minutes.

    Walking Information:

Strenuous - Tour not recommended for guests with walking difficulties due to the amount of walking involved and uneven surfaces, especially at the Alfama neighbourhood which is very uphill and on cobblestone surfaces. Much of the surface in the city is paved and uneven ground.

There are many steps (over 100!) from castle to the old town and back

    Enjoy your wonderful cruise!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact RSSC at +44 23 8068 2280. It is a pleasure to have you as our guest, and we look forward to serving you again in the future.

  • PRE - LUXURIOUS LANDSCAPES AND LISBON 2020 CODE: LISL11

Immerse yourself in the glorious architecture and culture of Lisbon and the surrounding area by visiting a castle and UNESCO-recognized city, dining on traditional cuisine and sampling wines characteristic of the region.

    DAY 1

After flying into the Lisbon airport, you will be met outside of Customs and transferred to your hotel. Check in is at 3pm, and while every effort will be made to have rooms available earlier, this cannot be guaranteed. The afternoon will be at your leisure with meals on your own.

    DAY 2

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will begin touring many of the cultural and architectural highlights of Lisbon, the second-oldest capital in Europe.

Afterwards, you will return to the hotel to relax before the evening’s entertainment—a traditional Portuguese dinner at a Fado restaurant. Fado is Portuguese folk music that is melancholy by nature and usually played on guitars and mandolins. The lyrics tend to be poetic and involve themes such as love and sadness.

Following this authentic cultural experience, you will return to the hotel for the evening.

    DAY 3

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will drive inland to Sintra, a beautiful city that pioneered European Romantic architecture in the 19th Century. In fact, Sintra is so important architecturally that UNESCO has recognized it as a World Heritage Cultural Landscape. The highlight here is the National Palace, or Royal Palace as it is sometimes called. While it’s colossal 14th Century chimneys are often the first feature seen, there are many other noteworthy details such as the centuries-old Portuguese tiles with Moorish designs that decorate the interior.

    DAY 4

Following breakfast and check out from the hotel, you will be transferred to the port for embarkation on the cruise ship.

  • PRE - LISBON LANDMARKS AND BEYOND CODE: LISL10

Your river-view room in the hotel’s garden wing on the 4th, 5th or 6th floor will have a balcony that presents views of Lisbon’s downtown, the Tagus River and the hotel pool and garden.

    DAY 2

After departing from the hotel, you will enjoy a scenic drive towards the Belem Quarter, where you can admire the Monument of Discoveries, the Tower of Belém and Jeronimos Monastery. Continuing on to downtown Lisbon, you will pass lovely Liberdade Avenue, the elegant shopping area of Chiado and the heart of the commercial area, Praça do Comércio and Alfama.
