Legend states that Ulysses founded Lisbon, calling it Olisipo. Others claim that the name is Phoenician, but all agree it’s one of Europe’s most fascinating destinations. On All Saints’ Day in 1755 a devastating earthquake destroyed much of the city. The Baixa (Lower City) was rebuilt on neo-classical lines that still form the heart of the city. The elegant ‘City of Explorers’overlooks the River Tagus, and offers a number of distinctive neighborhoods to discover. Tour the Alfama, where the winding streets still retain much of their Moorish atmosphere. Stroll to Bairro Alto and hear the melodious sounds of Portugal’s Fado music. Nearby excursions transport you to the lavish 18th-century palace of Queluz and Sintra’s Royal Palace.

Sofitel Lisbon Liberdade adds sophistication and classic luxury to one of Lisbon’s most stylish avenues, Avenida da Liberdade. If shopping is your thing, then you won’t be disappointed here, as the hotel is surrounded by high-fashion boutiques.
The hotel’s décor blends its French origins with a local touch, giving it a discreet elegance and refinement. Use of dark exotic woods, gold taupe and teal accents along with some Asian relics and works of art harking back to the period of the Portuguese discoveries lend the place a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
These touches make the Liberdade feel more like an intimate boutique hotel, rather than a big brand.

Pousada de Lisboa
Formerly the home of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Pousada of Lisbon is ideally located for exploring this fantastic city. It is situated in one of the most famous squares in Lisbon, the Praca do Comercio, which was particularly important during Portugal’s famous era of ‘discoveries’ as it was the home of many government departments which stood opposite the disembarkation point for Portuguese ships, filled with riches from the East and the Americas. This square opens to the Tejo River on one side and to the most historic parts of the city on the other three sides. From here the centuries old winding streets lead up to the Castle of St Jorge and beautiful Rossio Square. The Pousada sits in a magnificent stately building and overlooks the Tejo River. It has been beautifully restored and is now transformed into a luxurious hotel with many of the building’s traditional features incorporated into the decor. It has 90 rooms, many overlooking the Tejo River, and offers excellent facilities, including a spa, swimming pool and fitness centre. The two bars and restaurant, with views over the square, provide the ideal location to relax and unwind in one of Europe´s oldest capital cities. The inner courtyard with a removable dome is another feature of this beautiful hotel.

Sunday 24th November – Lisbon Highlights Tour
This morning after breakfast we have arranged a Lisbon Highlights Tour at 09:30, lasting approximately 4 hours. With its strong maritime history, Lisbon – the most westerly capital in Europe, has long been known as the “City of Discoveries”. Belém was the “old harbour” from which the caravels of the Great Voyages of the Discoveries set sail. In the 15th and 16th centuries, after Vasco da Gama discovered the sea passage to India and Cabral’s discovery of Brazil, Lisbon became a great metropolis and centre of trade between east and west. Remarkable monuments and symbols to this golden age of Portuguese history include Belém Tower, a watchtower built in 1515 to defend the entrance of the harbour. The Memorial to Prince Henry the Navigator and Portuguese Discoveries was built in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry, a great genius and founder of the first school of navigation. Pass by the magnificent church of the Royal Monastery of St Jerome. Built in 1502 to honour the discoveries it is the most elaborate expression of Manueline style, do not miss the opportunity to taste also the most famous pastries form Lisbon, at the original spot. Afterwards, continue the tour following the River Tagus past Black Horse Square to Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest quarter for a short walk, just before to return to the hotel.
Upon return to the hotel, the rest of the day is at leisure.
Monday 25th November – Departure day and transfer to the airport
Transfers have been arranged for air/sea guests who have purchased flights through Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Guests who have purchased their own flights and guests who have booked additional nights at the hotel (either independently or through Regent Seven Seas Cruises) will need to arrange their own transfer to the airport.
Your Regent UK Representative will confirm the timings for baggage collection and departure from the hotel. After breakfast, please ensure that you check-out of the hotel and settle any incidental expenses that you may have incurred.
Strenuous - Tour not recommended for guests with walking difficulties due to the amount of walking involved and uneven surfaces, especially at the Alfama neighbourhood which is very uphill and on cobblestone surfaces. Much of the surface in the city is paved and uneven ground.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact RSSC at +44 23 8068 2280. It is a pleasure to have you as our guest, and we look forward to serving you again in the future.
