For instance, you may walk the hallowed grounds of the Basilica di San Gavino, one of Sardinia’s most important Romanesque churches. The church, which stands on an ancient pagan burial ground, is dedicated to one of the great Sardinian saints, Gavino, commander of the Roman garrison at Torres during the reign of the emperor Diocletian. At the Archaeology Park & Museum, view the excavated remains of Turris Libisonis, the ancient Roman city on which the modern day Porto Torres stands.
