Barcelona, Spain-port

One of Europe’s most visually stunning cities, Barcelona balances the medieval intimacy of its Gothic Quarter with the grace and distinction of the wide boulevards in the Moderniste Eixample. It was the home of architect Antoni Gaudí, whose Sagrada Familia Cathedral, Park Güell and Casa Milà are the most profound statements of Modernisme. View the splendid works at the Picasso Museum and the Miro Foundation, or discover Barcelona’s passionate ambiance at a flamenco show.

Savor the distinctive cuisine and signature beverages of Catalonia by taking a hands-on cooking class, sampling the area’s wines and cavas, and visiting a farm that has been operating since the 16th-century.

Day 1:

After flying into the Barcelona airport, you will transfer to your hotel. During check-in, you will be given tickets for the “Hop On Hop Off” tour bus. The tickets are valid only for one day to use on whichever day you wish.

As guests will be arriving at different times, the remainder of this day is at your leisure, and dinner is on your own.

NOTE: the closest Hop on Hop Off station to your hotel is approximately a 15 minute walk.

Day 2:

After meeting the group in the hotel reception area, you will enjoy a short but panoramic drive to another part of Barcelona. Here, you will walk along the famed, shop-lined Las Ramblas Boulevard and through the vibrant La Boqueria food market. As you meander about the stalls and shops, you will see a seemingly endless array of fresh fish, meats, cheeses, and fruits and vegetables.

Continuing on with your guide, you will then meet a local expert on gastronomy at the Santa Caterina Market, the largest such market in Barcelona where he/she will purchase all the necessary ingredients to prepare a traditional Spanish meal. Expect the ingredients to be fresh, flavorful and representative of Spanish cuisine.

Then, it’s off to a nearby venue, where you will participate in a hands-on cooking workshop and prepare an authentic Spanish meal that includes paella. Once the dishes are ready, you will enjoy them for lunch before returning to the hotel. The remainder of the day is at your leisure to do whatever you please.

Day 3:

Today, you will have the opportunity to assist (optional) in the preparation of a human tower called a “castell,” which is usually built by local citizens for annual festivities. The towers are often six to ten people high with the participants standing on each other’s shoulders.

You may form part of the bottom level, as being in the higher levels takes more practice and skills. In fact, the tower-building methods are usually so involved that they are handed down from generation to generation. Castells are so emblematic of the Catalan culture that UNESCO has recognized them on its Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

Please note: if Day 3 falls on a Sunday, you will assist in building the human tower in the morning (the venue may be crowded), and lunch will be included before returning to Barcelona. If Day 3 falls on a weekday, you will assist at a training session of a human tower display in a local association in the evening, and dinner will be included.

Day 4:

The day’s activities begin by driving to Montserrat, where you will visit a 12th-century monastery built into the mountain. Besides learning all sorts of interesting facts about the monastery, you will see the statue of La Moreneta, the Black Madonna, which has supposedly performed numerous miracles. Consequently, pilgrims have been coming for centuries to see the wooden Black Madonna.

While at the monastery, you may also meander about the grounds and visit the Royal Basilica and Museum of Montserrat, whose collection holds works by Picasso, Dalí and Monet.

Later, you will enjoy a 3 course traditional Catalan lunch of locally grown products at a 10th-century farm - Oller del Mas, which formerly belonged to the Oller family, many knights, nobles and also craftsmen. Afterwards, you will have the chance to tour the farm, the castle, the vineyard and wine cellar where you will discover the many stages of wine production, from the first pressing of the grapes to fermentation in the cellars. Afterwards, you will sample some of the products including local cheese and then drive to Barcelona to embark on the ship.

Land Program Step by Step: The order of sites visited may vary to avoid congestion. The times are approximate, given here only for general reference and are subject to change. Markets in Spain are closed on Sundays, so if Day 2 falls on a Sunday then the days will be reversed to accommodate all aspects of the tour.

Extra Nights: If you book extra nights through the cruise line, you will be met per the flight details provided and privately transferred to your hotel. Check in is 3:00pm. Be sure that the cruise line has your up-to-date flight details so transfers can be arranged accordingly. Activities and meals other than breakfast are on your own during extra nights.

After arriving at the Barcelona Airport (BCN), you will be met in the arrivals area outside Customs and transferred to the hotel. Check in is 3:00pm. Although every effort will be made to have rooms available sooner, this cannot be guaranteed. The afternoon and the evening are at your leisure. Overnight at the hotel.
